I try not to post about my son's success/failures on the diamond, but allow me this one opportunity to brag about something that actually means much more to me.

For the few that know me well, my son was academically ineligble, during the '04 season. Absolutely no excuses, other than the fact he enjoyed college life, far too much.

Fast forward to the fall semester of '05. My son made the Dean's List, with 5-A's and 1-B. There is nothing he can do on the diamond that will surpass this accomplishment. I believe the light switch finally came on, for him.

If all goes well, he may be able to graduate, next Xmas. Hopefully the light doesn't burn out before then.

Most of us probably have stories we could tell about the trials and tribulations of our sons/daughters, relating to their college experience. I'm posting this for those that may have a son/daughter struggling with maturity, when they take the big step of leaving home for college.

During the Xmas break of '03, the only thing that kept my son from being homeless was my best friend....his old high school coach. He told me to give him one final chance to mature. He believed in my son, more than I did, at that moment. I'm glad I listened.

I hope this post helps someone that may be going through that same family crisis that we experienced.

Be good,
David

Lefty, Congrats to your son and to you...

This is every parents worse nightmare! My son goes to a "famous" Party School (have yet to figure out which ones aren't if they want them to be) and everyone that we told that he was going there would say "aren't you worried that he will party too much?" So far, so good, thank the Good Lord!

Good luck to your son this season!
David,

You may not realize it but you have done a tremendous service for parents and kids alike with your post. Thanks so much for sharing with all of us!

BTW, I'm curious if the infamous "coffee incident" occurred a few years ago in Waco, Texas at a certain summer showcase? All of the aforementioned characters were in attendance at that event and that is where I met several of them. meeting

Ann
Ann,

You are the winner! It was Waco, summer of '01. If memory serves me, after just meeting Mr & Mrs Fungo for breakfast, I managed to knock her coffee over.......embarrassment to the Nth degree.

But seriously, you were right. Bob was there (Waco/Baylor) as a Feature Speaker. OPP was there for the Armadillo National Press Smile ....and Fungo Jr was there for the showcase. I believe there were others present, but I can't remember them all.

Be good,
David
leftydad - Yes, thanks bunches for sharing that! My JUCO son never took grades seriously in HS and appears to be starting on great footing in JUCO, but I won't breathe a sigh of relief until he has a diploma in his hand!!!! I hope that mine, yours and the other kiddos around here continue to shine in the classroom as well as on the field! Congrats to your son!!!! clap
David,

AH HA!! I thought that was it! I have some very fond memories of that showcase...I got to meet Bob, Luke and Gloria, and a few other websters. I think Luke pointed you out to me from a distance but I didn't get a chance to meet you personally. Maybe he was keeping us at a safe distance to protect us women, lol. We had some good times at that event. good

If we ever do get a chance to meet, the coffee's on me...well, you know what I mean. nono

A little side note.....that is the weekend I quit smoking. Hmmmm...the coffee's on you? Maybe we should try a frappacino. Smile

Good luck to your son the spring. I saw he was DH this weekend. Smile

David

From what I saw, OUBsbMom's son had an awesome series this weekend! With 9 ab's, he is currently batting .444 with a double and a triple under his belt already! Go Ryan, Go Ryan, Go Ryan.... party
LeftyDad, that is a wonderful and inspiring story about your son. You have every reason and numerous reasons to be proud of him.
Also, what a fabulous high school coach to stick by your son. There really cannot be too many more special things we do in life than making a difference for someone else, especially a teenager struggling for a meaning. That coach is a darn fine friend...like I am telling you something you don't know.
