My son, Jr class of 2011, wants to play college ball. Right now, I don't know if this will happen as he needs to fill out more physically and show that he has the motivation to do what it takes to become a college player. He has good skills, but I don't think he's ready to be seen by college coaches yet. We think he's too skinny to attend a showcase right now. If the goal is to play for a small D3 school, will he be at a disadvantage if we don't start contacting potential programs until after the Spring 2010 season?

jake,
the vast majority of DIII programs won't even start looking at 2011's until the Summer of 2010.
After doing their scouting from June to October, most will then start the major recruiting of players as the NLI signing day in November of 2010 is close at hand.
It doesn't do any good for DIII's to use their recruiting budgets and resources while most players are still looking at the levels above. Once the NLI signing day happens, those who were looking higher, and are disappointed, become more focused and what is truly available and the DIII coaches begin recruiting, in earnest.
Jake, my son is a 2010 who is a big boy but on the light side, too. We started sending out information to schools in the early summer, and we heard back from only a few DIIIs. Recently, however, my son has started hearing from many of the DIII schools that we contacted in June, so I am assuming that, like infielddad said, they are really starting to ramp up their efforts now. Good Luck to your son with the weight gain; easier said than done!
