When a coach gives his "support" to a pre-read, does he usually tell the player that he's doing that?  Does he ever tell him?  My 2022 had a meeting with a HA D3 coach today, coach said he's all in on him for baseball and has sent his info up for evaluation.  Didn't say anything about "support".  Should 2022 follow up and ask him?  Appreciate your thoughts.

I'm not aware of coaches ever giving support for a pre-read. What happens is coaches send the kid's transcripts and scores to admissions, and they send back a yes or a no.  If it's yes, then the coach may offer the kid one of his slots.

The point is that in most cases at most HA D3 colleges, coach support doesn't mean that a borderline or unqualified applicant will get it.  It means that an applicant who is qualified, but who would not be likely to be admitted to highly selective school, gets the scale tipped in his favor by the coach.

From experience and what I've heard, coaches don't usually invite kids to campus until the pre-read is done, so this college may be a little different than most.

Some HA schools admissions will allow coaches a few passes to "fringy" candidates. Is that the support you are thinking of? It is school specific. One HA D3 coach strongly suggest my kid to retake the SAT even though the school was test optional that year. Kid passed as he was not that interested in that school. His current offer told him his pre read was good.

Schools that do pre-reads usually have some sort of arrangement with their admissions department.  They do the pre-read to know whether they would be able to offer a slot (or whatever term they use) that would be essentially guaranteed.  So it doesn't mean that they will offer him support, it means that they will know whether or not admissions says they can.  An offer of support is the next stage.

At super-selective schools, if the coach really wants your son for baseball, he will probably tell you up front (i.e. before you ask) what he is offering:  something like "I have 6 names that I can send to admissions with a 99% guarantee, and yours is one of them."  That is different from "I send a list to admissions and you will be on it but ultimately it is up to them, but if you get in I would love to have you on the team" which is different from "I don't have a slot for you/room on my list, but if you get in on your own you have a place on the team."  Whichever you get, you can ask "what percentage of kids with this support do get in?"  Coaches know that you get one shot at ED, so they should understand.

Exactly.  This should be a golden post.

Thanks for the link and the reminder that this was out there.  Appreciate all of the comments really as we're starting to get into the thick of it: meetings with coaches, requests for transcripts/scores, small "camp" invites, etc.  I've read on this board many times that you'll know where you're loved, I'm just trying to further understand the love language.

@chazball's OP indicates that HA D3 offers are beginning to emerge.  Being mid-July, this is slightly earlier than other posts on HSBaseballWeb indicate was/is the norm.  WWBA for rising seniors just concluded, so maybe that's the reason...?  You veterans on the forum, per a traditional line graph (avg. temp, the DOW, whatever), when are the usual spikes in HA D3 offer activity for HS seniors?  I assumed a huge upward spike in early August, downward trending through October or November of the senior year, when it levels off near zero.  Are there other annual milestones that I'm ignoring?  Your thoughts?

Speaking from my experience you are pretty much on the nose.   The summer circuit of HF/showball etc concludes in early August.  Many D3's have prospect camps in late August / September but they are to raise money unless a coach specifically is saying the HC needs to see you in person.   My son got all of his offers immediately, in the 2 weeks following, head first in August of 2019.  I think the coaches want to lock down 4-5 spots with the players they want and then continue to build the roster with quality players until they hit their limit.  Who gets admitted also factors in...  From my experience and people I know a huge spike in August/early September, yes.

When a coach gives his "support" to a pre-read, does he usually tell the player that he's doing that?  Does he ever tell him? --  The Coach is sponsoring or championing your son's pre-read with Admissions.   Your son is on the border of interest to hopefully serious interest.   The pre-read is getting to the business end of HA recruiting, and Admissions always has the final say.   Your son is sending his grades and transcripts into the school, so yes everybody knows this is going on.   In my experience, you will hear either "yes", "no" or "he has to bring up the GPA or SAT, ACT".

My 2022 had a meeting with a HA D3 coach today, coach said he's all in on him for baseball and has sent his info up for evaluation.  Didn't say anything about "support". -- He isn't going to do a pre-read for nothing.  In my experience the support is implied.   Coaches only do things when they want to or need to.   Good luck!

Should 2022 follow up and ask him?  Appreciate your thoughts. --- Did they give your son a timeline?  They should have or possibly your son missed that data point.   My son did a number of HA pre-reads.   It took between 3-5 business days for almost all them.  Your son should absolutely follow up if he has questions or if he doesn't hear back in 7-10 days.   Whatever you do, do not let up on the gas with other opportunities.   This is the recruiting time of year he should be talking to as many coaches and schools as possible.

Again, best of luck!

Fenway, thanks for your thoughts and for your experience. No timeline from this particular coach or at least that one that the boy heard, but the coach did say that he would get back to him as soon as he heard back from admissions. Others that have asked have been less than clear about timing so I am going to encourage the boy to follow up and see what they say. Big week as he has three tours/coach meetings still to go and I will have him add this to his list of things to ask the coaches. No stepping off the gas until he finds the right fit and gets the right offer and even then it's no guarantee until ED. Good stuff, thank you for the help!
