I am the host family father in Virginia for a Brazilian exchange student. This studnet is a pitcher and played for Atlee High School this past season. He has been evaluated by several folks and offered between $7,000 and $10,000 to attend at least 3 D3 schools in Virginia. His most recent evaluation was with Guy Hansen (current Richmond Braves pitching coach). Coach Hansen feels that this player is currently a solid D2/D3 prospect with a tremendous upside. The offers this student has currently received leave him with roughly $18,000 to $22,000 to pay.As his father passed away in February of 2003 and college is free in Brazil, his mother is having not in a position to afford the above. There is no viable opporunity for him to continue playing baseball in Brazil. He is scheduled to return home on June 26 and we are looking to get a little more exposure for him before he goes home. If there is anyone out there that can offer advice on showcases, etc., it would be much appreciated.

Hostdad-

With time running short I would suggest you contact TRHit who runs showcases and a showcase team. He frequents this site continuously also you can reach him through his COllege Select website (his phone number is there).. He has stong contacts up and down east coast with showcases, team coachs and college coaches.

I know he would be willing to speak to you

While I understand your thought ( Showcase Talent = money !), I'm not sure this is the only way to help this fine young fellow follow his dream. While Division 1 & 2 athletes may recieve athletic scholarships based on talent you got to assume most of these schools have already used their allowed scholarships available. With this in mind he will probably have to walk on. You may want to check with every school (D1,2 & 3), that may offer some type of international exchange program that could maybe help with some type of finacial aid package. The Division 3 schools that offered money were based on his academic positon not athletic ability. Since you have 3 schools that are interested in this young man I would select one of these schools that best fits his goals and call them and let them know this is where he wants to go. Call the baseball coach call the academic adviser and discuss all of the options that may be avaiable. I couldn't tell you the times or hours I spent in converstation with the academic advisers and the head coach of our choice. They helped us find other scholarship monies outside of what the school could offer. The first finacial package we recieved was simular to what you posted. The final package we recieved allowed our son to continue his baseball career. Pick A school and start talking and go find and showcase his talent.

Thanks to all for the great information. I will follow up on the the College Select website. We haev spoken with the group @ VWC and they were one of the schools mentioned in the original posting. We were well along in the process with Coach Kinne and H-SC regarding an International Student Scholarship and were pretty confident that our student would be plugged in to one of the five such scholarships annually awarded. However, as we got close to mid-April the admissions folks called to let us know that the five International Student Scholarships had been cut from the budget. I know one of the coaches at Longwood University and he has stated that our student could walk on, but the tuition there is in line with the other schools after the scholarship awards. Again, I appreciate your input and will follow up on the leads provided.
Here's another route you might want to look into. There are several NAIA colleges in the area that offer scholarship money, as well as, other financial assistance. The baseball is pretty good as well. My son is attending an NAIA School, Bluefield College. Young coach that is very excited about the program. They are building a new Baseball Complex this year and academically ranked among the top 50 in the US. They can be contacted thru their website, Bluefield.edu, and go to the athletics link. Good Luck
