My son has received letters from colleges. Some (not all) ask for the top 3 prospects in our area. So... the question is... do we name the ones we consider to be the top (thereby showing we are baseball knowledgeable of our area)? Or, do we leave it blank (because we are somewhat selfish and don't want any more competition than is already identified out there)?

Times to play devils advocate.

Why would you worry about them recruitiing one of those kids instead of your son?

Not to say that couldn't happen. But, consider this:

A good fit means more than finding a school you want to play at. It also means finding a school where the coach is eager to have you play for him.

A good fit means more than just signing a paper and doning a uniform. A good fit means you actually get to PLAY.

Do you really think your son has found a good fit - if the coach's interest in your son is so marginal that just a mere mention of someone else's name on a recruiting questionaire will cause him to lose interest?

I say - take the chance. Write down the names. If he loses interest, you never really had it to begin with.
We had similar questions. We went to a local website for prep schools and picked the top three picks from schools that he'd played against. Once again, he didn't play varsity last year...but was called up for a few varsity games to pitch. So while he didn't face these players often, he faced them nonetheless.
Just to clarify.
The reason that Son did summer team on some and local players for the other was because each one ask for it differently. So Son just filled it out as asked. We figure they want to know who the summer boys are(or kids you have played with) to see if you play with any of the BIG BOYS.

He just wanted to fill everything out fully. The question that bothered him the most was what other Colleges are you considering. He is only a Junior now so he has 3 in mind but they may not be the best fit.

That's not as bad as when they word it "Who else is recruiting you?". For my daughter, it was easy to write the schools she was interested in but was very cautious/leery about who she'd say was recruitng her.
We named the three. In my sons case the top three players in our area are all studs that will be first rounders in the June draft this year. We thought it would give us "BETTER" exposure since these kids were known nationally.

We assumed they wanted to see the kind of competition your kid is playing with. In our case it was very good competition.
