Who are the worthy nominees for this year's 30 man state-wide roster, who will be invited to attend a great banquet at Camden Yards in January, to celebrate this year's selections?

These early candidates will no doubt be considered "players to watch" for selection to the MSABC Classic (East vs. South / North vs. West played in Southern Maryland), Team Maryland (Sun Belt Classic in Norman, OK), Four State Elite Classic (Hagerstown Stadium) and the "grandaddy of them all" -- The Brooks Robinson Sr. All-Star Game (Camden Yards).

These post season events take place in May and June and all four are first rate "all-star" experiences that are a fitting conclusion to some great high school careers. Good luck to all!

Tickets to the Preseason Awards Banquet sold by Mt. St Joe's at 410-646-6222, about $50 each.

Dinner on Feb 21 2009, at Camden Yards at 7:00 pm.
Adult beverages at 6:30.

All-State Team introduced at banquet. Some of the HS Coaches (and his five assistant coaches) who voted at Dec 11 meeting could probably tell you before hand, the thirty five (or so) HS on the Pre-Season All State team.

Congrats to the nominees.
Agree that some key players were left off the list. If you have a problem with knowing that a deserving player was omitted, then look the kid's coach square in the eye and ask whether he was there to support the worthy player's nomination.

Next opportunity is the try out for the MSABC Region All-star team (North,South, East, West) in May. 80 juniors and seniors will be selected to play in these one day, doubleheader all-star games. From that day, the Team Maryland and Brooks Robinson Senior All-Star teams are selected. It's a shame when certain coaches just don't give a **** to promote ALL of the best players to represent the state of Maryland.

BTW, a certain coach at a well-known Baltimore area power was "too busy" to nominate the Baltimore Sun 2008 Player of the Year, who has a very nice scholarship to Wake Forest next year.

Congratulations to all of the players selected!!!

Just some thoughts:

1.)I would think that by now 100% of these players should have committed to a college if they are that good to make this pre-season team.

2.)Please post all commitments to this website. If it is not 100% complete, then it is obvious the list is bogus.

Please respond to this thread ASAP.This should get really interesting and juicy.

Thanks

P.S.Are there any prerequisites to the MSABC tryouts?
We all know how the players are selected by their high school coaches. Either you are an exceptional player (some) or your parents are overly involved in the program (I know of two on the list from the same private school in PG). The individuals representing this organization know who the really good players--which should not take a coach nominating a player. In contrast, they are also quite aware of the players that are promoted by their coaches because of the the parents financial or coaching involvement.
Good luck!!

baseball12532,

Was curious why the MSABC Tryouts arn't held after the season is over. Last year many players were still in the playoffs and still practicing with their teams. In my sons case they had just come off a eleven inning game and still had to prepare for their next game. IT's kind of hard to tryout for a team (especially if your a pitcher)a day after one game and a day before the next. Most teams are trying to rest their arms. I know my son wanted to tryout last year but just felt it was to much. Can't really remember but I think they may have had a practice the same day as your tryout. Can the players that can't attend because of this get a seperate tryout? Was just curious.

Bandit,
I'm just a parent, like you. My beef is with high school coaches who don't support their players by nominating them if they are worthy.

I really have no idea on why the tryout date, but know that the pitchers only threw about ten pitches in the bullpen as part of the tryout last year, and there was consideration for pitchers still in the playoffs (Mike Boyden pitched in the BR game and pitched his team to a championship, so it can be done). The selection process should primarily be based on what a player did during the season.

Both events (BR All Star & Team MD) are spectacular events that should feature Maryland's brightest stars. Although there are some notables who are not selected, what's worse are the notables who didn't even get a chance to try out because the coach couldn't care less about sending in some simple paperwork! Last year, with few exceptions, the very best representation was selected. I hope it is the same or better this year.

baseball12532,

You don't have to tell me about Mr. Boyden, that's who my son played in the championship game. My son said not only did he have very good velocity, but had great control of his breaking pitches. He also seemed like a very nice young man. I think he has a bright future ahead. At least my son got the only extra base hit off of him.

As to coaches not supporting their players I agree to a certain extent. A few years ago I probably would have gotten upset that my son wasn't nominated this year. Last year he made The Sun All-County Team and 2nd Team All-Metro, but here's how I look at it now. My son has gone thru some very serious injuries and fought back just for the chance to follow his dream. As a parent I've learned to appreciate how lucky I am just to watch him play this game, and my wife and I cherish every moment good or bad. I think sometimes we get to caught up in awards. I do believe that the coaches that fight to get their players exposure should be commended but I'm not so sure a preseason team is a very good idea. I think you play the season then give your awards. When all the coaches don't participate it not only leaves players off the list but to me more importantly opens the players on the list to doubt which I feel is wrong. I don't know all the players on the list but the one's I do know are very good ballplayers. Like I posted last year these young men should be recognized as some of the best ballplayers in the state and don't get upset if your son is not on the list. Also commend the coaches who are trying to showcae their players, it sure beats the alterative of coaches doing nothing for their players. Sorry for the long post but this topic seems to get hot every year.

My advice is to sit back and enjoy watching your son play because it can end at any moment.

Good luck to everyone this year and lets hope everyone stays healthy.

As a 2nd team All Met, your son probably should have been trying out for the post season MSABC all star teams. Why didn't he show up? Did his coach fail to nominate him? Sorry, that's just wrong if he's good enough to have been given a shot to make either BR, TM or both and was denied. Like you said, it could end at any moment. Hope he tries out and makes it this year. Good luck!

I would characterize the list as "incomplete", certainly not "bogus". Coaches could still right the wrong by making sure that their best players show up for consideration at the MSABC tryouts in May.

Let's hope that what happened to Loyola's crew doesn't happen again -- last year's seniors Kirby (Georgetown)and Hahn (Navy) and All-MIAA selections juniors Hoppes, Shields and Taylor were not even informed by their coach of the opportunity to try out for the North team.

And certainly, returning All- League/ MSABC Region All-Stars/ Team Md players should get consideration for the Pre Season All-State team, but it's really more important what the player actually does this season. Good luck!

Bandit,
I can tell you that Patapsco did not have practice as the tryouts are on Sunday. Every year we have kids who are still playing in the states but all they have to do is show up. We understand that the states come first. Things are on a tight schedule due to having to get the stadium booked as well as the classic and start forming Team Maryland. And a slight correction is that anyone can nominate a kid only members can vote. The problem is I cant do justice to a kid I dont coach other then say he hit the ball good or say in our 1 game he was 3/3 or whatever. Why any coach member or not cant take 5 mins and nominate the kid is amazing. I know forms go to each and every school in Maryland
Spike,

I hope it didn't sound like I was complaining because I wasn't. Also I can understand the time frame involved. Due to all the rain last year it was hard to just get the playoffs in. That's why I asked if there were other times to tryout as I wasn't familiar with the process. If it was held on Sunday then I know they were off that day. Tony Maggard did give everyone the paperwork but I think everyone was to focused on the playoffs to go. As to my son yes he wanted to attend your tryouts but because of all the games and practices we didn't let him. He was coming back from a major elbow surgery and it was just to much. IF all goes well this year with no setbacks he will be able to tryout this year.

As to the nominations, It is a little sad that all coaches don't get involved more but it is what it is. Also like I posted previously you need to give credit to the coaches that take the time to promote their players and not criticize the players that are nominated. I wouldn't expect a coach that has maybe seen my son only once to nominate him. IT needs to be somebody that see's him on a regular basis. As I said before give credit to these ballplayers as being some of the best players in the State and don't get upset if your son was not listed.

Also Spike it sounds like your a coach and if you are good luck with your season. As for me I'm just happy my son can still take the feild and I can sit back and watch.

Lets hope for a warm up so they can get back on the feild!

Hey guys...howz it going SPIKE!

As a former high school and summer league coach, let me try to explain why some coaches don't go the extra five minutes for their players.

I want to caveat this by saying when I was coaching, I believe I went over and above for any kid in my program who deserved it. Unintentionally, I probably helped some kids along the way who didn't deserve it (if you know what I mean).

High school baseball coaches have a pretty brutal job for about 3 or 4 grand. Field maintenance, battling weather, sore arm from 1,000 batting practice pitches, etc...all these things take time and lots of effort. Many of these guys aren't tuned in to the MSABC cause they simply don't have the time to do so. Many work other jobs, have FAMILIES, etc...and keeping straight which deadline you need to meet so a kid can play in an all-star game isn't always priority to some of these guys. I also suspect some of these guys aren't too thrilled about propping up some prima dona who is almost as much trouble as he is worth.

None of this is personal experience or directed at anyone on this board. I'm simply trying to rationalize what seems to you, me and others as standard operating procedure for a high school baseball coach.
Spike,

I'll do that. My son is just glad they get to play you guys. Andrew also plays s****r and they play your school plus all the other local schools in s****r every year but for some reason the baseball schedule is terrible. I watched your tournament game against Loch Raven last year. Was there to watch Jordan Heller who we played against alot. He had a good game against you guys. Was told you didn't lose many players so you should be pretty strong this year. Well again good luck this year and see you at the game.

While the honor is quite an accomplishment, it's unfortunate that in reality, the top selected players may not necessarily be the very best that the state has to offer. Sadly, sometimes outstanding players never get considered because of various circumstances. Their school may be without a coach to recommend them, or their coach may not be able to - or have an interest in attending the function in order to make a case for their player(s). It's really quite a shame in my opinion, but I don't imagine that a perfect system exists. There's one player in my mind that sticks out who has made virtually every other watch list for the last several years. But I'll keep that to myself, because it's my opinion - and just that... an opinion.

Congratulations to the gentlemen who have been so honored. Although the system isn't perfect, there's no question that the names listed there are very deserving young men.

FYI -- this list is a total joke. As was noted last year, a kid that lives Maryland but attends school in DC is NOT considered --- Why.....because it allows the coaches from Maryland to promote their kids from a much smaller pool and a much less talented pool. Fact.......check the kids that lived in Maryland that attended DC schools last year and the Division I colleges they attended versus the kids living and attending high school in Maryland. The true rankings of kids residing in Maryland is from Baseball America and Perfect Game which lists kids that reside in Maryland and attend schools in DC as part of the Maryland ranking. The number one and two recruits from Maryland (last year -- as noted by Baseball America, and Perfect Game) -- both High School Americans by at least five different organizations were not included on this list. - This Maryland Baseball Coaches fabrication cheapens the overall goal of the designation.
Problem I have with all of this. I always thought the site was to promote Baseball in Maryland. However, most times all I see is whining and sour grapes on this site. Kids make lists, some do not, its not the end of the world. Sometimes you get hired, sometimes you do not. This is a good lesson for parents and kids in the fact that life is not fair and there is always some factor working against you in life.

Season is starting for all, good luck!
