When I first looked at the rosters for this year's World Showcase I saw a name that surprised me. His name is Rusty Shellhorn a not so big lefthanded pitcher from the state of Washington. He is the son of HSBBW late night poster... "Bum"

Rusty has signed to pitch in the Pac 10 for Washington State. The last time we saw him he was OK, but nothing to get overly excited about IMO.

I walked into the stadium saturday and some distinguished looking man came up and said, "Excuse me are you Jerry Ford?" I said yes, getting ready for the first complaint of the day. He said what I thought was, "I'm a Bum". I looked at him wondering, what the... and he said Bum from the high school web.

Anyway, to somewhat change the subject regarding Cosart throwing 101 from the outfield, today I watched "Bum's" son Rusty pitch three innings against some good hitters. I am not exaggerating and everyone can count on this coming from a reliable source. THIS WAS AN ABSOLUTE TREAT FOR ME!

Rusty topped out at 88 mph but threw mostly 85-87 with a good breaking ball. That is good, but what set this young man apart was ACCURACY! He faced nine good hitters and carved them up. First pitch strike to all but one hitter. He struck that hitter out in four pitches. I’m not sure he threw any two pitches in the same spot but was painting every edge of the strike zone. He worked fast and hitters just looked helpless. Nine up, nine down, seven Ks. One weak pop up and one weak opposite side ground ball. We never got to see him out of the stretch except in warm-ups between innings. I don’t think he threw anything but strikes while warming up either.

I would pay to watch Rusty Shellhorn pitch again and probably will have to pay someday. It’s really a display of the art of pitching. Kind of scary to think little Rusty is going to throw 90 or better at some point! I talked to a scouting director after he pitched. The scouting director said, I kid you not, “Did you see that little lefty throw?”

So YES, there is more than power velocity to get excited about. He’s not big, he doesn’t throw 90 (YET), he probably isn’t going to be high on any draft lists (YET) but he’s going to be a real BEETCH for college hitters to face over the next few years. After that, nothing will surprise me.

Just thought some would like to read about another HSBBWebster’s son.

BTW, Bum is a pretty nice guy and so is his talented son Rusty.

YES SIR BABY!!!! Thats what Im talking about! Another Mac Reed!!!!! I love to hear these stories PG. Thank you so much for sharing. Just like when I saw JerseyDads son carve them up , or BaseballBuzz son carve em up. How about Gamers son at Jupiter. And dont forget Midlodads son throws straight up ched and mow them down. And many many more of our posters sons. I love to hear about our posters kids. This is a great story. Man I wish I could have been there to see it.
Anybody who has the same NYY logo as I, and has a son who is a crafty lefty, I will ask the baseball gods to grant that player an excellent changeup. That willl be the decisive pitch. Just think of Warren Spann or Whitey Ford, and believe.

I like Bum's posts and can tell he's intelligent and applies what he learns here for the benefit of his son. That is a plus father quality. Grades out higher for that attribute.

Theygrowupfast,

The reason I believe Bum’s son will throw 90 or better someday…

• I hope this isn’t taken the wrong way but he appears to be a good looking 14 year old boy on the mound.

• There is no doubt that he is going to get bigger and stronger

• He has nice fluid quick arm action

• He is already throwing 87-88

• It’s very obvious that he has a good work ethic and is deadly serious about the game based on how much improvement we have seen in a relatively short period of time. This did not happen by accident! It hardly ever happens accidently.

That said, I don’t think he ever has to throw 90+ to be effective. But I think it could happen before he becomes a sophomore in college, if not sooner. Maybe much sooner. Call it a guess!

CoachMay,

Recently I heard someone (maybe a football coach) say he is the luckiest man on the face of the earth, Lou Gehrig has nothing on him.

Well sometimes that’s the way I feel when seeing some of these kids play. Unfortunately many of them don’t have parents that spend time on here. We sometimes watch five games in a day and pretty much end up half awake by that fourth or fifth game, but all it takes is one young man to do something special and I’m not only wide awake but ready for more.

I remember very well the examples you gave. And I too could give hundreds more examples. Like Michael Main throwing in the “high” 90s at 1:00 in the morning in Arkansas a couple years ago. I’ll never get tired of seeing something special. Bum’s kid was one of the special ones today. Just as Cosart was special in a different way yesterday. BTW, FloridaFan’s son was here too and got about 6 hits in two games. There might have been other HSBBW sons here this week and last, I’ll have to check that out the best I can.

Michael Main was fun to watch at the PG Nationals! What was also fun was when a batter was able to foul one off and the crowd cheered including all the coaches, scouts, players, and parents in the stands that stayed around to watch him throw!
Congratulations Bum and Rusty. Rusty...please take it easy on the Beavers! Other times we'll be rooting for you and the rest of the Cougars. Much success to you.

And as Jerry said..."Bum is a pretty nice guy and so is his talented son Rusty." I haven't met Rusty, but I've corresponded with Bum recently and if Rusty is anything like his father then Rusty's friends are very fortunate to have him as a friend.

Wow... a distinguished looking Bum. Now there's a visual for ya.
Coach May...from the Emerald City...wow! I'd never have guessed that. I would've guessed you were a Carolina guy through and through.

Spizzle and 44...thanks...sincerely.

Every once in a while I have to poke my head above the water for a gasp of air. I'll try to latch onto the keyboard then and fire up my brain and my trusty digit and bang out something or other and then aim for the Post Now button and launch a little nonsense into the swirling waters of the HSBBW.

Hey Spizzle...throw me another doughnut!

I know that Bum has worked very hard with his son and congratulations to Bum Jr., I love to hear these stories too!

However, not to get on a soapbox or highjack, these are the things I was speaking of from another thread. We know he has the ability, the rest is up to mother nature. Wink

Way to go Rusty!
Mother Nature can certainly help things happen, but I think Rusty throwing 90+ will happen with or without Mother Nature's help.

Because of the reasons below. Especially the last one.

PG I understood what you meant Smile. And it is definetly a positive comment, the younger he appears the more projectable he becomes.

Seems to me that some like their 17,18 year olds to look like 22,23 year olds (weight, height, etc). I don't believe in that theory. "Upside" can be very important in the scouting world, for those who wish to play baseball for a living someday. That's just my opinion.

This is an extremely important analysis for young pitchers who may read this thread. Thanks Jerry.

When working with my son he was graded on correctness on his pitching form throughout the pitching sequence...even if he threw a strike, if the form was not correct it was called a "ball" if it didn't hit the right location with an absolutely correct form.

Only interdict that because it sounds like "Bum" has required the same type of performance from his son to get those outstanding results. Great job "Bum".
