IN THIS AGE OF PAYING DEARLY FOR ALL THESE SHOWCASES... THE RANGERS I BELIEVE DO THIS FREE OF CHARGE TO THE KIDS AND THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO HAVE THE NERVE TO DO ANY SORT OF COMPLAINING? TELL YOU WHAT, IF YOU ARENT HAPPY WITH THE SELECTIONS, JUST STAY HOME AND SEE HOW THAT WORKS OUT FOR YOU. SOMETHING THATS BASICALLY GOOD WILL AND WE HAVE PEOPLE QUESTIONING HOW IT WORKS. AMAZING!

I would venture to guess that MLB and it's teams get some compensation.

This guess is wrong. The AC games cost teams money. The Texas Rangers are doing Texas kids a huge favor by putting this together on their dime. Rivals makes money off of the 500 dollar agent passes, the 250 dollar scout passes, the 250 dollar coach passes, nike sponsers, sparq test sponsers, and what ever other vendor is paying the price.

This is true "select ball"....200 get invited, and 175 get sent home. 175 kids being sent home means 350 unhappy parents...its unfortunate, but very real.
Deemax
Make that 348 parents unhappy. We had a great time and were sent home. We consider it an honor just get the invite. My son just turned 16 2 weeks ago and he was extremely nervous. That all went away when he ran the 60 in 6.90. Not as "clean" as some fielding but swung the bat well. Well enough for a few good comments from coaches. Lots of exposure. Hope we get invited back.

Thats good to hear...The tryouts are incredible exposure, and you cant simulate that type of pressure based on performance...usually its much harder on the parents then the players.

**** ill miss the AC's this year...
My son is thankful for the opportunity. I am thankful that he was invited. I expect the pro prospects to make these teams -- there are a handful of pro prospects each year. The exposure (and the shirt Smile ) made the day worthwhile. I wish I had the chance to thank the scout that recommended my son, the Rangers, the AC committees, the coaches that came to watch.....as I said earlier, it was a good day.
My son was also very thankful for being invited. The shirt he loved, and the exposure was incredible. This was a great day for all the kids who were invited, no one should have felt like they failed because they did not make the team. Congratulations again to all the young men who had an opportunity to be part of the Area Code.
Great experience as well as an eye opener for Meat and I.

This try-out is all about throwing hard and running fast.

I wish some one had shared that with us via the board before the event.

There are a lot of average talented players out there and a player must try to find an edge. I think Meat realizes today that he will have to do a little better during the next Showcase or if he is fortunate enough to be invited back to the Area Code Try-out. That realization is he needs to workout every day, practice running 60's and spend more time in cage. We will also do our best to be in some type of pitching rotation so that his arm has built up strength and is fully rested and ready to go on that day, if that can work into what is going on with his summer team schedule. This year the coaches tried but the rain-outs and tournament schedules just didn't set him up to be at his pitching best on that day. Meat might not have been invited to the Area Code Try-out if not for the summer team he is on.

Even though Meat will be recruited as a pitcher he still attended the position player session. It made for a long day and his arm was a little tired by the time the pitching sessions were held. We will discuss how to approach the next event but I think he will still go through the position player sessions but he might trade in first base for outfield because I think that will give him a better chance to showcase his arm more than firstbase.

Overall, I didn't see any super studs. One of the pitchers I saw did hit 91, 91, 91, and they stopped him from throwing more and got to stay for the scrimmage. A lot of the guys that got picked to stay seemed just a little better than the others...just a little better....but that is the difference.

I will say that one of the best players on the summer team with Meat was not invited and the way he is swinging the bat he would have shown himself well. So not all the best talent was present and I am sure that player will be noticed and recruited in the future. I would also imagine many of the missing players were going to attend the next event.
MEATSDAD.........

I AM CONFUSED?....WHAT DOES YOUR SONS SUMMER TEAM HAVE TO DO WITH HIS INVITE? I THOUGHT SOMEONE SAID A SCOUT HAD TO INVITE YOU? IS YOUR COACH A SCOUT TOO? ARE "TEAMS" BEING INVITED?

MY SON WAS INVITED BY A SCOUT IN APRIL AND THE NUMBER OF PITCHERS INVITED WAS WAY OVER THE ESTIMATED NUMBERS THE SCOUT QUOTED. DOUBLED

THIS WAS A GREAT EXPERIENCE FOR OUR SON...BUT WE ARE STILL TRYING TO FIGURE OUT THIS EVENT AND THE WEIGHT OF THE EVENT. Confused

SHAME ON YOU DUDE! HE HAS BEEN CATCHING ME FOR THE LAST THREE SUMMERS...AND HAS BEEN VERY IMPORTANT IN DEVELOPING MY PITCHING GAME. JUST A THOUGHT FOR THE FUTURE.....GET AS CLOSE AS YOU CAN TO YOUR CATCHER THEY CAN MAKE OR BREAK YA KID. CATCHERS CAN SOMETIME TELL YA MORE ABOUT YOUR PITCHING THAN ANYONE. HIS POP IS STILL AN ECHO IN SAN ANTONIO THIS WEEKEND....I WILL AGREE WITH YA HE IS A BEAST.

Wo, wo, wo. Anyone knows me knows I love Matty. He's a beast that still has tons of room for improvement... it's scary. I'm sorry you took the post the wrong way. The kid is a gym/baseball rat and can never get enough.
Guys -- I don't see how being invited and participating in this event can be a bad thing. Some of you are taking things too seriously, like your sons' chances are somehow damaged by going.

Meatsdad -- what difference would it have made if you knew the semantics of the camp ahead of time? Your son, being an '09, should be excited to be alongside the older kids. And, as we have discussed here from time to time, it is nearly impossible to be at 100% as the event slides into the summer schedules.

As you all witnessed, if you ran a sub-7 60, you were probably invited to play in the game (not 100% the case) or if you threw 90 from the bump, from the OF, or across the IF. The pros are evaluating tools -- that's what they do when they see your son play in games as well. This was, in effect, a pro tryout camp. Do they miss kids on occasion? Sure. Are there politics involved? Who knows? But, I suggest all that attended view it as a positive experience and a wonderful opportunity.

I am not criticizing those of you that have ongoing questions about the camp's value. But, after all is said and done, aren't you glad your son was included? If he wasn't --- as others have testified --- there will be other chances to be seen.

It's all good. Cool
Hey Paw,

I don't get your response and in caps to boot. I hope you aren't upset at my post.

I mentioned the summer team because I noticed there were a lot of the players from the teams I know in the Dallas area. It seemed like the entire Dallas Tigers 16 team was there and for good reason. I imagine the scouts have good relationships with the guys that run the Tigers, Mustangs, Panthers, Patriots etc....

I think it is very possible that the scouts talk to these guys and get a list of players to look at and consider, that is all I am saying.

PD, it was a great day but I have learned to observe and consider how to approach opportunity. In this case, throwing from the outfield would give Meat a much better chance to showcase his arm. So next year when the subject comes up in this forum I will post a post that says this is an excellent chance and don't pass it up and go there with your eyes wide open and remember, throw hard and run fast because it is all good.

Meat is still enjoying the experience several days later and he seems to be a more little eager to go workout. What he saw was a much of talent players but not a lot of them that he could not be better then if he works hard. It doesn't matter if that is true or not, it matters that he beleives it and then it might actually happen.

Any information on the tryouts in Houston yesterday? How did things go down there?

Lots of very good pitching talent. Klein Collins Austin Dicharry 08 and Ross Sterlings Brett Marshall 08 were very impressive both 90+ while many juniors also showed promise. Another good looking prospect was big Benn Fairbanks 08 from FB Austin. Benn is 6'5" and is the starting QB for the Bulldogs FB team. He has a very live arm 87-90. I hope he goes baseball but I hear he's a pretty good FB player also. He tells me he will go with the best opurtunity. Katy has another jewel in Tyler Herr 09. He looks about 6'5 or 6'6 and has good stuff. He was 86 on the day but will no doubt increase velocity over the next couple seasons. Cy Fair's Tommy Collier 08 looked great at 90. He's going to look real good in 08. Mo Wiley was 89 on the day but I've seen him in the low 90's on more than one occasion. Mo has a great personality and is a fun kid to be around. It was hard for me to juge the hitting because it was in the cage but lots of good looking young hitters.
