This afternoon JP's varsity team plays its first scrimmage of the year. Weather's not too bad here in DFW: mid-40s, light wind.

Here's to another season for all our boys: The crack of the bat, the diving plays, the game-ending strikeouts ... and oh, yes: even the rough spells.

But most of all, here's to the memories we're making together.

Houston area and just getting started in the journey.  My 6th grade son tries out for the 7th grade team today.  First of 16 games is next week. Small private school.  His club team just had tryouts a couple weeks ago and this week is first full (3-practice) week.  First tournament is in DFW in a month.  Last basketball regular season game is tonight, then playoffs.  Feb is a busy month.  He pitches and I'm worried about managing innings/bullpens, etc.

On the road to scrimmage in Mansfield,TX tonight. My son's senior year.

In August, he's headed off to Missouri to pitch in college.

Reflecting on 15 springs of the great game and how my son got here.

Going to savor every moment this spring and summer before the nest is

empty, then get used to a 5.5 hour drive to watch him throw in college.

Which Mansfield school? My two play for Mansfield Summit.

My oldest is off to Oklahoma Wesleyan as a catcher. Looking forward to this senior season!

Our V team is playing a tune up game tonight, and another tomorrow.  We have an alumni game (new event this year) on Saturday, then the real games start on Monday for V and Wednesday for JV.

My 2017 is finally getting over tendonitis, and is chomping at the bit to get on the mound. He hasn't been allowed to throw at practices yet, so he has spent a good portion of practice time fixing up the bullpen mounds and re-tying nets.

Wow, you guys have it made.  Here in Ohio we've got 6-7" of snow on the ground....and another 8-10" coming tonight.  "Official" practice doesn't start until Feb.24th with first game April 1.  Last year practice started on Feb 25th....first game was on Monday April 1st. The first day we were able to get on the field was Saturday March 30th....2 days before the first game....and it's not looking much better this year.  I keep asking my son if he'd like to "look south" for college....but so far he's planning on staying here in the good old Midwest...though I have no idea why....lol

We had our pre-season game this afternoon In Orlando. It was great to watch son play again after missing last season. What an opener... We played against a very good team with the number1 player in the country, Nick Gordon. There were about 20 scouts there for a pre-season game. Unfortunately for Nick, our pitching is not very deep so didn't get to show his offense. Son went 1-3 and they play again tomorrow. Season starts next week. By the way, it was86 degrees. my pitcher in Cleveland can't wait to play down here in another month. He may actually see a baseball field.

Was this the Waimea tournament?  How was it? We saw one of the teams at the airport when we were coming home from the Maui tournament but were too tired to stop and chat.

Yes it was tho waimea tournament. Unfortunately the weather was not cooperative for the 3days. Still a good time though

It's opening night for the JV team. 6:30 game under the lights.  Our only night game though -The rest of the season is nothing but Saturday doubleheaders.

My son is coming off of a bout of tendonitis, so he's not really back to 100%.  The word he was given is that he will either come out of the bullpen tonight, or start one of the games on Saturday.

Our varsity team opened up with a 24-0 victory on Monday night. They were going station to station by the 2nd inning, but they put up 25 hits so there wasn't much that could be done about it. Opposing team only made 1 error too.  Their pitchers really just couldn't keep the ball away from the bat.

Middle School, but.....1st game tonight.  Son gets the start. He's a 6th grader.  First time he rides the bus from the school to the away fields with his teammates and coach.  I think I am starting to get what you guys mean when you say "school ball is special".  The sun is shining brightly in Houston today!

school ball is definitely special.

Unlike travel ball at an older age (16U and up) which is about individual acchievements, school ball is about the team. In travel ball, the only people that care how a team is playing or even watch is parents players and coaches.

In school ball, you get to play with who you grow up with. In school ball it is more community. It is not unusual to have many my sons friends at HS game, It is not unusual to have dads with thier young sons there, watching and learning. At least in my community, the HS players are looked up at with stars in their eyes by young kids. Pictures with them happens most every game (this is post game). It is about community pride, HS pride, pride for team above self. It is MUCH more pure of a game than travel ball in my opinion. It is about the game- us versus them.

Very exciting! Good luck to him this season. Enjoy the ride the next 7 years.

Thursday was last scrimmage. 2015 started and threw 4 innings. No runs,no hits, one walk, Opposing pitcher who's committed to TCU hit him on inside throwing elbow in 2nd inning. Still pitched two more innings. Swelling has subsided but still a little sore. Hope it is fine by Monday. He's supposed to pitch @ Minute Maid Park on Monday evening. 1st game of year. Team and parents are looking forward to it.

This week my son found out that he will be starting the season at third base.  My son has been a starter on varsity as a catcher since he was in the eighth grade and is now a senior.  My son had an accident in October that could have ended his baseball playing days, so it was an excellent surprise to find out that our son will need a new infielders glove!

In years past, I took high school baseball for granted.  While I enjoyed watching my son and his teamates play, I was always really waiting for summer ball to come and the serious competition to begin.  This year I am going to appreciate every minute of my son's last season of high school baseball.  I am thankful that my son will get to wear the team uniform and represent his high school one last season.

I hear you 2014Prospect.

I thought my son was not going to throw today at Flower Mound TX Jaguars. It's their last scrimmage before tournaments begin this Thursday and Mj8 Jr is scheduled to start first Thursday game on the bump. Today I've cleared the work schedule to attend this Thursday but I just found out he'll throw one inning today! Yeah, it's just one inning to get the pre-tournament work in AND I've got conflicts today, but I'm going to figure out a way. I'll be there  It's his senior year, I'm not missing anything

My son got to pitch in his first varsity experience the last 3 scrimmages for one inning each game.  He is bit erratic but it was nice to see that his velocity was the same as most other pitchers (~75 mph).

I just built a portable pitchers mound for the backyard so I can work with him on increasing speed using video and my new radar gun.  His personal pitching instructor will be Nolan Ryan.

He also got to catch a few innings each scrimmage and threw out his first runner.

He will need to work on a quicker rotation and pitch selection when batting.

2015 Son just got his 1st start of the season and it was a good one. he was suppose to start a week ago for our 1st regular season game, away, but it got canceled because of a broken pipe and the field was flooded. They reschedule for a week later and he gets the start so his coach could keep the same rotation. He throws 7 innings of no hit baseball for the win. What a game. Proud parents.

Well my 2017 lefty, he is on freshmen team. got the call last night to start the first scrimmage of the year for the JV team. he went two innings gave up one hit up the middle, no runs, no walks, with 2 K's. coach told me after the scrimmage, the reason they pulled him they had seen enough and wanted to see a few other pitchers. he threw 24 pitches barely enough to get started. can't wait for the season to kickoff March 1st
