Grade inflation is a logical consequence of the increasing admissions requirement for these top notch schools. If it takes a motivated kid a 4.0 to get into an ivy, why would their grades slide when they get to college? I would be more interested in a grade study of athletes who work at their sport full time while they're in college (even if they do not receive scholarships) compared to students who make commitments elsewhere.
