TxDad -- UTPANAM loved to throw around schtik....at one point, he proclaimed that 9-5A would have the #1 overall pick! I continually challenged him on it.....but he would never discuss it further.

It looks like the only 9-5A pick on day 1 was.....ummmmm....Eric Ridener (formerly of Plano East), who was drafted in the 8th round by Pittsburgh.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm....UTPANAM has retired, I think.

No Linebaugh, Blue, or Clark......yet. No Arrieta or Bishop or Corgan.

CJ and Drew are injured and Preston's is a question of signability.

I think it is a mistake to think that kids were somehow "over-rated" if they are not drafted. Not that anyone is doing that here.....but some read too much into this process.

Having said that, I thought someone would take a "flyer" on Clark. Apparently, a few teams were poised to call his name in rounds 8-10, but UT baseball is an attractive alternative.
I can't speak for Preston, but I can tell you Randall's situation. Randall signed a NLI with every intent of going to Baylor unless he was given life changing money. That is what we told Coach Smith and we had no reason to change that position. All the scouts that I spoke with were given a round or bonus money it would take to get him to sign, obviously knowone felt he was at that level. We did receive two calls during the draft to see if our position had changed and if we would sign for a certain amount, we declined. We aren't interested in a DNF, playing in Baylor is going to be a great atmosphere and close to home. Don't get me wrong we would have loved to hear Randall's name called out, but we will wait 3 years and see what happens.

Preston is a great talent, along with several other area players that I haven't heard called, I am sure some of their stories are similar to ours.

Congradulations to all area guys that did get drafted!!!

Kevin,
I hate to sound like sour grapes, but once again the Wichita Falls area is overlooked on this site. Although you obviously spent a good bit of time compiling your list, you left off the #10 Texan taken in the draft. Former WF Rider star, B.J. Szymanski (Princeton), was the 48th player taken in the draft as the 7th pick in round 2 by the Reds. This is the 2nd Wichita County player taken on the first day of the draft in three years. Iowa Park pitcher Chase Wright was taken in the 3rd round by the Yankees in 2002. Another former Rider star, Jeff DeMontel, was drafted by the Marlins in 2002 and is currently making his way up the minor league ladder.

Teagarden will be at UT for at least one more year -- I know he played a lot of 1B -- sharing time with Thigpen there and behind the plate.

I assume Preston and Taylor will do likewise in 2005, although I'm not sure Clark has seen any action from other defensive positions (1B, 3B?). Obviously DH is another option for Augie -- it's good to be king, eh?

Nine Longhorns drafted yesterday -- wow. It seems that if you pay your dues there, pro baseball will be an option.

8Baugh Dad, I admire that yall stuck to your guys during the draft. As a big Baylor baseball fan and supporter I am excited about Randall being a Bear and am looking forward to watching him play next year. The Baylor ballpark is indeed a special place and next year has a chance to be a special season.

Congrats and good luck.

Thanks!!! We have been to several games at the Ballpark and it is indeed quite an atmosphere. The Bears have one of the best facilities in the Nation and Randall is really looking forward to the Challenge. I know the guys were very dissappointed with how things ended up this year, so many one run games!

See you on the Baylor message board someday.

It was a frustrating season indeed. However the talent is there to go far. I look for the experience of this season and the hunger it will instill to really help us next year.

If you come to Waco any during Fall ball come down and introduce yourself above the home dugout. Several of us will be in attendance at most intrasquads. I've made some great lifelong friends through BU baseball. You'll also need to join us next season for tailgating. A great time is most definitely always had by all.

FYI, I'm cooter1 on baylorfans.com

Another Texan who was drafted is LHP John Rodriguez (more commonly known as Craig Rodriguez when he was in high school). He was drafted in the 31st Round by Tampa Bay (915th overall). Craig is a 2003 graduate of Houston St. Pius X High School, where he helped his team win the TAPPS Class 5A State Championship his senior year. He played at Pearl River CC (I believe that is in Mississippi) this past season.
