Your thoughts?

----Bethel University, located in McKenzie, Tennessee, recently announced the formation of a bass team created under the direction of Garry Mason who serves as the team's coach.

As with other team sports such as football, baseball and basketball, students are recruited and provided athletic scholarships when they sign with the University as members of the bass team.----

It appears they haven't altered the basketball recruiting sheet unless I'm missing something and there's a field goal shooting percentage in fishing. Wouldn't strong wrists be important for casting? How do they develop strong wrists? Twelve ounce curls?

Ah come on guys. What's the big deal? Wofford College has a BB gun (okay shooting) team. Of course, I think that's a Title IX deal. I'm just waiting for the Swedish bikini team.

I'm all for fishing and all for bass clubs at colleges --- I just don't get the scholarship angle. I used to fish competitive tournaments but I have always seen fishing as a hobby just like hunting, geocaching, surfing, skateboarding, motocross, skydiving, stamp collecting etc..

Those that criticize baseball for eliminating those not financially able to go the "showcase/select team route and being unable to get a college scholarship because of that, must not be aware of what it cost to own and operate a bass boat, tournament fees, tackle etc.
Fungo the fisherman
If this had been available when my son was going to school, there's no doubt where he'd have gone. When he walked away from baseball a bit over a year ago, his comment to me was "Dad, I'm going fishing." Now, he's working as a deckhand on a long range sport fishing boat in San Diego, and they go as far as 1,000 miles to the south. Last trip, they caught 12 tuna that weighed over 200 pounds each.

He'd have been all over this fishing opportunity, even though they're guppies compared to what he fishes for these days.

dot dot dot - that is pretty funny Big Grin

Not sure you are aware of it ... but we have some serious punsters here on the hsbbweb led by Woodrow himself gotwood4sale.

I am pretty sure they work pretty hard to "lure" their recruits in. I have heard that during recruiting that they "cast" a pretty wide "net."

What say you Woody? Big Grin
You can joke all you want but Competitive Bass Fishing has been a college sport for a number of years---they have championships every year---google up NCAA BASS CHAMPIONSHIPS and you will be quite surprised

Since Fungo and I both fished professionally we are ineligible, sorry to say

I would think we could put a pretty competive team on the water just with those of us here on this site
There are many college sports.

The NCAA Surfing rankings

1 – Arizona State
2 - Washington
3 – James Madison
4 – Alvernia
5 – Utah
6 – U Conn
7 – Dine College
8 – Colby
9 – USC
10 – Michigan Tech

Womens Surfing
1 – Columbia
2 – CMS
3 – Yale
4 – California
5 – Texas A&M
6 – Washington
7 – U Conn
8 – James Madison
9 – Humbolt State
10 – Depaul

My question… Where do some of these colleges practice surfing? Alvernia is in Reading PA, Texas A&M have some big waves around there? How about riding those waves in Utah?

To quote Steve Garvey at spring training with the Padres in Arizona after years at Vero Beach, FL when asked if he missed the beach ....

There's plenty of beach in Arizona. Just no ocean.

Are there HS Varsity and JV fishing teams?

The Illinois High School Association started Bass Fishing last year... as far as I know, the only state to have it at the high school level so far...

I had dinner with Dave Gannaway of IHSA shortly after Illinois decided to add bass fishing as an interscholastic sport. He said that as an avid fisherman and the administrator who was in charge of selecting tournament sites he was going to love the addition.
I don't know about you guys but I yearn for the old days when the fishermen used "wood" poles and boats!! None of this dangerous fiberglass or aluminum that they use today!!

PB can sponser the WWBFA Championship out of Jupiter florida in October!!

That would of course be the World Wood Boat Fishing Association sponsored by Perfect B.A.S.S.
