Son attended baseball camp today at a major D-1 University. He really did well. Coach approached son and informed him that he would make a good fit for the team. He is the style of player that this team is looking for. The coach asked son for cell phone number and told him he would be calling him to schedule an official visit soon. With that being said, has anyone ever had that happened where the phone call never came? What can we expect next? and, How big of a scholorship should we expect for a middle infielder?

Sounds like good news!

You just left the coach today, I suggest that you look towards the positive not the negative. You neeed to be patient.

The coach has to offer your son 25% minimum or walk on status which means nothing.

Do your homework on costs so you will be prepared and above all, make sure that this is where your son wishes to spend the next 4-5 years earning his degree and playing baseball.

Good luck.
Can't say much other than "things" are unfolding as they should. When you combine talent and exposure, coaches begin to notice. The interaction between the coach and the player is the beginning of the recruiting cycle. Take a breath and relax. Stay proactive and keep up the exposure. To answer some of your questions: Do coaches promise to call and then never follow through as promised? Sure they do. But don’t let it stop there. Be proactive! Your son can call within a week and ask the coach if he has a date on the official visit. Your son shouldn’t spend his time waiting on something that may or ay not happen. How much of a scholarship do middle infielders get? Of course the answer to that is 0% to 100% and everything in between. You will know the answer to that when the coach makes the offer. Best of luck!

"oh what a feelin"!!!

So true! It is exciting. Very accurately described as a roller coaster ride. I still remember the emotional highs of coaches’ compliments and the realization that a dream is coming true. It’s like a mirage appearing in the distance that suddenly begins to materialize. Pinch yourself to make sure it’s not a dream and keep us posted. Smile

I am bruised from all the pinches and I will keep ya'll posted for sure. Its just really hard to swallow right now. This whole summer we were thinking JUCO first, then out of the blue a major D-1 throws there name in the hat! Who knows? Soon we may be wearing the big maroon and white...."GIG EM" possibly???
Good deal txbb6 -

Heed advice of Tiger Paw Mom, but follow up with phone call/email indicating interest. My guess is that the "visit" will coincide with a football game. Remember that there are numerous players recruited at every position. Your son may be at the top now or somewhere in the middle. You move up based not only on baseball ability, but grades and SAT scores. If grades are an issue (your JC reference) make sure he starts out the school year strong and gets ready to take the SAT and do well.
WOW!!!! things are moving a lot faster than I anticipated. Coach called son today and set up meeting with son and parents (us) for Friday. Coach told son at that time there will be a scholorship offer. Coach said he will get the normal scholorship that other infielders get. I imagine it will be 25% which is good for this school. AHEM...... "GIG 'EM" ????? MAYBE???

That coach has shown a tendency of running hot & cold with recruits, so I would recommend taking things one step at a time.

thanks, and i have heard the same thing about this coach. i have a friend who is in limbo right now with this team. thats why i put what i did in my first post. i appreciate the warning.
You've probably already done this, but if not, do some homework for Friday. Check out the roster, what years the other MIF are and their stats. Read the game reports from last season.

It will give you an idea of their depth and how your son might be used --- and it will give your son (and you, if appropriate) some questions to ask.

It's very easy at these sessions to hear what you want to hear. Try (really hard Wink) to be the listener, as objective as possible.

Best of luck to your son --- there are great times ahead!
I went through the same process last summer and had many experiences just like your sons. If a coach gives you his cell number than that means that he has a high interest in you. coaches can only call you once a week by NCAA rules. The coach should call for an official within a week after the camp. If he doesnt call then you may want to call the coach and ask for an honest evaluation on how he thinks you compare to other recruits. It's important to find this out, and he will continue to call you weekly if he really is interested. Continue to look at all your options though. many times coaches will also say that they are looking for your exact qualifications but be wise, they must look at many recruits because not everyones going to agree to their school. In terms of money, figure out whether you qualify for financial aid, i wouldnt start asking about money right away. 50% is always decent money for a middle infielder. Also jsut because you go on an official and the coach calls you weekly be careful. I went on an official, was offered good money, was supposedly slotted in the top 2 spots, coach told me what to do for admission and after i applied i got a notice that i wasnt accepted, and the coach never returned contact with me again and all other schools i was looking at had full rosters. thats pretty much the lowest and worst thing a coach can commit. that normally doesnt happen but just be wise and know who your dealing with.
thank you all for the sound advise. i have done my homework (the homework that i know about anyway). it appears that he will have to earn his spot. there will be 5 infielders when he is a freshman 3 of which that will be jrs. and that is saying that they will still be there. i reckon i will know more friday morning. the thing that i am having trouble with is that a top 10 nationally ranked D-1 team is recruiting my son. that in itself is hard to turn a way from or swallow.
well sounds pretty good to me. with a a top 10 school they may sign 15 players or so every year. just be honest and try to find out how much playing time your son will get. he's def going to want to be their starting infielder so look at other possible recruits that may be coming onto the program and think practically. remember if a school like this is willing to recruit your son, then probably a lot of other schools would be willing to. ive also known a couple of guys that were top prospects coming out of highschool, went to top 20 schools and got offered decent money and had to transfer cause they never played as much as they would have liked. dont pass up this opportuninty though but if you have a lot of schools of this caliber recruiting your son then that should say how much playing time he will get.

You said that your son was " thinking about it ", which I completely understand, but is there a time frame/deadline in which he has to give the coaches an answer?

they basically told us was "we arent playing games with this". he was offered on friday so i would assume (and you know what that could mean), they expect a verbal commitment soon. i am thinking this week.

Did the 25% cover only tuition, or also room and board? I may be mistaken, but I think the new NCAA rules require 25% of the total cost, not just tuition. You might want to check into this.

infield08- i am not sure about the ncaa rules but he was only offered 25% of the tuition. i will look into this. somebody on this site should know.
IMHO, I would not put yourself in a box towards committing. If you have other opportunities and are going on officila visits and son is interested in other schools I would take those officila visits.
I think that is very great they offered him a ship. And I am not saying that you should not consuder it at all.

All I am saying is make sure this is the place he would like to go, because at the end of the day he is the one that is going to be in the program.

Sorry for rambling.
Congrats and good luck

I would get a clarification just to be sure. They can offer your 25% of whatever they want. If it is tuition only, is that affordable, if it is 25% of total that is different.

I don't think that statement is correct. The NCAA rules for '08's stipulate a 25% minimum for 'ships. And I am fairly certain that that 25% can't be 25% of just anything (books for instance).

I think that the 25% is of the cost of attendance rather than just tuition, but that needs to be verified.
