Senior All-Academic Tryout / Arizona Fall Classic
My son recently committed to a high academic D3 school. He's very excited about both the academics and the baseball program, however this is one of those schools that does not have "slots" for athletes. He has to get past admissions, and the school is extremely selective. I don't believe the coaches would have recruited him if he didn't have a chance, but it's far from a sure thing. His pre-read was not a slam dunk, but also not a "no". He'll be applying early decision, and that leads to my...

Gold standard for D3 field/facilities
Curious what the thoughts are here. Clearly one of the trade off for D3 is that the fields and facilities can be closer to high school than what we think of as next level. I've seen a few top D3 programs where I was surprised at just how bare bones the field/facilities were. Obviously the school isn't bringing in any revenue for the program, but some of the schools I'm talking about have massive tuitions so a bit surprising that the field/facilities aren't more impressive. Of those I've seen...

Sharing the love- Happy Valentine's Day!
I think this is my first topic post. Having read, studied & learned so much from all of you...Thank you so much! As a baseball loving & not super savvy baseball parent, here are a few thoughts now that DS is committed to a HA D3: 1. Most difficult and recent decision for our son was deciding between JUCO and the HA D3. Left it all up to him...but used guidance from you all. 2. Most important time son spent was ACT prep with a private online tutor...also best money we spent. 3.

Re: Book recommendation
Another book many on this site will enjoy is "Senior Year: A Father, A Son, and High School Baseball" by Dan Shaughnessy. Dan is a sports columnist for the Boston Globe. Here's a link to the book: http://www.amazon.com/Senior-Year-Father-School-Basebal...id=1183403730&sr=1-1 I've only just started the book but looks to be a good one.

D3 Bids to the CWS
There has been a lot of questions about different D3 teams lately and one school over another. Many stating that there player wanted to be on a competitive team. Since 2014 the number of bids have been somehwere around 56 teams. If you are interested in playing into the regionals and CWS, you need to understand how teams get those bids. There are three pools: A- Conferences that have 7 or more teams get an automatic bid. Some of these conferences have tourneys to decide others decide using...

This is a really neat idea. I am very happy for the young men who get this opportunity. This is part of what makes D3 sports special. THis has nothing to do with Flash and profits. Both the D3 athletes will benefit and Puerto Rican Athletes will learn more about a division of Baseball they probably know little about. http://www.d3baseball.com/notables/2016/01/clemente-cup Here are the schools that I found that are competing. From Do it Right Baseball
Do It Right Basebal l May 14, 2015 · The coach called one of his 9-year-old baseball players aside and asked, "Do you understand what co-operation is? What a team is?" "Yes, coach", replied the boy . "Do you understand that what matters is we win or lose as a team?" The boy nodded in yes. The coach continued, "I'm sure you know, when an out is called, you shouldn't argue, curse, attack the umpire, or call him a pecker-head, jerk-face or a-hole. Do you understand all that?" Again, the boy...

When was your position player offered by any top academic? Any top academic offers to position players while they were Juniors?
I'm curious when, and at what events your position players were offered by top academic D1's or D3's? Was it after a Nov junior year HF or Showball event, or at an Ivy, D3, Patriot league camp in Feb junior year, or after Sacramento HF event? (Noticing a few early pitcher commits to Harvard and Yale on PG) If your position player was offered during junior year, can tell us when and at what type of an event your son was noticed? What was the tool motivating the coach to offer? Seems like...

D3 Coach talking to Admissions
Hi all, I'm a 2018 catcher looking to play D3 baseball in the northeast. My grades are good, I have a 32 composite on the ACT and a 3.5 GPA at the 11th best high school in the nation according to US News and World Report. Anyways, I've been in communication with a D3 coach for awhile now. He asked me to send me my grades and test scores to him in our most recent emails. The admissions counselor that he emailed said that I would be a great fit, and that she would love to meet when I am up on...

Best showcases for Canadian catcher
Hi folks -- We're based in Toronto (so not in the HS baseball mainstream), and my son is a catcher in his junior year who is aspiring to play U.S. college baseball. We'd like to attend one or two showcases this summer, and are just wondering if any of you could recommend what our best choice(s) might be. My son would like to study sports management, and we're targeting a variety of D1, D2, D3 and NAIA schools. What showcase would give us the best bang for the buck? Thanks very much for your ...

2019 C/Utility out of England
I have little to no context of skill or coaching as a player in the United Kingdom, as the baseball infrastructure here is severely lacking. I'm 6'0, 175lb, with a hand-timed record pop time of 2.05. I try and self-coach as much as possible when practices are few and far between, emulating players on Instagram and YouTube. I've played international baseball with Team GB, which is probably at the same level as US high school, and I have a career average in those tournaments of .445. I will be...

Thanks Coach May. I forwarded on our remarks to the HS basebal coach when I read this the other day. When I stopped by last night at the hitting barn (thats what they call the hitting cages at the HS), Your words were in poster size, framed, on the wall. I saw 3 young freshman reading them as I was there. Once again your incredible words and thoughts will help young men succeed.

Re: Lax
At my sons HS we have been struggling with this for years. Most the football players that are not linemen play lax now. They used to all play basebal. They have a winning tradition and have won more state championships than any team in Ohio. A lot of players get recruited to east coast schools to play. It does not help that middle school Lax is no cut. While baseball still is. Many parents see the scholarships and put their kids in lax instead of baseball. Once cuts happen in HS some try and...

Re: Please help provide some direction?
Wow, lots of good info there. Sounds like a fellow parent trying to do the right things. My guy is at La Salle, also a Junior, PM me if you want to talk local stuff. Depending on what school your son is at, i.e. if its Bishop Hendricken, might determine whether or not his lack of Varsity play is a true determinant of value. My guy swung between JV and Varsity last year and that is based on having some talent in the face of a coach who is very loyal (and I agree with him!) to his upper...

Re: Please help provide some direction?
No, he's not at Hendricken, but his varsity coach is also quite loyal to upperclassmen, to the point that even in blowout games last year, the "swing" players didn't get to swing. The only swing players who got any varsity time were those who were needed to fill-in for injured players. We registered him w/ NCAA a couple months ago. I've also created a spreadsheet and we did some collegeboard searches, as well as compiled lists of D1/2/3 schools. Then, like you, I've visited their websites to...

Midlo i have not had poor encounters my 15yr old enjoyed playing in the 18u top 16 finish and playing in the 16u as well. I have attended these in various forms for years. trust me i dont want to name names but there are a lot of weak teams. Anyone from GA knows east cobb has about 2 very good teams and the rest are between good and very bad. Look at records from even local events much less national. It is not hard to get in the tourney. Also many places enter several teams say a a/b/c team.

Re: Baseball Program Philosophy
Ironhorse- why the hostility? So what you are saying if a parent (you assume I am a parent of a high school kid, I am not) has a question about the program and a philosophy, then they are bad and the team does not need them? That is odd to say the least. This board has very good baseball minds and lots of coaches. I am not a great baseball coach/mind. I am looking feedback. Lots of folks responded about the 6 minute mile and now I get it and support it. I asked another question about how...

Re: Baseball Program Philosophy
The hostility is because you have some sort of agenda here. You tried to bash a coach on one issue and got no real support. So you crawfished and tried to hammer another (much more fictional) issue. If a coach told you, in person, that he would not be instructing any kids this year, go straight to your AD. Period. I have a feeling this didn't actually happen. So you came to a message board. This all just sounds way too unbelievable. More than likely the issue is with you or the player, not...

Re: Northwest Coach Resigns
I have to agree with both txbball14 and Haltom Scout. I am lucky, the head football coach I work with is great. We have partnered up very well I think. His dad coached baseball in college and even though he did not play, he is still a fan and understands. He comes to all home games and all the in town road games. We share quite a few players at Summit and the kids know that when it is football season the focus is football. When it is basebal season the focus is baseball. It is no coincidence...

Gents, Very weak! FYI I am not a player (my time has come and gone). Please keep in mind the original point was the bill brought before the floor of our great state. I don't know about you but I am sick & tired of politicians grandstanding on issue they have no clue on. It is way to easy for these bone heads to jump on the soapbox "on behalf of the safety of our children". The reality is metal or wood basebal can be dangerous. Re: PAY FOR PLAY POLL
Sorry for you guys who all took this to the extreme. Who in the world would admit such thing like "PAY for PLAY"? I am only talk about close situations here. In a large class HS, except 2 or 3 outstanding players, I am sure from 4-12 are all fairly good, but you only got 9 spots on the field, so who would you start from #4 to #12 player? Most coaches would prefer the kids whose parents have been "involved" more with the team when the players are in the same talent level. This is the case not...

Here is one article I came up with. http://kdka.com/health/basebal...juries.2.759074.html FWIW, my son's BF mom told me when down in Alabama many years ago, Dr. Andrews was already treating 9 and 10 year old pitchers for injury. I do beleive there in those injuries has resulted in current recommendations. I do beleive there have been 9 and 10 years olds requiring surgery down in Alabama. Also while up in STL last summer, the doctor told me the best thing I ever did for son was limit his...

Re: 10yo pitching question...
I will agree with you on that last paragraph. You mentioned that injury happens to players who both pitch and catch at the same time (same game). Overuse from "throwing hard" in too close of a timeframe without recovery from fatigue and normal muscle stress is what leads to chronic pain. Two years ago I took my kid off of a travel team because son was being used to much at the pitching position. The wierd part of it at the time was that I took him off mainly because other parts of his body...

Re: D3 Bids to the CWS
Thanks BLD, great explanation. This was maddening to me early on when my son started playing D3 ball on a very competitive national team. We would get stuck in a Regional with 3-4 top ten nationally ranked teams and they were arguably the second best team in the country a couple of years ago and were left at home because they ran into the best team in the country in their Regional. You just never saw this in D1 ball where they would seed Regionals nationally, which they do not do in D3 ball.

Re: D3 Bids to the CWS
Though some bad teams make it through and some very good teams stay home, people should know that the D3 teams that REGULARLY go deep into the regionals and possibly beyond are really very competitive. We're talking about a very high level of college baseball. Though I wouldn't compare such teams to teams that go deep at the D1 level, we are still talking some very serious ball. You shouldn't think of playing for teams of that caliber as an easy thing to pull off.

Re: Baseball shape - two sport athlete.
My 2013 went to the Duke fall camp. First he was being looked at with the previous coaching staff. After making contact with Coach Pollard he asked for video and transcript. His travel team coach who is from North Carolina called Pollard to see if he was looking for pitchers. He told him yes but he needed to see him. Coach Hayes called to make sure he was coming. So he went to the camp and pitched great. 90mph fastball great slider and changeup. Pollard was more involved with running the...
