It was only a matter of time before the axe fell. Due to a lack of funds all spring sports for sophomores have been cancelled.

There are 55 Chicago public schools that have(had) a sophomore baseball team. This represents several hundred players who found out on the first day of practice that there will be no season.

Is anyone else hearing rumblings of this happening in your states?

I'm going to guess it doesn't mean sophomores can't play baseball. It means there isn't a team specifically for sophs who can't make JV or varsity. Most high schools around the country don't have this in the first place. My high school had a soph team thirty-five years ago. I have no idea when it ended. Almost all sophs ultimately headed for varsity were on JV.

I went to Lane Tech and graduated last year. The sophomore team is sophomores and anyone younger. Freshman can play up but they have to have enough talent. I don't get why they would cut the sophomore team though. It would make more sense if the freshman team were to get cut. That's too bad though. I'll probably talk to my high school coach and see what they are trying to do about it. It is unfortunate for those soph who are talented but have a better varsity player ahead of them. Questionable timing as well.
One of the news articles suggested corporate sponsorship for the fifty-five sophomore teams. The writer thought it would be positive publicity for corporations to have their logos on the uniforms. I can imagine how that would be received by the tight cheeked state atheltic association. These governing bodies usually have great difficulty thinking outside the box.

This is what public schools in Illinois do. They cut things that solve nothing other than tick people off so they vote for tax increases.

Yeah, I'm sure the 40+ teachers laid off in my home school district within the last two months would much rather see underclass athletics than their job. Sometimes it's not the school districts at fault..

Most often, certainly now, these cuts are occurring because we have run out of money.
No gas in the economic engine.
    So here we sit.
    On the shoulder.
Tough finding a safe parking spot along the Prosperity Parkway.
Barely enough juice to keep the flashers going.
Learning lessons that we could never imagine.
But not all is gloomy... spring and baseball looms ahead!
