Why not have this tournament in Texas, as half (or over half) of the teams are from Texas? Is this still being put on by the Firebirds organization out of AZ?

This game was completely dominated by D-Bat. Those boys looked like they were on a mission to beat the Yankees pretty bad since they smoked them in the Regional Qualifier.

The 2010 AZ Connie Mack World Series Qualifier is in full swing, and the Arizona teams have represented very well to this point. This is probably the best opportunity to see some of the nation's top players in an event where they actually compete rather than "showcase".

3 AZ clubs made the ten team championship bracket: Arizona Firebirds (4-0 in pool play) Angels Red (4-0) and Angels White (3-0-1).

Bracket play began last night with the Firebirds downing the Dallas Patriots behind a great mound performance from Jake Winters. BOth Angelsteams lost the first round game and will face off this morning in an elimination tilt.

The team to beat is still probably the DBat Mustangs from Dallas, who feature two arms who look to go in the 1st round of the 2011 draft: Dylan Bundy and Archie Bradley, both from Oklahoma.

Owasso pitcher Dylan Bundy texted the Tulsa World on Wednesday night to announce that he had given a verbal commitment to play baseball at the University of Texas following his high school graduation in 2011.

The hard-throwing right-hander, who was the 2010 Tulsa World All-Metro Pitcher of the Year, compiled an 11-1 record with a 1.58 earned run average and 164 strikeouts in 79 2/3 innings in his first year in the Class 6A program.

When not on the mound, Bundy played third base, boasting a .442 batting average with seven home runs and 58 RBIs. He was tied for team honors in hits (57) and runs scored (50) and led the Rams in doubles (16).

Bundy texted the message, “Hey, I just committed to Texas” as he prepared to pitch in a game late Wednesday.

Asked to confirm, Bundy texted, “Yes maam. I gotta go. I’m about to warm (up).”

Bundy is considered one of the top national prospects for the 2011 Amateur Baseball Draft.

“I’m happy for Dylan,” Owasso coach Larry Turner said. “We’ve never had a player sign with Texas. They are a first-class program. Dylan ranks third or fourth among the top prospects in the country coming out next year. He’ll make (Texas) a great player if he indeed ends up playing there.”

Bundy has earned Tulsa World pitcher of the year honors in his sophomore and junior seasons. He is a three-time Tulsa World first-team honoree. In two seasons at Sperry, Bundy compiled a 22-2 record.

Bundy’s older brother Bobby signed out of high school with the Baltimore Orioles in 2008.

Respect to the Dallas Tigers for making it this far...They are not in the BBI or the LSBL? Who are these guys? They are not the Gatorade, Powerade, and Kool-Aid All Americans of a year ago...

We know about the NY Yankees, The DBRAT Mustangs, TCL's Frozen Ropes and the DPATS, but who are these "secretive" Tigers...

Congrats... Tigers... I have wondered why some of these Dallas teams spend the money and go there to go 0-4 or 1-3. Pretty expensive little trip. better off staying here and playing in a USSSA tournament.

Talked to one of the parents here siad Tigers were most 17s with 3 or 4 15s helping out. Biggest hitter this week was a kid that Amrine CUT at FM. Watched end of Trombly game and kids can play. came back from down 7 to lose by 1. guess tommys been hiding them.

It was a long week of baseball and the last few days were pretty exciting. If you were there today you saw 2 very good games. Our guys battled all week long and finished the week 9-2. We played 11 games in 6 days in 110 degree weather and battled our butts off from the 1st pitch to the last. Even though we came up just short of winning this tournament and getting back to the Connie Mack World Series I am very proud of the way our guys played.

The D-Bat Mustangs are a very talented team and they finished the week 8-1-1. It's too bad one of us had to lose today, but these guys have a good team and they played well all week and earned the spot in '10 CMWS. Hopefully we can win our State Tournament and Regional and join you guys there!

Steve thanks for the kind words. I remember first meeting you when as a 15 year old team we qualified for the MMWS and even though you were the older team you treated us with respect, we have never forgot that meeting. Our teams have competed together in national tournaments over the years and the games have always been very tough and played how the game should be played, very professional without the trash talking, just very good baseball. Good luck to you and your team the rest of the summer and we hope to see you there as well.

First off, I hope your travels were safe and your getting some much needed rest. You are one of the few that can really understand how physically and mentally draining the Phoenix Qualifier can be.

Second, congratulations to your ball club. I know you hoped for more but you can be proud of how your bunch played. I would like to commend your kids on on they went about their business with respect and class. It was refreshing to play an organization with no side acts...just straight up hard ball. Trombly baseball is alive and well.

Last, I really enjoyed our conversations this week. I can tell you are a guy that "get's it" when it comes to what is really important in coaching amateur baseball players.

In my opinion, there was no loser in yesterdays contests. Both teams battled for every strike, ball, hit, walk, etc. As you know, one bloop or bad hop could have turned the table in the whole outcome.

Thanks again Steve for providing a class act organization for amatuer players to be a part of.

There is nothing I can write on this site that will express the emotions that a team went through last week in Phoenix.

I sit here this morning at my office desk still trying to grasp what just happened last week.

I do know this...19 players will get to experience one of the greatest baseball venues (pro or amatuer) in August.

19 players scratched and clawed from the first pitch on Tuesday to the last pitch on Sunday.

19 players played 17 games in 11 days including the Regional Qualifier along with the World Series Qualifier.

19 young men decided to survive as a team rather than die as individuals.

I've never been more pleased with a group of young men. What they accomplished was solely based on their efforts to stick with a plan even when adversity faced them.

In my opinion, the Phoenix Qualifier is the most difficult tournament in the country to win. The conditions itself lend an ultimate challenge. The competition is as good as it gets and the week long marathon is down right brutal.

I've got the best coaching staff, the best group of parents, and a supporting staff that is unmatched.

I can't wait to see the faces on these kids when the police escort leads them into Farmington!

I'm planning on bringing my son in uniform to partake in the opening ceremonies and the parade.

When it's all said and done, it ain't about championships for me though. It's about helping in the process of making men.

This week, 19 young men experienced something very special that few get to experience...

Accomplishing a common goal together within a team atmosphere.

Congratulations boys... I'm proud to be part of your accomplishment.

Who were the lucky and talented 15's to help out the 17's?

Congratulations to the Trombly Braves and, most especially, to the DBat Mustangs. Both were very, very tough and deserving of the championship battle. Congratulations, too, to all of the teams in the Qualifier. It was indeed grueling, fun, a great experience and a true privilege to compete against so many outstanding ballclubs.

I see a ridiculous amount of amateur baseball every year, in excess of 200 games at the 16-18 age group.
The pair of Sunday games was as good as it gets.
Congrats to both teams. If you aren't out there witnessing it all week it's impossible to understand what a test of wills this tourney is.
It has great competition, brutal conditions, and the ultimate carrot at the end of the stick.

While I felt terrible for Steve Trombly, whose club battled like a mother all week, I'm happy as hell for Ken Guthrey. We had a chance to get to know each other this week and we share a lot of opinions on the state of amateur baseball in this country.

Also, I've never met anyone who could go 0-10 in coin flips.

On Sunday, despite my only motivation being to go home to some A/C after 6 grueling 13 hour days in the sun, even I was nervous as hell.

Thanks to all the teams for being class acts and congrats to the DBAT Mustangs for the win. A great group of young men who carried themselves like champions all week.

The AGS has been defeated by the hated Guthrie...DPATS, DTIGS, NYYANKS, didnt help me bring down you and the DBRATS...

It makes me proud as hell when an outsider, who is as involved in the game as much as you, acknowledges the character and perception these kids show. Wins and losses is how most measure a group, but when one comments on demeanor...it makes me feel like I'm helping do something right.

This tournament coincides with 16U USAB West Championships so now looking forward to participate
