i've read comments about this on here before, but someone please tell me why some people in the press box or announcer station feel compelled to play short audio clips between batters. Some of these are downright rude and offensive. What is the purpose? It seems to me the only purpose is to show how immature the announcer is.

PD,

I qualified my comment with "some people in the press box" and "some of these are downright rude". I have been to games where they are not offensive but still i question the purpose. it does seem they want to interject themselves into the game. i was at a game last week where they played a audio clip during a pitch. can't say if batter was destracted or not but again, why?

also, i can only speak for our school, but the PA guy protects his territory. no way someone else can "help".
And I can only speak for Plano East -- WHO WANTS THE JOB??? Smile I agree with a number of your points -- it's not about the announcing -- I've learned that over the years. But, many of the people there want to hear the introductions....they don't know all of the kids....especially the opponents. And our players like "walk-up" songs....although we have never been very good at the timing (the dugout is too close to the plate).

In any event, I think announcing can add to the game experience if handled properly.

Yes, the PE announcer has been obnoxious too....in the past.
ok, I have waited long enough. I have to agree with PD on who wants the job.

However, on the other hand, how in the world can this be relative to what's going on, on the field. It is a spectator sport and as usual everyone has an opinion on the topic. but when it comes down to it, isn't complaining about the PA guy a cover up for a deficiency in another area. Like maybe your team isn't winning or your mad at your spouse, maybe you burnt supper?

You've got to be kidding. Going after the PA guy....and his audio clips. Try going down the right field line and enjoying the game with those guys you see down there. Most of the time they aren't jacking their jaw, they are just watching the game and enjoying it out of earshot from the PA guy. Of course that is in by no way meant to be a shot at the beloved PA guy…….but it is an alternative. If everyone got out of the stands who would he have to perform for????

Chastising the PA guy………”now that’s funny”
JAFO...

Nope. I didn't burn dinner. I do take out during baseball season (first things first). Not particularly mad at the spouse -- should I be? Guess I didn't realize that the right field guys were the "good guys", but you can be guaranteed that I will head that way the next game to check it out.

The point is... and continues to be... that there is a time and place for everything. AND, there are UIL rules in place... for a reason. After 15+ years of rec ball/select ball/varsity ball, I'm not that thin-skinned anymore. THAT SAID... I can definitely tell the difference between a class act PA guy (like most are) and a PA guy that gets his own kicks out of heckling from a'far.

I understand what Screwball is saying, we were at a tournament at an Arlington School this past weekend where the PA announcer was over the line playing drops several times. This was not a game our High School participated in. After a high school player strikes out, he does not need to hear it over the PA, he knows he just failed. Keep the drops positive and stay away from the negative ****.
If you have been to a game where the PA is being misused then you will understand where momandcpa is coming from.

A couple of years ago I started a similar thread on this very topic after returning from a game with one of our biggest rivals. My ears were ringing from the loud music and I was outraged that they played music up until the moment the pitcher was ready to release the ball (of course only when it was our guys out on the field). They played sound bits that would make you go crazy. To be honest it made a great game a very unenjoyable game. Mad

We have been back to that school now for several years and they are no longer operating in this manner Big Grin and the game is a much more enjoyable experience. The PA now COMPLIMENTS the game it doesn't take over the game so I appauld the UIL for having a guideline and I appreciate those schools that have the class to use their PA's in the appropiate way.

Bottom line if you walk away from a game and all you can remember about the experience is the PA then either

1. it wasn't a very good game and the PA guy was enjoyable.

or

2. the PA was overpowering and it ruined a great game/experience.

Maybe some Insight from a player would clear some of this up...

I'll admit, some of the "drops" are very annoying/ degrading, "swing and a miss" for example, but the music is part of the game.

Players from High school to the majors are announced with their, "walk-up song", these songs are used to help pump up the player, and everyone on our team begged for one this year.I think that when you go to a game you should expect the music and the occasional noises with a foul ball, but I don't think some of the drops are particularly appropriate.

Razz That's one for our side! Big Grin

That's the point of the whole PA system discussion... whether it is appropriate or not. Whether it abides by UIL rules. Whether it shows class.

FWIW ... UP until THIS YEAR, I had never witnessed an inappropriate PA announcer!

Just think people by this time tomorrow, we can be discussing district game results. (I hope)

PD,

Didn't fall into it, just being sarcastic. Sometimes i don't have much patience. I am working on it though.

By the way, i know the sound systems vary by field, but even if i were on the right field line i can hear the PA system.

The clips that upset me the other night were played against the other team and we were up big time. Oh yea, I didn't burn dinner and i wasn't upset with the spouse. I just respect the game and the kids playing it.

Also, i know the boys like the music, both between innings and as they come to bat. I enjoy getting an idea of what the kids like in the way of music as well. However, for these kids who work so hard in class, private lessons, practices, games, etc to be insulted by "some" PA guys who have probably never played a game in their life just upsets me.

Wha wa wa...........Thicken the skin a little. Have you ever heard of home field advantage?

Use it, love it, enjoy it! Parents and their over protection of little Johnny and his feelings. In the real world, life will provide so much more than a sound bite at the inappropriate time. The velveteen carpet is not out in the real world. Do you really want to turn them lose in the imaginary world of make believe?

Could this be an indictment of our entire parental institution? Shelter our children from all the evil in the world and then turn them lose in the real world where they can't cope with the slightest adversity.

I put it to you screwball! Isn't this really an indictment of their constitutional rights?
No, no, no, no. I think personally (to relate this to another thread) that PA guys loosen up the game. While playing a team, the PA guy began to sing (or do his best attempt to sing) Fergalicious (I apologize for any mispellings of the word). Now I want everyone to go listen to that song, and imagine a 30+ year old male trying to... sing (say) those words with the tune playing. Provided plenty of heckling material. There really is no point to this post... (mine).

give me a break! sorry, guess i shouldn't have asked you to "give" me anything!

hey screwy, i evidently forgot the tounge in cheek moniker. Far be it for me to pass judgement on parenting skills. I still don't have that one figured out.

And if you can't tell it was a joke by the comment of

then you need to take two steps away from the edge of that cliff, because you are way to close for that comment. crazy
