Tonight I was driving home from work listening to the game on the Stanford radio station.
So, get this.
David was a walk on who didn't pitch an inning as a freshman but became a major contributor each year after that.
As much as anyone, David seems to epitomize this team. Under-appreciated but performs on the field and mound at a very high level.
So what you ask.
Well, on the radio, they announced David also has the highest GPA of any player in Omaha. David graduated from Stanford with a cumulative GPA of 3.92. I'm not sure my GPA was that high when you added all 4 years I was in college.
Spectacular.
I remember Bordeaux, David's Mother, posting about his major. I couldn't even spell it but it was very clear...most of us are not going there.
David Stringer is such a wonderful role model for everyone on this site. We have had the pleasure of watching him the last 4 years at Sunken.
There is little doubt David will play a role in changing some aspect of this world we live in, and in a very important way.
What a story. What a great young man!
Please join me in congratulating David and his family on a terrific and courageous baseball career at Stanford.
More importantly, for anyone who says being a student athlete is such a tough road, well, David Stringer lived his dream as a walk on, excelled in the classroom, and is an example of this Stanford team which is now in the final 4 of college baseball.

'You don't have to be a great player to play in the major leagues, you've got to be a good one every day.'

A wonderful young man with a wonderful mom; I met Bordeaux through this board, my wife and I met her in person when David played Valley League baseball in the summer, and we continue to trade e-mails to this day about baseball, college kid trials and tribulations, and lawyering. It's a very pleasant coast-to-coast friendship that grew out of the hsbaseball web.

When David was a freshman, I was told by a part-time scout that "with a tad more velocity, he can make some real money in this game". I suspect free agent calls will roll in after Stanford finishes in the World Series, hopefully with a title. Let's see if they can out-bid the business world that will pay dearly for a guy with his smarts.

This is one absolutely bright and wonderful young man, modest almost to a fault, but brilliant in every way.

True story: David's first day with Woodstock in the Valley League, they turned a nifty double play and he used a "Stanford education word" to describe it. The whole dugout almost in unison turns to him with a collective "huh?"

Good guys do win!

p.s. and his mom has sent some great camera phone pictures from Omaha, but talk about envious....

I believe his primary major was Computer Engineering and his second major was Mathematics Eek Imagine that, a dual major at Stanford while playing baseball and a huge GPA to go along with it

I have had the pleasure of chatting with his Mom Bordeaux via PM and she is simply one of the nicest human beings I have ever met. She is very humble, smart, and down-to-earth. I am sure the apple does not fall far from the tree. I encourage people to send her a PM as it is a conversation they won't regret starting. All the best to David, team, and family!
Hokieone sent me an email alerting me to this thread. Thank you infielddad and all of you from the bottom of my heart, and also on behalf of David.

P.S. David also was elected to Phi Beta Kappa last month. His major was mathematics and computational sciences....it is a major which combines computer science, mathematics, and several other disciplines into one. It would be a very good major for someone interested in, say, management consulting or...a baseball front office, if anyone is listening! He has a head for statistical analysis that is uncanny. Combined with his love for baseball, hmmmm.....

The word was induce Wink...it isn't THAT big a word Big Grin.

Written like a true awesome mom! Big Grin

CONGRATULATIONS to your entire family!!
Thank you again to everyone here for your kind words and warm wishes! I'll keep you posted as to what he is up to next but feel free to keep in touch via PM if you want.

With 3 children graduating this year (two from high school, one from college), you can imagine that soon I will have a lot of time on my hands......although a lot of it will be devoted to making an income sufficient to help out with two college tuitions at once. Eek

The wonderfulness of the experience in Omaha is just beginning to sink in as the boys returned home this afternoon. The players are treated so incredibly well in Omaha and it is something they will carry in their hearts and minds for the rest of their lives!
