We have a 90mph pitcher on our team. He says he throws "nearly" 90. His Dad say his kid can hit the "low 90s." His instructor supposedly gunned him at "about 90."
Only problem is that when a gun shows up at a game, he NEVER goes above 81.
Yet, I don't think any of them are liars. Mostly it's a matter of "creative rounding."
Presence of scouts will give you an indication if he is "truly" cruising at 90.
If its dad's gun, it likely is about 5 mph faster than the rest of the world.

I coached a kid once whose Dad said he threw 88-90. (They were a move in from another portion of the country.) Well, any scout that gunned him said 82-84. Then, one day, it happened 86 on a scout's gun. I was happy for this young man. Problem - Dad told the scout that his gun MUST be wrong AND his son wasn't even throwing good that day... They moved back to where they came from! Guess it was the weather or something. LOL!!!
My "ACE" has hit 86 once. Ironically also on a scout's gun. Typically throws 83-84. My #2 may break 80 with 100mph winds behind him. My #3, #4, #5 couldn't break a pane of glass if they were 4 feet away from it. However, they compete and do well. I've always been told that the "Average Speed" is not that great because "average" includes all teams and many teams don't have anyone that can break 80.
