High school game !

1. Batter bunts the ball. Ball bounces up off the plate strikes runner in the helmet as he is running to first. Ball hits runner just in front of plate.

Ump: Foul Ball Reason: It was not intentional ?

2. Runner on 1st and 3rd with 2 outs. RHP in the stretch. Pitcher comes set and 1st base runner starts walking toward 2nd. Players scream steal and pitcher breaks to the runner without stepping of the rubber first and starts a run down. Runner at 3rd scores before the 1st base runner is tagged out. Inning over. Our coach goes out and argues balk.

Ump: no balk Reason pitcher has the right to make the play ?????

I think what the rule is in theory and what is called in practice are not exactly the same in this situation. In theory, any time a batter is hit by a ball in fair territory he is out. In practice, it is rare for a batter to be called out on this play even if he has started out of the box and is technically in fair territory. It's a bang-bang situation and most umps give the batter the benefit of the doubt.
1. Right call... Foul ball.

NFHS Rule 8 Section 4 Article 1 (official interp)

If a batted ball hits the batter while he has no foot entirely out of the batters box, the ball is foul, unless the batter interfered deliberately...

Your umpire nailed the call and the interpretation as well.

The batters box extends into fair territory which is crucial to this interp. Judgement on batters boxes and locations of the batters feet are the sole determination of the umpire...

# 2...... Balk. (the pitcher does have a right to make a play but he still must adhere to the pitching rules)

This is the problem with providing rulings based on what is posted. In many times, what is seen during the play is crucial information left out of the post.

But barring that....

keaton....nothing in the original post mentions a step towards third....it says he runs at the runner....and the play is made on the runner from first....so a step to third is unlikely...

racab....he is in the stretch postion....and has set his hands....there is no windup....

again all this is from the original post...more information might make this easier.
