I guess it's time to start the 2004 Class as I was informed today that John Lalor of Houston HS has commited to Mississippi State and Zach Cozart of Collierville HS has commited to Clemson University.

Congratulations to two of the state's top players in making their choice to attend two top programs. laola

And the "Big Orange" beat goes on and on and on. Frown

Poles,
That's interesting news on Cozart. My first reaction on his Clemson news what that I knew Taylor Harbin (SS) from Traveler's Rest, South Carolina had already committed to Clemson and he is a very good player. I've watched him for years with the SC Spirit. He holds the South Carolina prep career home run record with 43 going into his senior year this spring.

I think that one has been a done deal for some time.

Bizzaz and CBG,
Don't worry about the "Big Orange". I understand the air miles are pilling up from flights to Califorina and Florida and news of incoming freshman will soon follow.

What everyone forgets is that players can run faster and throw the ball harder from the warm climate in those states. By the time they get to Tennessee they have a swagger in their gait that our local boys just never have.

I personally think that the swagger is from money in their pockets while our boys only get books.Eek

Hiwassee,
It's tough to give congrats to a Bammer but (quietly) congratulations to the Iorg family. Are you suggesting that Rod might miss a good Tennessee player every now and then? Big Grin
Fungo

Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience.
HV:
I am catching this fall with the South Carolina Spirit and Taylor Harbin is playing shortstop.Taylor is one of the best at this position. He has the speed, glove and arm to make any D1 coach rise to his feet. He has made some unbelieveable plays this fall against very good competition. Taylor's bat speaks for itself. He has one of the smoothest and most powerful swings I have seen this year. He has the ability to sit on the curve and take the fastball out of the park. He sprays the ball really well. I haven't played with or seen Zach but if he is as good as Taylor Clemson has to be grinning!!!
After watching Kyle Waldrop play baseball for years and seeing him mature as a person as well as a player, I'm pleased to announce that Kyle has given his commitment to further his education and play baseball for Vanderbilt University. laola

This past year has been a whirlwind for the Waldrop family that saw a fantastic high school season end with a state championship and lofty national ranking for Farragut HS. Kyle went on to be recognized for his play at Farragut HS, the Sunbelt tournament, East Coast Prospect and by Baseball America.

Take a deep breath, you deserve it!thumb

Wow! Today is shaping up to be some kind of day for players in the state.

Philip Reed, of Memphis University School has commited to Baylor University laola

(Dulins Dodgers) {BA-PPlus} (2003 .422 BA, 49 Hits, 13 2B, 3 3B, 3 HR, 40 Runs, 29 RBI's, 22 BB, 19 SB) ( 2003 DII West Tennessee All- Conference Team) (2003 All-Metro) (2003 TBCA All-Region Team) (TSWA All-State 2003) (10-30-03 Memphis, TN—Memphis University School senior Philip Reed has committed to play baseball at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, next year. The senior, who has played varsity baseball at MUS since the eighth-grade, will sign a national letter of intent with Baylor on November 13 for an academic and athletic scholarship. Reed is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Kevin Reed of Memphis. Reed has amassed an impressive list of accomplishments as an Owl baseball player. He was named to the All-Conference/All-Metro team in 2000, 2001, and 2003, and holds several individual season records at MUS including: Most At Bats (116), second Most Hits (49), second Most Doubles (13) and third Total Bases (77). In 2003, Reed hit .422 with 40 runs scored and was named to the Tennessee Sports Writers Association (TSWA) Division 2 All-State team. He also was a member of the 17-years and under Dulins Dodgers, an elite competitive summer team. “Baylor has one of the best baseball facilities,” Reed said. “When I visited the campus, I really liked the coaches and players and felt I would fit in well.” He believes playing baseball for Baylor will be a great experience and he is excited at the prospect of being a member of such an established program. “Baylor is a baseball school,” he said. “Their team is incredible and all the fans go to the games, so I’ll be playing in front of about 4,000 fans. It’s a great environment.” The Baylor baseball team was ranked in the Top 20 in 2003 by all major polls—eleventh by Baseball America, thirteenth by Collegiate Baseball and fifteenth by ESPN. The team has also appeared in the last six NCAA tournaments and was Big 12 champion in 2000. “Last year, Baylor was runner-up in the Big 12 Tournament, an NCAA Regional winner and one game away from the College World Series. Coach Steve Smith, his staff and players have shown the consistency and success to be considered one of the top programs in the country,” said Head Coach Marc MacMillan, MUS class of 1992. MacMillan was a star baseball player while at MUS, as well as a former player at the University of Mississippi. In addition to his baseball achievements, Reed has maintained a high grade-point average and is involved in a variety of extracurricular activities, including varsity basketball, Mu Alpha Theta, Spanish club, and the Ethnic Relations club. He has volunteered for MIFA Meals on Wheels and has been involved with Young Life. Reed was also named to the Dean’s List during his freshman and junior years.“I am extremely excited for Philip and his family. He is a fine young man who has put a great deal of time and effort into both his academics and athletics, and this is a great opportunity for Philip to not only be challenged academically but also compete in a conference that is rich in tradition and talent,” said MacMillan.

Congratulations to Philip and family!

A hearty congratulations to Kyle and Steve. With all the attention and "promises" that Kyle has received, I'm sure it was a difficult decision. I'm sure the Waldrop household is relieved.

I've been a "Vandy hater" most of my life. However, as far baseball goes, I'm going to have to change my ways and at least show them a little respect. I wish the best for Kyle and the other "Tennessee Studs" that are finding their way to Nashville.

When the Vols and Dores play on the diamond, you'll still see me wearing orange. But it doesn't mean as much as it used to.

TallVol-will you be changing your username?
I don't know Phillip Reed -- but Baylor is a GREAT Prgram. My close friend and former Teammate Craig Reynolds sent his son Kyle to Baylor and he has had a terrific experience. Also Mark McCormick is probably the most talented RHP I have even seen in College. Hope the Dores can hang with them when they travel to "Senic" Waco in March.
cbg,
Some of these kids had nice offers from Ray-Ban, but he didn't get any takers. I can only imagine that they didn't think the best "fit" was in Knoxville at this time.

What is worse, not making a good offer to instate talent or getting turned down after making a good offer?

Hamiliton will have to figure that one out, it's way over my head. noidea

Congratulations to each of the latest committments!

Hoop, Kyle and Phillip! Way to go guys.

Whoooooo Hooooooo!

As for the problems that seem to continue here in Knoxville.....sighhhhhh

First it was the local guys not being recruited at all, now it is good offers being made to the area's and the state's best players and no serious consideration being given to the offer.

I am privvy to the reasons that these offers are not considered and personally feel the players and families are making the correct choice in looking elsewhere.

As of today I am not aware of any top players in Tennessee that will commit to UT this year. Too bad, it's been another banner year for in-state talent.

Thanks to all for the recognition and congratulatory comments! It has been quite a ride these last few months. manrunning Kyle is very excited about his choice, as are his parents. And he is very happy to have the decision over with. clap

A special thanks to those of you who made yourselves available to answer my questions and help us through this process. It would have been a much more difficult adventure without you. Eek

There were many reasons to pick Vanderbilt-too many to list. Coach Corbin and his great staff are at the top! I can tell you this, his current players absolutely believe in what he is doing there. That came through clearly to Kyle.

And Bizazz, you may be right. Any suggestions? biglaugh
