Well Monty, here's my attempt to help offer some hopefully solid advice,

Just tell your friend to play hard and make sure that if he makes any errors that they are minimal ones, and deffinately do not over pressure himself in the situation that he's in, hustle and work hard, show the coach that you want and deserve to make one of those 3 non returning spots, hope this helps your friend.

I never threw an illegal pitch. The trouble is, once in a while I toss one that ain't never been seen by this generation
Hustle

Don't joke around
Hustle

Dress like a ballplayer
Respect the game
If there is BP - Be pitch selective
Hustle

It might be a bit for this suggestion, - Plan ahead, be in shape and ready to play baseball

Did I mention Hustle & Listen?

Good Luck

First, give him a key point or two based on your experience with the coach. A little insight into his personality, likes/dislikes, etc never hurt.

My .01 for your friend.

Focus on the process, not the result. In other words, do the things necessary to succeed (see cong's list) and things will work out.

Concentrate on the tryout, and forget about if the coach did or didn't see something. Because if that's what you're focused on you're energy is wasted and you likely will underperform. Believe me, he'll notice you so just focus on your game.

If you feel yourself getting tense, take a couple of deep breaths, it will relax you.

Focus on what the goal is and you will be fine. Show the swagger it takes and prove that you belong.
If you run as a group finish in the first third.
If the team has to pick up balls, pick up more than your share.
Get there early each day and be loose before tryouts begin.
Be one of the last ones to leave each day.
Show respect to the coaches and the other players.
Don't put anyone down who makes an error or mental mistake, has a weak swing, etc.
Clean up your trash (empty water bottles, etc.).
