I hope it's all an overreaction. But there are experts talking about these epidemics having exponential growth. You can see for yourself at the link below that since March 1 the number of cases has doubled every 3-4 days. Looks like we'll be around 1,000 cases by the end of today. If the growth rate persists -- and that's a big if, obviously -- you're looking at a quarter of a million cases by early April, and a truly scare number by May. If the mortality rate is _just_ 1% -- another big if -- that's a lot of damage.
Son’s high school is closing Friday the13th for planning purposes. Miami, Ohio has suspended face to face instruction til 4/12/20. There was no mention of Varsity athletics. The dorms and food service is staying open for those students that want/need to stay on campus. (That seems counterproductive).
Yes, counterproductive (unless you don't want to have to give credits/refunds for housing/food).
Indiana University has also gone online-only after spring break, for at least 2 weeks. Dorms and food staying open - I think that's how it has to happen everywhere, counterproductive or not. Most schools can't afford to give back all that room and board, never mind the lawsuits that will come about tuition, when people claim that online instruction is not what they paid for (entirely true). IU says athletics will be governed by whatever the Big Ten decides to do.
TPM posted:TPM posted:As of today in US, there are 700 reported cases in 36 states. 27 deaths reported.
Make that 773.
We can’t trust those numbers. They don’t have enough tests to even test all the workers who are working at the assisted living facility in Kirkland where they had all those deaths. They’ve simply put some of them on quarantine at home and said “let us know if you develop a fever over 103”. I’m not joking. They are only testing the ones who are still working. I struggle to find the rationale there.
The link I posted has it at 971 right now. NYTimes has it at 955.

Has the NCAA weighed in on any waivers or eligibility issues for players who have their seasons cut short?

I don’t think they’re there yet.

I was at a Cactus League game today and it was packed, close to 90% of the seats were occupied and the lawn was 3/4 full. Only concern or modified behavior I saw was a line to wash your hands in the restroom and the soap dispensers were running dry. People seemed to be coming in to wash hands without having used the facilities.
On a baseball note, the Cubs rocked Johnny Cueto, 9 hits and 5 runs in 1 2/3 innings. In contrast to Cueto's shenanigans on the mound, a large percentage of the pitchers from both teams pitched from the stretch exclusively. Seems the windup is going out of fashion.
Just got word from my son that Cal Tech now has a confirmed case of Corona. Also Pomona-Pitzer is on lock down. His school will be announcing plans tomorrow.

Oh, damn.
What does that mean, lock down?

His words....I'm assuming they have closed campus and/or asking kids to leave. Not sure. Its all changing so fast.
UMD closing down until at least 4/10
Iowa board of regents has asked all three of our public universities to present plans for online education by Thursday (spring break is next week). Our director of public health where I live near Des Moines said today that she expects the virus to be widespread in our community of 16,000 within the next couple of months, but says we also need to go back to our basics — wash your hands, cough into your elbow, stay home when you are sick, etc. While a lot of what is coming from leaders is scary, the folks here are making me feel like they know what they are doing.
Sadly, several of our senior care facilities are on lock down, separating nursing home residents from their families for the forseeable future.

Just based on gut reaction and various pieces of intel I think the 5 C’s and SCIAC will shut down after Spring Break, but the current Pomona lock down is not that big a deal.

Basketball adjustments due to Wuhan Virus. They are still allowing family to attend the games. So maybe baseball has a chance...
Wechson just posted on another thread that NECSAC has cancelled all spring sports.
All whistles will be banned from Vanderbilt home games, until further notice!
UVA moving to online classes for the foreseeable future and cancelling all in-person classes. University events with more than 100 people are prohibited, and should be cancelled, postponed or offered virtually. So far no sports have been cancelled:
"Athletics and events at the John Paul Jones Arena, however, will move forward as planned for the time being, according to the university, but restrictions "remain under discussion and consideration."

Ivy league just unanimously cancelled all spring practices and competitions through end of academic year.
D3 Illinois Tech just canceled their California trip so my son at Caltech won't be playing them this weekend. Wesleyan canceled last week. They'll probably scrimmage Claremont Mudd Scripps in a Sunday DH to makeup. Caltech is having a meeting today at 4:30 Pacific for all Spring athletes so we'll see what they say. Caltech is supposed to take a trip to Seattle and Portland during their break the last week of March. As of now it's still on, but Seattle of all places??? Only a matter of time before that trip is canceled. We're supposed to go out to visit him during HS Junior son's Easter Week break but Caltech is weighing remote instruction for their 3rd term starting that week. So much up in the air right now!

Someone mentioned that Cornell and Princeton are #2 & #3 in the nation in Lacrosse, and that it's like telling SCC that 'Bama and LSU's football season is over.
Not surprisingly, everyone is talking about a blanket hardship waiver from the NCAA... except for the NCAA. Jeez, make some kind of statement, already!
Son's season is almost certainly over, but they haven't told them yet. I wish they would get it over with. Long term, I think one of two things is going to happen:
- the virus is really bad with lots of deaths, so that we look back and think "how could we have worried about cancelling a few games?"
- the virus ends up being not that bad, maybe partly because of all the cancellations, then we look back and say, "why did they have to cancel everything? it wasn't that bad"
On the whole, I think I prefer the second option to the first.
With the lead doctor from the CDC saying it’s going to get worse before it gets better I’m thinking spring sports are in serious trouble of being continued past this week.
I believe the only thing between playing and not playing the NCAA basketball tournament is a big bucks tv contract.
Yep, you wonder if the NBA will do their playoff in empty arenas and MLB will have Opening Day open only to Friends and Family. They can keep themselves afloat on TV money even if they're refunding ticket sales and not selling beer.
Right????
The Big 10 Conference just announced no fans allowed at any sporting event for the remainder of spring seasons. This would include baseball.
"Additionally, all further Big Ten Conference winter and spring sport competitions, including championship/tournament events, will also be limited to student-athletes, coaches, event staff, essential team and Conference staff, TV network partners, credentialed media, and immediate family members of the participating teams.

Immediate family members matters to me. Not my favorite decision but much better than flat out cancelling the season. It leaves open the option of opening things back up if that's possible later in the season, or shutting it down further if that's what's required to keep people safe.
NBA just suspended all games as player has tested positive for Covid-19.
No doubt athletes in all sports are going to start testing positive, too.
Son's college baseball season is done. All students being sent home by next week, to complete classes online. Honestly, I don't see how they are going to get up the motivation to participate in those classes once they are home.
There are no tests to test anyone, that is the issue. One can have the virus and present no symptoms. If you have symptoms, and test negative to the regular flu, you go into quarantine.
I think it may time to start burning witches. Sound logic right?

Caltech DOES NOT have a confirmed case of Coronavirus. They had someone who was being tested and the test just came back negative. Not trying to be contrarian here, just important to be factual when so much drama is going on out there.
Son is on staff at a mid-major D1... the school has sent all students home except athletes. He says it's very strange on campus. And the town is definitely a college town, so sort of a ghost town now as well. At this point, I would be surprised if the other shoe didn't drop soon and they called it a season. He said on the plus side, the local bars are offering 1/2 off Corona's
