It's a great story about her overcoming a disability, but no way was Batista slamming her-he could just as easily have said Miss New Jersey or Miss Nevada. He meant expecting one thing and getting another.

Check this out:

"On September 2 2009 Batista was nominated for the Roberto Clemente Award. He was nominated because in the off-season he traveled throughout the United States and Latin America to deliver baseball equipment, medical supplies, and speak to kids of all ages to stress the importance of education and determination. Batista said this about being nominated for helping the less fortunate:
“I have been to so many countries and seen the reactions of so many kids when you do something for them, I think it's the most gratifying thing we can do. It would be a great honor for anything, but especially satisfying for a Latino player. I remember talking to [Albert] Pujols about it. He won it last year and we agreed that it probably means more to us than other people because of who Roberto Clemente was. There have been a lot of great Latin players, but no one did what he did.

p.s. Did I just agree with T.R.?? Eek

Hokie

Many do agree with me but they do not want to admit it !

What gets me with news items like this, and this is not a knock at PG and Iowa , is that there are multitudes of cases like this in our country that go unrecognized

Additionally a multitude of pro athletes work their tails off to help the underpriviledged in their countries--they are to be commended and this included our USA resident players---they all do more than what we will ever know

TR,

Why the argument? I could care less what Batista said. Actually it gives everyone something to talk about and it's kind of comical. I think it's great that he was nominated for the Roberto Clemente award.

The girl in the link was not even this year's Miss Iowa, but anyone who watches the video on that link should like her and for that matter, like the state of Iowa for awarding her.

Here is the link again, there's nothing to argue about hereFormer Miss Iowa with Cerebral Palsey.
Well, if as PG indicated, he only wanted to make this about the story of this particular Miss Iowa, I accept that at face value and misread and misunderstood his words and his intent in looping in Batista and the baseball connection.
As a stand alone, the Miss Iowa story is a great one.
As a stand alone, what hokieone posted about Bautista is great. You don't do much better than the Clemente award.
So maybe now this thread can be about Miss Iowa, Batista and not TR and who does or does not agree with him. Roll Eyes
quote:
infielddad I do not think you could make it Brooklyn

Guess that sounds like someone looking for an argument to me. Not sure what else it could possibly mean.

This is a great story about a woman from Iowa. Actually I wasn't even aware of her, but Batista's comment made me search for Miss Iowa's and there she was. I was just curious as to how they looked and I found this youtube link. I'm glad that Miguel Batista brought it up or I might not have ever known about Abbey Curran.
Actually as an innocent bystander who stumbled upon the thread, I don't think TRhit's beef is with PGSTAFF as PG was just pointing out the woman's story, his beef should be with Infielddad who played the "PC police" card on TRhit. Now mind you there are certainly times when TR adds to his collection of "PC police" cards with his comments but in this instance he was just pointing out that the player was using an analogy as most people would not associate Miss Iowa with Miss America. Batista easily could have used any state from the north or northeast like my fine state of NH and his point would have been taken. Most Miss America's come from the southern states or California (where the stereotype is all their woman are drop dead gorgeous...like Ginger vs Mary Ann on Gilligan's Island) If you get upset about that well then you are looking for reasons to get bent out of shape in my opinion.

Or just looking to jab TRhit..lol

Trhit's "you'd never make it in Brooklyn" comment means that you need to have thick skin to live there as being overly sensitive to every little comment would make your life a living hell..another analogy if you will.
