It is not my judgement at all. It was that of the school's who de-committed. I like him a lot as a player and think he will do VERY well in the Big 10.
Just-a-kid, It was a bit personal but how do you propose other recruits be forewarned of the practices of particular schools if it is not "put out there?" Just say that certain named schools left players hanging, decommitting two or three players after those players passed on offers from other D-1 programs, all without naming any player? That maintains the privacy but leaves folks wondering if there is truth to the statements or just part of a rumor mill.

Concur with WB. I don't think it was personal, just trying to convey some great info to the rest of us.
Redbird, I believe you have quickly drawn conclusions on Kevin's situation. The situation he was in was very different than other kids in the past that you might know. The rumor of South Carolina decreasing their offer is 100% false. The White's prior predicament should be confidential to their family and who they decide to share that information with. Kevin made a very wise decision considering all of the aspects of baseball AND academics. He should be praised for his decision not ridiculed.

No, not a good precedent and Kevin was not the only player who received that treatment. The actions by that college and others who reduced or withdrew offers based upon (1) high school and summer performance or (2) the school found someone better, did not go unnoticed by other recruits in the recruiting process. I heard a number of recruits talk, recruits who were doing the math and calculating that if the number of committments being made were in the upper teens / low twenties, something was going to have to give.

Don't know how you get info out there without mentioning names, though I will refuse to do that. I will name schools though--- Have heard from a very close source to the family of another Virginia-based 2011 HS recruit to South Carolina that has had his "offer/commitment" changed. Understand kid still plans to go to USC "as walk-on". Hmmm???

Must be in the water down there-- FYI, Clemson "relieved" a player of his obligation to the school last spring. Who knows what goes into these decisions. May be the best thing that can happen to a player if he is not going to get playing time but--- quite a different story at Wake Forest, given the recent news about Coach Walter and Kevin Jordan. Jordan, projected as a 1-3 round pick in MLB draft before he fell ill, fell to 19th round based on senior year. most schools still want a 19th rounder, but by summer, Jordan is on dialysis and looking at possibly never playing but school still honors scholarship.
Once the NLI is signed, it has to be honored for its one year term, unless the player is guilty of misconduct, flunks out, etc.

I'm happy to support Wake, but the truth is that reducing Jordan's money last summer was not an available option.

I can tell you, Wake has, in recent years, released one signed recruit due to off-field misconduct (DUI's). And it has also reduced players' money from year to year. Some have even been zeroed out.

It's a cutthroat business some times. But bear in mind, if the reason a kid got reduced is because of the kid's having done something bad, the school is not going to announce that publicly. This makes it hard to tell if the program is really screwing a kid over, or not.

The worst situation I ever saw was in 2008, when one in-state school made an offer in January, got a handshake agreement with a player, and then reneged a month later for no reason other than that the coach found another player he liked better for putting his last scholarship money into for the April signing period. Player is now happy as a clam at another program, but I'll never forget that this happened and I'll never fail to warn anyone looking at that particular school that the deal isn't binding until the paper work is signed.

you are right about the one year commitment. my comments may have not have been clear there. With only 11.7 scholarships to spread across 27 or more kids, every school is under pressure to use the money efficiently.

I wish the "early signing" or early verbal commits were somehow done away with. It was a long time ago but I went to college on a football scholarship. Schools could not offer until first week in December, signing day was in mid -January. Those six weeks were hectic for everyone but players wieighed offers and a lot of shuffling went on.

If colleges were not allowed to offer baseball (verbally) before fall of recruit's senior year--some of this would play out differently.
I am OK with early commitments generally, but I agree it's accelerating too far back. Jan. 1 of junior year would be early enough for me. I just don't see any reason why someone has to commit before then, and if no one could offer before Jan. 1 the programs would probably be happy to be relieved of the "arms race" to get kids committed early.

You and I might compromise somewhere in between, but Sept. 1 to me is too late. Players need to make plans, and teams need the opportunity to piece together all the parts of the 11.7 puzzle.
Please add to the List:

Congrats to the following RBAWEST Players- 2011 Commits

1.Brandon Pierce MINF-Tucker- Louisburg CC (NATIONAL TEAM)
2.Daniel Timberlake UTL-Cosby- Catholic University of America (CENTRAL TEAM)
3.Weldon Vaughn LHP-Deep Run- Tennessee Wesleyan (AMERICAN TEAM)
4.Jeffery Zona RHP-Hanover -Palm Beach Jr. College (AMERICAN TEAM)
5.Corbin Lucas OF-Fort Defiance- Shenandoah University (NATIONAL TEAM)

Thats makes a total of 7 commitments from our 3 teams this fall and 11 overall that train with us.
