Beach District Preseason Predictions

everyones thoughts?
mine are-

1.FC - too much strength overall with Costen, Cook, Lawson, & Bowman
2.Kellam - With the 3 big seniors Difulgo, Harrington & Kilmon leading the squad if they are to make a push, this would be the year.
3.PA - Tomchick, Lemaster & Pitt should keep them contending.
4.Cox - Lost alot last year but still have Kyriacou, so they should be fine
5.Landstown - How good they are this year depends heavily on the pitching staff and the performance of Cameron Day & the upperclassmen
6.Ocean Lakes - Not alot of stars, but the pitching is decent helped by Morimando
7.Salem - Led by a load of experience with their seniors & juniors, they should be back in the playoffs this year.
8.Kempville - Zach Smith barely etching them into the playoffs.
9.Tallwood - Topping wont be enough to get them in there this season
10.Bayside - Keep your eye on Tommy Kaine
11.Green Run - The stallions are going to need alot of help with pitching before they can go any further.

Saipan- You do keep up with things don't you? The cupboard at Cox is far from bare. Some of those that have waited patiently for their turn have made great strides in the offseason... and they may have a few surprises in the lineup as well. Smile

Let me guess, some of the wrestlers transferring from Grassfield play baseball too Smile!!!

Grayson Bailey?... I think...and the spelling could be off.

As for wrestlers and baseball, there have been a few. My son was a MS champ before giving it up to focus on bb in HS. It really has nothing to do with the skills not transferring. It has more to do with the fact that these days, unless you are truly blessed athletically, you almost need to focus on a sport year 'round in order to be really successful

Well maybe those transfers will not make an immediate impact, but in a year or two, the difference could be substantial.

Let's see: a wrestler that also played baseball in high school????? The first one that would come to mind in the beach would be a Kellam kid by the last name of Sinnen!!!!(he also played football) Come on Redbird, I expect more of you!

Besides Turner, a couple other Beach District wrestler/baseball players are Kyle Robertson (OL) and Buddy Lawson (FC). Kempsville's Ryan Midgette (2009) also did both, as did Ben Dickerson and Derek Trueblood from OL and Scott Mania (Salem/Cox) a few years back. I'm sure there are others.

As a side note, Neil Ramirez's older brother was a state champion wrestler for the Chiefs (his father also wrestled for Kempsville)...obviously Neil chose the more lucrative path Smile

Wrestling takes a kind of dedication not required in many other sports. I am not knocking those sports, but one has to be sort of "crazy" to wrestle! My brother and I, both pitchers, were state qualifiers in wrestling in the mid 90s. We quit our senior years (after being offered scholarships for baseball) to allow our bodies to get back to "normal" since most wrestlers need to cut weight to compete at a high level, and that is not consistent with a baseball body, especially for pitchers. I will say, however, that NOTHING could have given me the mental toughness on the mound that wrestling provided. I was not a "gifted" athlete, per se. Two cents.

Killian Strenn has also returned to Ocean Lakes from Wisconsin. Saw him play this fall and he seems to have gotten stronger and could help solidify their defense.

I agree Tommy Kane from Bayside is a definite plus in that program. Coming off second team all beach last year as a dh, along with honarable mention player Casey King, these 2 players should be well respected dispite the fact they are both juniors.

Do not sleep on Tallwood either. Taylor Topping is an excellent player, but they have a pitching staff and a group of hungry ball players. Clay Rakshaw(sp) Erik Chandler, Antonio Telez and Christian Avila should help this team make it to the playoffs.

I agree, people shoudnt sleep on Landstown. Losing Curry will definately hurt their staff. He threw a lot of innings for them lastyear. Sandifer has a live arm, if he can get his off-speed pitches over for strikes he will be a tough pitcher to beat. Looking forward to a competitive season in the Beach. I dont think there is a clear cut #1. Arguments can be made for Cox, Kellam and FC. Not hearing too much about OL. How are they looking? I know they have their MI returning who I think were all-beach. The only pitcher on their staff that I've heard about is Morimando, they have anyone else? Having heard much about PA either, I know coach Hunt will put together a competitive team. Just wondering what he's working with...

My thought on Landstown is that Sandifer & Hurrell on the mound alone wont be enough. Colton Langejans, a senior should also get substantial time on the mound. & there was a freshman last year I remember seeing for Landstown, William Hinton, his bat showed some pop & he has good speed.

Princess Anne always has players year in & out; some who you may not have heard of though. Coach Hunt will make the best with what he has.

I thoght cox had a senior catcher Dennis. I saw Jeff Bay throw and his arm is extremely strong, but have never seen him behind the plate defensively.

Good question about th pop times.

I have seen Kane and, while he is good, he is not a 1.85. I have personally timed most every catcher in the area and the better ones in the state of VA.

The only 1.85 in this area is Patrick Harrington and he will be in CF or in the IF at Kellam. I don't see Robert Raume behind the plate for Kellam. He played the fall in LF and DH. It will most likely be Blake Leebrick or a transfer.
