Coaching Changes??

Oklahoma and Texas A&M are looking for coaches and have (at least informally) approached Dave Van Horn at Arkansas and Andy Lopez at Arizona. The Arizona athletic director (Jim Livengood) is quoted in today's Arizona Republic as saying that Lopez is not leaving Tucson and that the school will continue to improve his situation, especially (I am sure) as it relates to salary and fan interest. By the way, the OU total package is said to be worth $500,000 per year.

Long time assistant, Coach Jan Weissberg, University of Kentucky, resigned a few weeks ago. No replacement yet that I know of.

There will be a new coaching staff at William & Mary come fall.

The South Carolina papers claim Texas has asked permission to court Ray Tanner. Now I see they are talking to Danny Hall?
Duke has interviewed a coach from Princeton.

Not sure Beenthere, but son's BF goes to Duke and they met some coach from Princeton a few weeks back after the coach resigned. I could try to find out.

Shayne Stock,Head Coach at Transylvania University, Lexington, KY resigned to go to Hanover College.

Long time assistant coach Dan Hartleb takes over the reins at University of Illinois.

Duke better step it up after this years embarassing revelations.

They also should be embarassed by the baseball facility. The field is OK but it is surrounded by about 500 chairbacks and another small number of aluminum benches. Add to that a very ugly industrial looking grey shed in left field. It has a mostly grassless hill on the 1st base side which could be greatly improved without much expense. Very un-ACC like.

Finally, the local fans were like a scene from Deliverence (the movie), swearing and calling opposing players names. Coach K's classy style has obviously NOT had any effect on the baseball program.

A fellow from Princeton sounds like a good way to turn things around.

Rob Childress (Nebraska associate head coach/pitching coach) gets Texas A&M job over some other big names. Met him on a recruiting trip & was very impressed - getting a quality Big 12 job at age 36 takes some doing.

Honestly, I expected more moves by now. Seems like a light year unless we see a lot of "trickle effect" changes where coaches start leaving one team for another. That's about 7 jobs open right now.

I too have heard a rumor concerning a Virginia College coach and the Duke opening, but it doesn't make much sense. The coach involved in the rumor has not been "on station" long enough to make it a high probability (at least to me).

William and Mary's Jim Farr is leaving. The paper I work for has already published it. The official annoucement is expected this week.

due to contractual obligations nothing can be said officially about Coach Farr leaving until July 1st. I am sure that whoever is the new head coach will want to pick his own top assistant.

VaDad would be better hooked into this than I would be.

Because my son plays college baseball, albeit not at W&M, I don't pump our writers for information, nor do I offer anything they couldn't get on their own. I have to be aware of conflicts of interest. I won't let us be wrong, but I have to keep a certain distance.

It is official Jim Farr has resigned as Head Coach at William & Mary.

The local paper in Williamsburg mentions both Jim Harvell at Christopher Newport and Nick Boothe at Virginia Wesleyan as possibile candidates for the job.

Dan Simonds, former Asst., has been named head coach at Miami (OH).

WSU coach Gene Stephenson will be replacing Cochell ar OU. He is also taking entire staff with him.

check again folks. Stephenson has recanted on the deal and is going back to Wichita. Some bs explanation that OU had "unresolved" scholarship issues. Don't know why, but I take that to mean he doesn't have enough scholarship $ available the next year or so and won't otherwise be able to clean house and bring in his own recruits.

Interesting pattern here. On 7/9 he denies going to OU, on 7/11 he calls it his dream job and is leaving Wichita and on 7/12--oooops, never mind, I'm going back to Wichita. Now this is a guy I want to commit 4 years to

OU message boards say OU had 15.7 scholarships. Also mentions some were signed/renewed recently by Golloway. Sounds like he know he wasn't they guy and wanted to stick it to OU. By the way, if your 4 over on scholies should you have done better?

I would question the 15.7 scholarships as that is not sanctioned. D-1 baseball allows 11.7 scholarships. So having 4 additional scholarships would have no impact on the season results because there should never be 4 additional scholarships. Besides, the NCAA is likely to take AWAY from the number of scholarships allowed for a men's sport rather than increase the number.

Jack Leggett from Clemson was supposedly on his way to talk to OU when the AD from CU went to him. Appears, in a newspaper article and radio broadcast, Jack felt that Clemson should be on an even pay scale with South Carolina, since Ray tanner had just gotten some big bucks. I am sure that his "suggestion" for an even pay scale will be met. Ray Tanner and Danny Hall were on their way to Texas but when offerd more money they stayed with their programs. I didn't blame Jack one bit, and he spoke openly in public about it.
I am all for coaches making changes for whatever reasons they have, and most of it is for more money elsewhere. Lots of stuff like this goes on this time of the year. In defense of OU, it may not have had anything to do with not enough scholarship money available. It may have just been an issue of more money and many coaches usually will not admit that in public. It's easier sometimes to blame it on the other guy.

I think the "over scholarships" are more common that we think. During a recruiting visit with Coach Randy Mazey, at that time the recruiting coordinator at the University of Tennessee, I asked Coach Mazey how many scholarships they had promised. The coach said they had 17 full scholarships promised. I asked how he could do this with 11.7 being the maximum allocated. He simply said, "We will be at 11.7 by the compliance date". I asked what if all the players sign? He said: "We will be at 11.7 by the compliance date".

Stephenson backed out of Soonerland because "scholarship issues have arisen that are unresolveable to our satisfaction." Sources say Stephenson was told Oklahoma was four full scholarships over the allowed limit of 11.7, which made Stephenson nervous that the Sooners would be punished by the NCAA.

Stephenson said Joe Castiglione disclosed the issue to him when the two first met at a Perry, Okla., McDonalds on Friday afternoon.

"We both believed that somehow we could work this out and find a way through it," Stephenson said in a telephone interview. "(Monday), it became apparent later on in the afternoon, in a meeting with the academic people, that this was going to take a much longer time to work out than we anticipated or could live with."

I don't doubt it, I saw the article. Maybe why eveyone is turning away. But anything is possible and the above was JMO.
However, if so, coach should have not made an announcement yet, if he knew there was a problem. He created a lot of unnecessary stress for lots of players and families.

I think it is called "redshirting" and I think the compliance date may be second sememster, not positive but I think that is when it is. Or in the meantime, I think they can use "waivers". If we think spreading out the 11.7 is easy, it is NOT.I am learning day by day...lol.Anyone feel free to correct me or if you know, share.

Ok Guys this is how the 11.7 works. Each school has 11.7 full rides and when I say full rides it means EVERYTHING! If a coach does accidentally go over his 11.7 then the compliance office starts to give academic money in its place. Basically the compliance offices are a big friend of the programs if you catch my drift. But in my opinion it is not fair that football receives 80 fulls so I hope all compliance groups can help as many eligible guys as possible.

Congratulations to former Notre Dame Assistant Coach Dave Grewe now Head Coach at Michigan State University. I had some nice conversations with Coach Grewe and he treated my son very well. We wish him lots of luck.
