I would vote for Bauer as Pitcher of the Year. He's been unbelievable. I still think Cole will go first and I would pick him first. It very well could be that Bauer will end up with a better career. I base it on this... If both pitchers are at their very best, Gerritt Cole as as good as anyone who has ever lived. I have seen that and so have many others. I've also seen him not so good and have seen hitters hit him that shouldn't have a prayer. To me it's all about who has the highest...

PG - totally respect your opinion and it is what makes this site the greatest. I can see where Cole has the most tools and "potentially" the biggest upside. I was never quite sure Matt Harvey dominated in college like the hype surrounding him said he ought to but he is unhittable right now in the pros. The very same thing may be true of Cole after he becomes a multimillionaire in a few weeks. I get where guys get paid for tools and then we see out of that pool who the best players are.

But we all know that the executives in the professional ranks are projecting who is going to help them in the next two, five, ten years? FWIW, I was questioning this statement, his performance not translating into a possibly first round pick. It's apparent that Bauer is RIGHT now the better college pitcher. I don't think that anyone is arguing that point. PG statement that pro ball is NOT about what is happening now against college hitters is right on. So are the statements about added pressure. With one guy going 1st and one going third, everyone in this thread can basically say they were right as there is not much difference between the first and third overall pick. My reason for bringing up Greg Maddux was not to say that Bauer reminds me of Maddux. My point was as good as Maddux's tools were, I doubt they were scored as highly as Gerrit Cole. If you think one guy is Greg Maddux however, I don't really care what the tools equation is, I want Greg Maddux. The MLB network did a...

So players from the 60's to the 90's weren't as concerned about their batting averages as players from previous eras? If Nolan Ryan had pitched in previous decades with his same stuff during his career his strikeout total would have been one record that no one would ever sniff at. Even Jack Bauer would have been in awe. No disrespect DOD but I think someone fed you a line. BTW, If his strikeout total is inflated what happened to EVERY OTHER pitcher. Clemens and Johnson are still a 1000 behind.

Re: Long toss vs. actual pitching velocity

Not really sure I want to get caught in a TPM v. GBM peeing contest, but here goes. :-) According to Prof. Adair in The Physics of Baseball a baseball released at 90 mph, at an optimum angle of 35-40 degrees, will travel a little over 300 feet. Logically, most people who throw mid 90's should be able to throw well over 300 feet, though an adjustment to release paint will be necessary. Just because a pitcher with a 95 mph arm doesn't throw 300 feet doesn't mean he can't. Many college and MLB...

My son's pitching instructor wasn't able to long toss 300'. I believe he's capable of doing so during the season but at that point in time he wasn't able to. He's got a low 3/4 arm slot which tends to reduce long toss distance. I understand that he tops out at about 93 mph off the mound and that he had an ERA around 2.5 this season in AAA. There are some pitchers who just don't long toss far relative to their pitching velocity for whatever reason. TPM, I've seen plenty of pitchers who threw...

Coach May will pop in here if he sees this with his numbers (and next time I am going to copy it and save it) but he had kids enter HS at 74 and exit at 94, some come in at 80 and leave at 83. (I am guessing but these should be close) The point is that it is not where you enter but where you exit HS that matters. My son’s pitching coach had one kid at 85 when he was 14, and he also coached Bauer who was a heck of a lot less at that age. Both are now in the minors. If my son was 85 at 14 then...

Hey EdgarFan- Good question. Alan would be the first person to tell you that long toss is not the absolute most beneficial aspect of a pitcher's success and increased velocity. Mechanics are, by far, the #1 factor in this. Translating that into a long toss session, remaining mechanically sound throughout throwing is crucial in developing greater arm strength in a healthy manner. Alan considers himself to be a spiritual person, and he is very interested in making sure that the mind and the...

Thanks to the OP for posting the article link and thank goodness it's not behind a paywall. As the father of a young (8th grade) P/3B/OF, I am very interested in the conversation on training arms. And I admit I am in the bag for Bundy and Bauer and find them and their training fascinating. But while I see my son throwing longer, more consistently as he gets older, I am also intrigued by the position taken by the anti-tossers, like Dick Mills. He has some thoughts that are worth integrating.

I think you need to be a little more balanced than Arkansas this year or say UCLA with Bauer and Cole. South Carolina may also have a balance problem as it seems like you can pitch around their lineup (fewer tough spots in their lineup) this year so it might be tough for them to 3-peat.

Must be why when tricep nerve blocks were put in place, velocity went down 20% in research studies. Yeah, the arm contributes nothing to velocity. How do the hands add power? The contribution of the hands, wrists, and forearms is mainly direction. Most power comes from the legs and rear hip. As I said earlier in this post, the hands, wrists, and forearms provide bat direction. If you actively use them, they can help in squaring up the ball. Tip n' Rip is not a universal panacea. I recognize that. There are players (and I know a few) who have big lower body issues and considerable "connection" issues (using the term that you're familiar...

Checked my alma mater. I went through about 2/3 of the lineup and found 0 engineering majors. I'd be shocked if there was even one. Some coaches will not recruit players they think will insist on being an engineering major. UCLA recruited Bauer despite his being an engineering major but he's had to back off and go with math or physics instead for now because of the demands of an engineering education vs baseball. Why does it have to be either/or? Look at Trevor Bauer. He wasn't as athletic as some and developed great flexibility, etc. He also developed his mechanics (non-cookie cutter). One can only throw so much and that leaves plenty of time for working on athleticism. I would caution about overdoing it with young players especially during the growth spurt. Some players are at risk of developing stress fractures in the back during this period and there's no way of knowing in advance which ones. It...

The fear factor should never be a consideration because a player can get hurt anywhere at anytime. IMO, a player that suffers a major injury while young may be better off rehabbing while at college than in milb. In milb being on the DL is losing valuable time (even for #1 picks) while others in good health move ahead of you. Trust me on that one. This is why I am such a stickler for good practice in youth sports, especially for pitchers. As mentioned this is all a personal decision, keep in...
