It sure would be great for Duke to make a regional.

The team had great leadership all year from two seniors, Matt Williams and Nate Freiman - both of whom batted around .350. My son stayed with them at their apartment during his visit. Terrific young men, and very talented ballplayers.

Williams is a semifinalist for the Johnny Bench award, and Freiman tied the Duke career HR record, and has 19 so far this year.

Coach McNally has done a great job turning the program around. The team has improved every year.

The ACC, I do beleive is allowed 7 spots for the NCAA tourney field, best of luck.

Actually, no conference is allotted more than one spot for automatic bids. Of the 64 tournament slots, 30 are automatic bids and 34 are at large bids. The number of at large bids any conference receives is at the discretion of the selection committee and there is no pre set allotment per conference.

The RPI and SOS is a factor in the selection process. So is late season performance.

FWIW, we heard this on TV, while watching an SEC series this past weekend.

If Duke fairs well in the tourney, the ACC will have 7 contenders (is that better).
Congrats to Duke! First of all there is not a better group of guys than Coach Mac , Coach Boggs and Coach Snedeker. I got the opportunity to know them well and you can not help but pull for people like them. They are passionate about Duke Univ and its baseball program. And they are the type of people you want your kid to be around. When Coach Mac took this job he said it was his dream job. He said he was going to bring in coaches that were as dedicated as he was to bringing a winning program to Duke Univ.

I predicted this after I met them during the recruitment of my son a couple of years ago. After my son had verballed to his college program I was watching a game at East Cobb and Coach Boggs came up to me and sat down beside me. He congratulated me and wished my son good luck. We literally sat for 2 hours watching a game together and just talked baseball. Everytime I see the coaches or talk to them on the phone the first thing out of their mouth is "How is your wife doing? How is Jeff doing? Great to see you. Come by and visit when you get a chance."

They are my second favorite team in college baseball. They are a class act in every way. I wish them all the best. Except in the first round of the ACC tourney!!

By the way when they were recruiting my son in hs Coach Boggs and Coach Snedeker came to several games , at least four. They would email , write letters and always do exactly what they said they were going to do. If you are lucky enough to get recruited by this staff consider it an honor.

I love the "I heard this on TV" ---"I assume" stuff-- just the facts maam , just the facts!!

TR, now that is a fascinating post.
Opinions, based on assumptions, are the part of the lifeblood of this site...and you have expressed more of each than than anyone. Cool

Let's leave the discussion until after the selection, who knows they might even get 8. Razz

That's very true, they are the most highly though of conference in college baseball.

CPLZ, now those are some opinions based on assumptions!!!! Big Grin
I am sure you won't get any arguments in the hallways at Baseball America but you may create some controversy in States bordering the Pacific Ocean.

I was kidding about the 8. Big Grin

Good discussion about the 64 field, national seeds and possible hosts for regionals.

I don't think they would have to win the ACC, but take a few wins to get in.

Regardless, this topic has been about an ACC program that has made big strides in their program in a few short years, amd kudos to Boston College also.

The west coast has certainly not gotten their due when it comes to respect from the tournament committee, to that I agree wholeheartedly.

It opens the whole, "self fulfilling RPI prophecy", debate, where artificial floors and ceilings occur because once the conference season starts, there is little allowance for improvement or fall off because of the support, or lack of, from your conference peers.

This is a very, very interesting college baseball season. With so many "top" teams experiencing so many losses. I think for all the negative press the USD and compressed season have garnered, the one great thing, has been the equalization of pitching. No longer can warm weather teams spread out their games to get their top 3 16 starts each. Pitching staffs have had to be 5 man rotations for the most part. My personal belief is that this is good for college baseball. More players play, and staffs get an equal amount of work. We've come much closer to apples to apples than years past, and that, is a good thing.
I don't know if they deserved a regional, they did not do well in conference games 16-11, missed some due to rain and had a lighter non conference schedule. However, winning the conference title should have given them more slack over Tech getting a regional.
All in all the ACC did well this year, still proving, in my opinion that they are the most competitve conference in college baseball. Smile
I've heard folks say UVA had a light conference schedule, but when you finish 6th in RPI you must be playing a pretty stiff schedule. How you finish 6th in RPI and go undefeated to win the ACC title and don't get rated in the top 16 is beyond me.

I suspect that, having already given out 4 regional sites to ACC teams, they bumped the 5th ACC team down to # 17 just to keep from loading up on the ACC too much.

I realize 16-11-1 doesn't knock your socks off initially, until you realize how densely packed the ACC was at the top this year. No one won more than 19 conference games, and with 16 wins, UVA finished 6th in the regular season. That's three wins separating 6 teams. Parity indeed.
In these days of the USD and compressed schedule, RPI has really lost its significance. RPI gets set by week 5 and the beginning of conference play. Without the time or ability to travel any longer, conferences don't get the chance to have their RPI changed throughout the course of the season. It is now nothing more than a self fulfilling prophecy.
