Eerie isn't it?
"Build it...and they will fly."
Just like last year and the year before, the playoffs and WS will be a crapshoot and the Cubs have a 1 in 8 chance of winning it all.
If we are fortunate, the Cubs will roll a lucky 7 just like the Cards last year and the sox the year before. It no longer means much to be a dominant team in the regular season.

The Cards "got hot" and weren't the "best" team all season.
The Sox lead wire to wire, had the most wins that season, and were the dominant team. Don't compare the Sox WS win to the Card, it is not the same thing.

Sox finish and post season in 05 was superb.
Cards got hot and extremely lucky in 06.
cubs finish was ok like the rest of 07.
Marmol has been "lights out" until very recently.
Z has shown his "down side" until very recently.
With only 3 days rest before his next start, Piniellas's decision to remove him was correct.
Lou's bad decision, in retrospect was not having Z bunt the man over to 3rd in his 3rd AB. That successful SAC would have resulted in a run.
On the flip side, he was the only 1 hitting the ball hard off of Webb.
Thats baseball!....darned if you do,etc.

Sox, agree with your comments. If he had left Z in the game and had given up a couple of runs, everyone would be asking "why didn't you bring in Marmol?" Bottom line, they only scored 1 run.
You guys follow the Cubs more than I do, but I thought Zambrano should have gone at least one more inning if not two.
I understand the reasons behind taking him out, but here are the reasons he should have stayed in IMO
1 - Zambrano was throwing well and his history shows he is somewhat of a front runner. (don’t mean that in a bad way) but when he’s good he is extremely good, when he’s not so good he can be extremely bad. Last night he was good! He was everything you could ask for.
2 – His pitch count was 85, with a quick 7th inning, he could have easily gone 8.
3 – Saving him for another start/win doesn’t make sense in a short playoff. One win is one win whether it is this one or the next one. The first game away from home is a real huge one. What if they lose three in a row?
4 – Probably not that big a deal, but he was the Cubs best hitter last night and would have hit one more time.
5 – Marmol has had a great year, but hasn’t he been fairly average at best, late in the year? Why not ride the horse when he’s having a good day and hope you score and take a giant advantage in the playoffs. Cubs need to win 3 out of 4 now, hope Zambrano gets another chance and hope he’s as good as he was last night. If that does happen, I bet they won’t take him out after 85 pitches in a 1-1 game.

I see your point, however, what if:
Zambrano throws 8-10 pitches and walks 2. Lou takes him out. He has a tantrum and everyone suffers.
This was entirely possible.
Meanwhile, Marmol has been almost invincible, even with a couple runs given up lately his ERA is unreal.
In my mind Lou did not want to take him out in the middle of the 8th. Had the pitch count gone to 100+ he's probably got 5-6 innings at best on saturday. His psyche is so fragile that Lou wanted to keep things positive.
After Z,Lily and Marmol, they are done.
Imo, Lily must win or it's over.
Soriano,Lee and Ramirez must provide offense as well or it's over anyway!
They will not beat Webb at home in a game 5.

As usual, Soxnole is correct. The bunt was in order, and is the only decision to second guess. But, as several of you said, if Z was swinging the best bat, you don't take the bat out of his hands with a sacrifice.
I have seen over 150 games this summer between my son's games and the pros. Teams that score one run rarely rarely win. The manager could do very little about that. A stud pitcher beat the Cubs by pitching well. Again, not the manager's fault. My son kept commenting on how every pitch Webb threw was crooked. Nasty stuff to hit.

After 6 innings the best pitcher in that game was Zambrano. Both in actuallity and statistics and both teams had scored only one run at that time.
IMO opinion you play game one like you play game seven. It is that important, especially in a short five game series.
Don't the Cubs have to win one or Zambrano throws 85 pitches in the "series"?
Boston didn't take Beckett out even with a 4-0 lead. That is because they know how important game one is and like Zambrano, he was lights out that game.
Just my opinion, maybe it will work out that game one wasn't that important.

If, and it's a big if, the Cubs reach a game 5, I seriously hope they won't throw Lilly again. I've never seen a pitcher in such a big game get so rattled. He was overthrowing from pitch one and had absolutely no composure on the mound last night. Lou should have gone and got him after he launched his glove after the home run. That was one of the most humiliating actions I've ever seen by a pitcher. It reminded me of Tanner Boyle in Bad News Bears.
Agree, Coach IU26....
Definitely "high school Harry" stuff.
I was waiting for him to run to mommy for his hot dog and pop.

Rosy? 'Forlorn' party of one. Rosy? Your window seat back to Chicago is ready.
Has anyone seen or heard from FastballDad??
Maybe he is still working on a comparison between the 05 Sox and the 0h! 7 FLUBS!
3 and out in the nlds.
How about that young former Seminole, Steven Drew!
He hit Z and Lily like he knew what was coming!
