That is still the goal, but it might be 2014 depending on how the grading goes. It's a complicated grading situation.
My son was also at the canes vs stars game at virginia tech. You try to tell me that you dont have a grudge against the stars when you throw your number one (Josh Sborz) for 5 innings and also got beat. The reason there is tension between the two is because you screw the stars by placing them on **** fields at your own tournaments. The virginia tech showcase you had them playing 3 games on one of the worst high school fields I have ever seen. The only way to see who is better is too have a stars vs canes tournament where you all play at a college field and not some scrub field.
So let me get this straight.
Your son's team played the Canes North 17u team in a game Sborz was pitching on English Field at Va. Tech. That's a prime scout draw happening on a prime field. And there your son's team was, right there in the middle of it. That's as good as it gets in a typical 4-game weekend. And then, if I understand you correctly, the Stars won, which means they should have showed themselves well when the light was shining on them.
And yet, you don't sound happy. Which makes me wonder, what would it take to make you happy?
I don't think anyone got more than one game at VT that weekend. It's just simple math as far as how many teams there were vs. how many time slots at that one place.
If you didn't get games at Radford, it would likely signify that the Radford coaches did not request to see the team. But if you ask them about that, you may want to approach them with a bit more delicacy.

BTW, we also had a game at Christiansburg HS during that tourney. There were as many scouts at that game as there had been for our game at VT, though they were indeed from other schools.
The field was obviously not as well groomed as English Field, but we got scouted all the same.
The scouts came, BTW, because our players asked them to, because the team we were playing (Patriots of NoVa) also did the same, and apparently because the players doing the asking were considered worth coming to see.
This is how you work the system. What you get is an opportunity, not a guarantee.

Midlo was on target with his comments re the Dynamic Baseball tournaments at Virginia Tech. While I did not look over the 2011 schedule, I am very familiar with the difficulty of creating the schedules for 2010 and 2009 and assume that 2011 was no different. Not many fields are available in the VT vicinity (Blacksburg High School has never been available, the minor league team in Pulaski typically reports the same weekend as the Dynamic Baseball tournament so that field is not available and some very nice fields in Roanoke are booked way out with return engagements.) That leaves Christiansburg HS, Radford University, Virginia Tech and the field used by Radford High School (which charges an arm and a leg for its use.) Very few teams were slotted (in 2010 and 2009) to play more than one game at Virginia Tech. Those that were slotted for more than one were so slotted because they arrived early to play Thursday night or played an "off time" for one of their games or because the VT staff indicated which teams were to play more than once on their field. It is extremely difficult to slot every team to play once at VT when the number of slots barely exceeds the number of teams playing and when a second game of the day has to be worked in at another location. The situation is further exacerbated when some teams (typically Northern Va and PA teams) request to play only on Saturday and Sunday because their players are still in school or teams request to not play other teams which they regularly play (again, mainly Northern Va teams.) The solution would be to cut in half the number of teams accepted in the tournament. However, even with more teams accepted each succeeding year, more are turned away than in the preceding year (at least in 2010 and 2009). Perhaps Fairfax17 should encourage his (son's) team to skip that tournament; there are other teams clamoring for the opportunity to play in that location, even on a high school field.
@fairfaxball17,
No, no grudge on our end. We were short on pitching all weekend, with some guys not prepared to throw. UVA asked to see Josh throw and he had proper rest and kept his pitch count down. We only had 7 arms for 4 games that weekend due to overuse from the HS season. You guys won the game. What are you upset about?
@Midlo/WBReporter, you are correct in every point. Some people work with the system and some complain.

I think some of this is getting back to basically my original point. As a player I understand the necessity of contacting coaches, that burden is on me. However when I sent them the schedule for that particular tournament they only wanted to know when I was playing at English Field. What I'm saying is that, the more coaches recognize the team name i.e. the Canes, the more likely they are to think 'hey, if he's on this team, then he must be able to play' and come out to games even if they are at some high school field in the middle of nowhere. That is what I, and many players I know, call the 'Canes Factor'.
Utilman,
Unfortunately, you contacted the laziest coaches in the country who were unwilling to travel another 30 minutes. Most of the coaches I speak with, do not fall into this category.

Most coaches are going to list the guys they want to see, then look at the schedule, and then figure out when they can see whom.
We will often get a request that a particular pitcher throw in a particular game, in order to accommodate a coach who might only be able to attend that one game.
If you think it's bad at VT/Radford, have you been to the summer WWBA's? The first tourney I went to there had something like 72 teams, and a lot of the games were at the East Cobb complex or pretty darned close by. This past summer there were 216 teams and some of our games were an hour away, or worse given the vagaries of metro Atlanta traffic. This coming summer I hear there will be over 300 teams participating.
I'm hoping PG gets its huge new complex on line by 2013, because it's just getting too hard to have coaches cover all the games, and it's hard to ask someone to take a tightly scheduled week and give up 2 hours just to drive to see one game, esp. when they can wait to see you at a closer venue later in the week.
I guess that means that a lot of the difficulty is just dealing with the proliferation of travel teams. It seems every time you look there are more and more of them. You'd think at some point there'd be a limit on how many could operate effectively, but assuming there is a limit, we don't seem to have reached it even yet.

Not sure why this thread turned into a "grudge" between the Canes and Stars...like I said earlier, my son has played for both teams and both coaching staffs...we have never detected any grudges from either team...competitive spirit YES...after the VT game I saw alot of hand shaking and interaction between the 2 teams. Nothing but respect for both groups from this family.
As for the fields...playing at VT was great for the players...the HS we played at was not very good at all, but I have put together tournaments and I know how hard it is to ALWAYS get top line fields...not a big deal...sounds like most of the teams had to play there at some point. I have no doubt the Canes did whatever they could to get the best available fields. It happens...no complaint here.
It seems to me that when two teams play a game against one another - they are both playing on the same field. Not sure how a good field or bad field helps one team over the other or how a game played on a perfect field is a better indicator of the best team than a game played on a "scrub" field?!?
Son has not played for either team - has played against both teams - respect for both.

Often it can be a good idea to contact ahead of time. Not all players need to contact recruiters and scouts. There are teams where this is unnecessary. There are teams that are heavily followed automatically. There are players that are heavily scouted automatically.
Other than actually being on one of these teams or being one of these players, the next best thing is to play against them. Where that game is played doesn't much matter. We have seen many relatively unknown (at the time) players end up at schools like Clemson, Auburn, Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech, etc., based on the above mentioned. Actually Florida is now heavily recruiting a kid from the midwest because of this.
It's fine to contact ahead of time, but at the WWBA our staff sees everything. It is very common that someone will standout in an early game without a lot of scouting attention. By the time the week is over that same player is being followed heavily. Word travels very fast.
FWIW, I don't understand the title of this thread. Is it about head to head competition or is it about recruiting/scouting. With absolutely no disrespect to any of the outstanding programs in Virginia... The Canes are one of about a dozen or more teams in the nation that automatically draw large scouting attention. The results surely prove that!
Anyway, I think this is good for all those who are able to compete against those type teams. Once again the very best thing a player who is lacking lots of recognition can do is to be where the well known prospects are. People should thank these high level talent programs and players rather than argue about who is better. I wonder how many outstanding prospects were first recognized when they played a game against East Cobb, Scorpions, ABD, Marucci, Canes, FTB Mizuno, Juice, SGV, San Diego Show, Dirtbags, Midland, etc.
One more thing... Things tend to change over time. Before the Canes there were other teams that were the top draw. It's all based on the "recognized talent" on any given team. There's no reason to argue about anything, it has been proven time and again. If someone can't see it, they must not want to see it.

Wow, that turned kind of nasty... All I can say about where the Stars played is that there were coaches over at the HS field that we played at and I believe that it was there that one of our pitchers got looked at that ultimately got him his offer so take from that what you want...
Would the players and parents rather have all the games at the nicest fields? Of course, who wouldn't. Do the host teams maybe get a few games at more choice locations? Probably. I think that that simply means that the Stars need to host a couple of their own events and that will take care of that. LOL
When I look at the number of players that were committed its pretty hard to complain about any of it though. Over the full course of the season I would say that we got plenty of our fair share of games on very nice fields...
I agree with dblemup though. Lots of great sportsmanship after the VT game. Given that we play for the Stars but have close friends on the Canes I have nothing but respect for both groups.

Exactly.
I tried to teach my kids never to resent excellence in others: recognize it, respect it, learn from it, associate yourself with it, aspire to match or exceed it. But don't resent it or root against it.

Well said by both PG and Swamp.

Coach
You do not need to justify anything. Looking at your Canes 2012 North Roster every pitcher you own except for Godfrey (who is a good pitcher that is coming off an injury and should still go somewhere to play) and two others (TY Brown was not on your team during the summer) have committed to D1 programs. What were you to do... throw one of your position players to make fairfaxball17 happy?
