I must say I am almost 90% sure I watched Slater play outfield for the first time (or towards the beginning). 12 year old Super Series in Gulfport Mississippi. Picked a ball up off the wall in center and threw it to third base on a line, not touching the ground... I think I knew right then. Oh, and he won the speed competition for that tournament and the AAU.
The major D1 programs get the pick of the litter. No doubt. And there will be a lot of scholarships at the major D1's committed this fall. However, these programs may lose a player or two (sometimes as many as three or four) to the draft. Slight possibility of grades taking out a player. Etc. And this can make scholarships available for other players.

But you have to remember, the verbals going on now and the NLI's that will be signed soon are based on performance during the past year. Particularly this past summer.
That's a great question on who will actually end up at the college they signed with. A couple of players from Montgomery high school most likly will see different zip codes. Cody Springer who signed with SHSU will most likly be drafted fairly early, also Chance Eggleston has some serious interest from D1 schools looking to sign him in April. Could be middle rounds of June draft.

Basefan.....do you know the Eggleston kid very well? If so, did his dad play in the minor leagues with the Orioles? I played with an Eggleston, who was a pitcher back in the early to mid 80's, seems like his first name was Chris Eggleston. I was wondering if maybe Chance was his son.

Basefan12,
Great point on the JUCO signees that may go D1 if they have a big spring. You went in a different direction than what most folks think of when the question is asked - that the player doesn't go to the D1 school because of the draft. There is also the Jordan Walden scenario, where he signed with Texas but is at a JUCO. I think there are several players in the state who could opt out of a D1 for a JUCO based on draft opportunity in '08.
Uncle E....

The lure of drafting a HS player, and going to a JUCO may begin to lose favor with the MLB execs, as the "draft and follow" rules has been eliminated.

quote:
The rules have since changed. The term draft-and-follow has gone extinct starting in 2007. Drafted players, other than college seniors, must be signed by August 15.

The draft-and-follow enabled clubs to maintain exclusive rights to a drafted player up until one week prior to the next year’s draft, if that player attended junior college. The club, however, lost any rights when a drafted high schooler decided to attend a four-year college or a drafted college player returned to school and attended his first class.

Draft-and-follow was often employed to enable an emerging player to gain another year of experience but still allow the drafting team the option to attempt to sign him before he would be eligible to re-enter the draft the following June.

Teams no longer have that luxury.

More and more, you are seeing the MLB teams take the seasoned college players, especially pitchers, over the HS players. At the D1 level, the play is approaching that of the lower minor league systems.

Be good,
David
There is a connection to Chris Eggleston from the Orioles. He is a cousin to Chance's grandfather who is now retired down in Florida. I understand they do not have much contact. I did find out that the Orioles have contacted Chance and expressed an interest for the upcoming draft. Turns out the Orioles have a cross checker scout that lives in the Houston Area.
