I heard Connor Powers went on a offical visit to Miss.State last weekend. Is this true? A Illinois player playing for a power house like that, that's like O'connor going to Florida ST. or Gawenda going to Miami. What other Illinois player's went to top rated program's?,past or present.?

Paul Petrulis, OakPark-RiverForest, '90, played for Ron Polk at Mississippi State from 1991-1993, when he was drafted by the Mets in the 8th round.

They (MSU) were rated #1 for 3 weeks of his junior year and went to #1 when they beat Mike Sirotka and LSU in the Superdome during the Louisiana/Mississippi Challenge.

Things headed South quickly, though, when Jay Powell(big leaguer for about 6-7 seasons) permitted a walk-off home run to an Ole Miss Rebel player in the Mayor's Trophy game in Jackson, MS. that year.

Congrats to Connor Powers.

The fans and atmosphere at Dudy Noble in Starkville are the finest in America! Spend an SEC weekend in Starkville folks; visit the Left Field Lounge; and, you'll soon see why.

Recently....Cesar Carrillo, from Mt. Carmel and U of Miami (where he was an All American) is a rising minor league star. (not sure whose organization)

CentralIl - was cleaning out a closet and found some old videotapes from college. Back in late 80's I hosted a sports tv/radio program and did ISU play by play for student station. I interviewed your brother a few times. He was great to deal with then and also helpful last year when my son was looking at schools.
Saw him a few times when he was out scouting. After watching the old tapes he has kept in much better shape than I have!

Thanks for the kind words about Jeff. I think he's a great guy but I'm biased. He and his wife have raised three great boys too.

Back a few years after a high cholesterol count and some warnings from his doctor, he really began to watch his diet. While he never was fat, he lost a few pounds and I would guess he is near his high school weight. Also got back to jogging, with his chocolate Lab when he is home (not often this time of year). When he eats, its usually chicken or self-provided venison. He's become quite the cook and even had an article written about his wild game cooking in the Pantagraph. He has come to love red wine and has become quite knowledgeable about it. Basically he eats very healthy.
Jimmy Robinson---Sullivan High School ( Chicago ) 89 , a top catcher in the chicago area attended Miss St. on baseball scholarship for three years until getting drafted by the Cubbies . Is now a scout for Boston Red Sox in the Texas region . Older brother Dewey works for Houston Astros as director of pitching developement with the big club .
Its not too often you will find a public leaguer going to Miss St.

Holy Bovine,

As Connor's uncle I am curious where you played in the Pros? DI, DII or any college? The biggest problem with this website is adults/kids (Don't really know because of the ridiculous member profile) making fun of kids.

I don't have enough space to say what a wonderful kid Connor is and by the way he's a pretty good baseball player too.
Pat's...

Typical teenagers.

Don't take it personally and you'll be fine.

We've tried to eliminate much of the personal attacks on kids in the past but some people persist in "attacking" kids. Not sure why.

Welcome.

Good luck to Connor. My son, Paul Petrulis, played for Ron Polk at Mississippi State from 1991-1993, before being drafted by the New York Mets.

If you are a college baseball fan, folks, make sure you get a chance to "experience" college baseball at its finest at Mississippi State during an SEC weekend. Nothing like it in the country!
Connor Powers is one great kid.

Ditto his talent level.

As far as MSU is concerned, he'd have a chance to play with and against the very best.

Having said that he should look mhard at FSU, the # 1 ranked team in the coaches, writers and Collegiate baseball polls!

Btw, the great Ron Polk (MSU head coach) voted for FSU as his # 1 team in this weeks poll!
Gentlemen:

I posted just under Holy Bovine and my post was an inquiry about Connor's plans. There has been quite alot of discussion here in the Illinois forum concerning Connor and his substantial capabilities...people are interested in knowing about him and where he is headed.

Holy Bovine asked initially about Connor's future and there were no responses, so the next post by Holy bovine was most likely intended to solicit a response...and it did! It raised some hackles certainly.

Perhaps the excess of question marks was misleading to you? Being interested in Connor's path myself I did not interpret the post as being demeaning...really.

Please keep us posted on his progress. good

That's great news regarding Connor Powers choice to attend Mississippi State. Great coach and program and also the opportunity to work with Dr. Walter Herbison, arguably the finest sports psychologist in the country. Walter has helped players from LSU, MSU and many others. He is at the top of his profession.
Talent .....You are mistaken . Like i mentioned in an earlier post , back in the late 80s , Jimmy Robinson from Sullivan High school in Chicago ( a public leaguer ) went to Miss ST . on scholarship . Jimmy was there for three years and then was drafted by the Cubs . Couple of years later , shoulder injury ended his career . Jimmy was a catcher .
lths...Yes, Paul was drafted in the 8th round in 1993, by the New York Mets.

Played pro ball for 5 years. Lots of memories but a ton of players ahead of him in the Mets organization, i.e., Rey Ordonez and Edgardo Alfonso, among others.

Ron usually doesn't offer anything to someone from "up North", unless he's got pretty good scouting reports about a kid playing at the SEC level right out of the gate.

Think he'll do fine.

Maybe we should rent a bus and go down and see an SEC weekend series and cheer him on next year?

In my opinion: finest D1 baseball in America in the SEC; the finest fans in college baseball; one of the nicest facilities; and, the Left Field Lounge...all that matters. And, to those of you that are young enough to enjoy...some of the prettiest Southern belles you will ever see.

In reply to talent4thgame, Mike Kelly of Maine West (Des PLaines,IL)back in the mid 70's went on to play for Ron Polk at MSU back then. Mike was 1st team All-American playing CF at MSU. Then several of my teammates from Maine West went to play for Ron in 1978 as well.
Starkville MS is baseball heaven and the baseball field is beautiful. Ron Polk is an outstanding coach. Hats off to the young man who committed to Miss St.

Agree with you 100%...Best major college baseball atmosphere in America. Fans that know the game; Left Field Lounge; and (for the younger guys) pretty Southern belles. Had 13,800 there yesterday for the game against Georgia.
