Billy,
Obviously, these people don't understand that you only coach so that you can go on a free vacation each summer! Where to this year?
Infield man- you are right, he does not need to explain himself to anybody, because there are no rules for Rec Ball, right Billy????
Redbird- Is that the same Morrison kid that played at Salem Middle School last year? UHM!
Remember parents, Fall Ball is not always an indicator for the spring. Sometimes players show up out of the woodwork to play in the spring.
Anyone who knows anything about PONY Palomino baseball realizes what it takes to compete on a national level. Try attending a Zone or World Series tourney and you will see what the hell "recruitment" is all about. If you only knew what Billy is up against each and every season, just to get the kids committed locally to what he is trying to do. Then to take that extra step and have them go up against the teams that they face on the regional, then national level, only then could you appreciate what this guy does. Throw in the shoestring he has to operate with and only then can you realize what an accomplishment it is. The fact that Billy and PoDunk Lynnhaven continue to take teams to the heights they do only solidifies the case for the talent level in this area as well as his ability. Don't get me started on the battles we have been up against.

Dang, wasn't this thread about the Beach District?
Billy does a great job, trust me, there are PLENTY of players NO ONE has heard of. AAU, Showcase, travel teams, they just make a PARENT feel good. Spring brings out the best players. FC is LOADED, as is COX and a few other teams. No need to play for Richmond BRAVES or others. I'll tell you this, Soup, Younce, Sinnan, Anderson, Tim Smith, have all done a great job with the current players, but there are other players, you'll see, P.A is loaded too, Rec ball isn;t bad if you have the right coaches,
Billy,

Thank god Sam finally came in to speak up for you and Lynnhaven. Always great discussing these "funnies" with you.
Your team offers a great outlet for these kids to come out and have fun. Takes them back to just playing baseball games because they like to play.
Sam even told me that he is going to purchase you a great uniform to wear!

Well grasscutter, you want to get back to beach baseball, What exactly are your predictions? Maybe you know who all the starters are for these teams. Come on give us your insight.
Well, not having seen any HS fall baseball at all, I can only go on what I remember from last spring. And I think the usual suspects will be there banging each other.

Preseason district pick: FC. But Coach Stubbe better not let the players take anyone for granted.

Difulgo will obviously get all of the top games on the bump for Kellam so those will be grind it out games. And Kellam will be right there. I'm really anxious to see how the young guns contribute.

Let those two leave a door open and Cox will waltz right in. Wish I could throw PA into the mix but I just don't think they will score enough runs (again). But you never know as Tomchik and Lemaster will get their big games and keep them close.

How's that '43? Agree?
Bbmom, ask Coach Jones because he knows who will play SS and 2B.

43, yes. It's Ian's boy.

ODU, while I agree that there are solid players coming from rec ball, the fact is more come from a higher level such as travel. And, as for showcase being a way to make the parents feel good, that is not accurate. The level of competition is much higher. Facing that competition 60 times per summer, makes for a better player. How many sophomores do you know who have faced 85+mph fastballs? You dont get that experience by playing 20 HS games per year.
Grasscutter,
Your input is kind of shallow. Have to agree that Difulgo from Kellam should be #1 pitcher in the beach. I also like that Big Kid from FC, think his name is Bohman?? Wish Stubbe would have pitched him more last year, we'll see where he is in the rotation this year.
I know there were a couple of players that left Landstown, he has a couple of quality guys, but not sure if there is enough over there to win games. It's a shame because that school certainly has athletes in it. And the coach has more personal baseball experience than any other coach in the beach.
Have to say I would be really surprised if there are any freshmen out there to take the SS position as a starter. There is a huge difference between a 14 yr old and an 18 yr old. Just haven't seen any freshmen out there with enough arm strength to play SS.
Hope you're wrong about PA's hitting, you know they have the best 2nd baseball that ODU has ever had helping coach.
Ocean Lakes has a couple of guys that can hit the ball. Maybe Speddan will let them hit away instead of having to bunt!!!!
Looking forward to a great season!
By the way, have you looked at the recruiting class for ODU, looks pretty good.

Lynn Metheny
According to the ODU program Wasinger was all ECAC South in 81 and 82, then drafted in 1982 in the 3rd round with the Padres.
Wiley was All Sun Belt 85, 86, 87, then drafted in the 5th round in 87.
This all was way before my time, so just going by what I read.
Sorry got off track again Grasscutter!
By the way, I think that Kellam will take the whole district and continue onto regions with First Colonial giving them a run for their money!

It's probably fodder for another thread, but I guess the obvious next question is, while the Beach be competitive in the Region and States?

Is the question will the beach be competative ?

FC: Possibly
Everyone else: no chance
To all the ODU fans, Mark Wasinger is my best friend, he was an all american in 82, signed 3rd round with Padres, went on and played for Giants in 85 when Robbie Thomson got hurt, now he is in front Office with Redsox as director of special assignments. He was that good, he was 6 foot 160 pounds, good power, and 6.6 guy. He was Padres minor league player of year in 84. I also played with Tony Morris, ODU Hall of Fame, never got drafted, best right fielder in ODU History. All beach teams have an ACE, but F.C has got Rabbits, and Pitching and Power, but, other teams are close too. Its going to be a great Year at the Beach.

You sound pretty confident about FC, I have yet to see anything to prove they are "head and shoulders" better than everyone in the beach. I certainly think there are some teams that have just as much "a chance" as First Colonial. It will be more competitive than you think. Hasnt FC lost to Kellam the past two years? Just a thought, lets not write the other teams off just yet. As of right now everyone has a chance...
Actually, I think the top four teams in the beach will be very competitive, with those four teams being:

Kellam
FC
Cox
Ocean Lakes

There will be a few upsets as always, because on any given day in baseball, the best team doesn't always win.

Three of the above teams have a shut down pitcher and could compete with any team on a one game basis. And the other team used a pitcher in the regional's last year that stopped the #1 team in the nation.

Billy looks like you have a pretty good handle on these teams. Especially since you had quite a few member of the OL team playing for you this past summer.

Personally I am curious as to how FC is going to replace losing Blake Boyce to graduation. That leaves a huge hole in their offense and of course catching..
Agree with the warrior on Kellam, Fc, in that order, but think that PA will be in the mix with Cox and OL. After that, there may be a win or two with the bottom. But remember, this wonderful district takes 8 of 11 to the tournament. It would be alot more interesting if it were only 6.
ODU baseball, not sure who you are, but Druz is still my favorite infielder of all time. Perhaps just because he continues to support the program. Are you a parent of a new player at FC?

Landstown has Sandifer who cruises at around 84
Hurrell in my mind would be number 2 & he can be pretty good on the mound when he is on his game . Langejans would probably come after that as a pretty decent number 3 , but after that comes the issue . Landstown's pitching next to Curry last year was pretty shaky at some points in time & when you got deep into their rotation they couldnt score enough points to equal out the amount they gave up . What I do like about landstown this year is that they should have some pretty good hitters throughout their lineup .

& your right hasbeen007 , I shouldnt have written off everyone else so swiftly . Kellam might have just as good a chance in the district & regional tournaments , I just wonder how the beach teams will stack up against the other districts .
I don't think anyone said FC is head and shoulders above anyone, I think the Beach has 6 teams capable of winning the district, Just about everyteam has an ace, and Bayside will surprize people, Kane, King, Snyder, thats a good 3, 4 , 5 hitters on any team. I just think after watching summer ball, that FC has players stepping into to fill the voids they lost to Graduation, and With Costen, Cook, Lawson, Bowman, Parker, Stallard, and others, they are just as deep, but Cox is tough with the new kid, and PA with coach Hunt is always good, again, its going to be a battle.
