The following was posted in a Baseball America article about the WWBA:

"Friday was much bigger as games started promptly at 8 a.m., forcing scouts to head to the fields with the sun barely above the horizon. The Dallas Tigers took on the Kentucky Baseball Club in one of the best of the 8 a.m. games. The Tigers featured several Texas prospects, including a few guys from Coppell (Texas) High, a strong candidate for the preseason No. 1 spot of our national high school rankings."

Looking at Coppell's booster club website, the school has 6 college commitments thus far:

Austin Elkins - IF - DBU (2008 Dist. 6-5A Offensive Player of Year)
Zak Hermans - P - Princeton (2008 Dist. 6-5A MVP)
Chad Kettler - RHP - OU (ranked #74 in Baseball America's list of Top 100 HS Prospects)
Jacob Morris - OF - ASU (ranked #58 in Baseball America's list of Top 100 HS Prospects)
David Walsh - OF - UTA
Jonathon Walsh - C - UT (ranked #34 in Baseball America's list of Top 100 HS Prospects)
It seems every time I post the topic gets dropped so let's hope that happens again.

All I can tell you is that these boys love to play ball. The coach wants them to have fun and enjoy baseball.

In fact Coach English just asked them all to take some time off from baseball because he thinks it isn't a good thing that baseball has become a 12 month sport.

District 6-5A is and has been a very competitive district and the fields are all made of dirt and grass. In fact last year Southlake knocked Coppell out of the playoffs, in a 6 team district and with 4 teams going to the playoffs it is possible that 2 very good teams will be on the outside looking in.

As for the players on the Cowboys, they have a great senior class that will perform well but for them to go far in the playoffs they will need some help from the Juniors and some Sophmores (Toth).

Every year someone has to start the year on top of these polls. So instead of knocking there place or what some people think about the team please tell us about the other teams so we can enjoy watching them play.

So FD - who do you have on the team that has committed to a D-1 or should have or will contribute to a winning season at Marcus?

Dillon, (Dillon might be the most positve poster on this site) please tell us about Lamar Consolidated and some other teams that will compete to get to Round Rock.

Hi Lamar, what about Lamar, they had a good club last year, what do they have coming back?

But make no mistake about it the Coppell Cowboys and the coaching staff know the expectations are high and they have high expectations or themselves. They will show-up for all three district games against the other 5 district teams. God willing they will win more than the lose and make the playoffs. As for being a potential #1 team in the country, if they show up to play and play like they love game they might turn into something special. Either way I am looking forward to watching them try and I beleive the players and the coaching staff will give it their best effort.

So what other teams match up to Coppell and why?

First, I agree, 2 very good teams from this district will not make the playoffs. They could probably make the playoffs in just about any other district.

We have 1 player that will probably sign with a D 1. If/when he does, I'll post it on here. We have 6 more that will get offers from JUCO's in the next couple of weeks (hopefully) and a few of them have an outside shot at a D 1 later in the season. Have a couple of Juniors and 1 sophomore that are definite D 1 prospects.

You are right, someone has to be pre-season #1. Someone has to wear the bull's eye. This year, it's Coppell, last year all we heard about was Colleyville Heritage. People will get on here and take shots at them. People will get on here and say how unbeatable they will be. Regardless, I think we'll go ahead and show up to play them all three times this year and see what happens. We have nothing to lose, I mean, they "should" beat us all 3 times...right? Wink

Bottom line is, we are talking about 16, 17, 18 year old KIDS. You never know what can or will happen between now and February, March and April. Pre-season rankings are for nothing but message board fodder. Last time I checked, everyone this year is 0-0. The only ranking I care about come out the night of May 1.

We will try to be as prepared as we can to play the great folks in our district.
Hey... it's why they play the game... but I think it is great for state/area to get recognition of great kids...

I remember Abilene Cooper of late 80's... won state in 87, 88 and never even lost a game in playoffs.. was prob #1 team in country as far as USA Today was concerned.. In regional semi-finals had FW Southwest down one game to none... leading in bottom of seventh of game two...Southwest with two on and two outs and a kid dropped a bomb... came back Saturday and beat them again.. went on to beat a Clay Gould led Arlington High in Regional Finals (who had just knocked off a great Lubbock Monterrey team)... Southwest went to State and lost in first round to SL Dulles - who ended up winning state...

Just meaning that Abilene Cooper finished well away from the championship that year and they were loaded and two time defending state champ... too many good teams in Texas!!

Bring on the season!
Diablo,

I played against those Cooper teams that won state. In 1987, we were "supposed" to face them in the regionals but were upset in the 2nd round. We had 4 D 1 guys, 7 starters back from a team that only lost 1 in the regular season the year before.

We win Game 1 of the area round and go up to Denton High for Game 2. We are up on those guys 10-1 going into the Bottom of the 7th and give up 10 runs to lose it...series tied. We had a guy on 3rd in the 5th and 6th for the run rule, but our coach pinch hit for our starters. Next night, we lose and get knocked out. We had been scouting Cooper all season, threw a JV pitcher against them in a tournament as they threw Jason Satre ( high pick of the Reds ).

OU assistant Tim Tadlock was on that Denton team. Everytime we talk he brings up the "miracle game" or at least that's what they call it in Denton. I can't print on here we we called it! TAMU-CC head coach Scott Malone was a Sophomore on that Cooper team coached by his dad Andy. Scott likes to kid around about the series that we "never" played. Scott Pugh, head football coach at Granbury, was their 1B. Boy he could hit! He was pretty salty playing for those Longhorns too!

Ahhhh...memories!!!

Thanks A Cowboy Fan.

Here's a quick rundown on Lamar Consolidated who is loaded for a run to Round Rock. They have potentially the best outfield in the nation in high school baseball. Randal Grichuk is the headliner as an Aflac All-American and U. of AZ commit. Brady Rogers is a front line RHP. Cody Robinson is a D1 outfielder that looks like a pro ballplayer. And their #3 outfielder is one of the top 2010 OF prospects in Texas in Cody Abraham.

I'll do a little more homework on local teams to give you my rundown as the season gets closer.
