Now this might be a dumb question ,oh well,

but I wanted to know if there was a way to calculate pitching speed without a radar?, my son was working on pitching for his new team, but he's not a pitcher , he's a catcher, so I recorded him ,he hasn't been radar on anything since early march.  and it looked pretty hard. just curious ..

There are apps who stopp the flight time but that is extremely inaccurate.

The most accurate way is probably long toss distance.

I used to film the pitch, then open the video in a video editing software, count the seconds from the ball releases to ball crossing the plate, then use the distance from mound to plate minus the stride, divide by the time, and you got the average speed.

As you can see, it's complicated and you only get average speed, not instance speed at release. After doing this for a while and getting inconsistent result, I bought a pocket radar.
