12 yr, b/t- right, 3b,p,1b.of stopped his cathcing this season. Straight A' student
He and his travel team are off to cooperstown dreams park to compete. http://www.eteamz.com/browardblazeII
Would love to play for the U of Miami, and earn a degree in medicine, dreams of the pros but, realizes ther importance of a good education. Lets face it not everyone can make it but, it's great to dream and work hard.
Starr,
If he's good enough to start as a sophmore then playing at a Div 1 school will help. If he'll end up getting little playing time at a Div 1 HS it won't help. The differences in HS between a Div 1 school and a Div 4 school aren't as great as let's say the difference between a Div 1 college and a D3.

What level of travel ball is he playing? (i.e. USSSA majors, AAA, 13u, 14u?)

How does he compare to the rest of his team? (i.e. best, one of the best, average?)

If he's just turned 13 and has been clocked at 86 and cruises at 78 to 83 he should already have scouts looking at him and it doesn't matter one bit where he goes to HS. He also must have been one of the top 12yo pitchers in the nation last year and should have been in the running for or have won Baseball America's 12yo player of the year award.

To put what you've written in perspective, the pitcher who won the LLWS US championship game in dominating fashion last year was clocked at up to 74 mph. This year at 13 he has been clocked at up to 79 mph and is still one of the best 13yo pitchers in the country although much more hittable at 54'. Your son according to what you've written is in another class from a velocity standpoint. Sorry if I'm a bit skeptical.

Our district had at least 3 teams, possibly four or 5 stronger than Visalia. Only one of them had a 70 mph pitcher and they only used him three innings against Visalia where he struck out 8 in 3 innings. They only gave up two hits to Visalia in two games using mostly pitchers throwing less than 65 mph.

All I'm trying to say is that the velocity numbers you've posted are highly unlikely, although not impossible. You need to have somebody clock your son on a reliable radar gun before posting those kind of numbers.
I understand...Like I said, I am just going by what I am told...It might help to know also that he is 6' and 155...I think I am a single mom thats just getting overwhelmed with his baseball. He has been clocked by his pitching coach and also at a tourney. I would like to send you a picture of him but not really sure how to do it...My e-mail is casunlover63@aol.com...if you could e-mail me I will send you a pic. Everyone tells me that he needs to go to a division 1 school. In order to do this I would have to drive 40 miles a day to take him to school or he would have to stay 3 nights a week with his travelball coach.
Even if he isn't throwing as hard as you've posted he obviously throws pretty hard. That still doesn't mean he has to go to a Div I HS to get noticed. These days showcases, college camps, etc. can get players the exposure they need. I'd recommend going to the other parts of this site to find information on the recruiting process, showcases, etc. and then come back to the forums to ask questions of people who have been through the process (not me or mine as my son is only a few months older than yours though a bit smaller). You'll also find that there are posters on here who have been in similar situations coming out of a relatively small town, etc.
I agree, what a great website. I have spent all of my time at batspeed.com and baseball-excellance.com, but this gives them both a run for there money.

I too have a 12yo, just finished up his last year of LL majors and is into travel ball now. I have been absoultely amazed at how dedicated he has been the last 3 years, but it has totally paid off.

This year he hit .753 with an OBP of .856, he just hit his 18th HR and his 100th RBI on sunday. What makes me happier than all of that is the smile he has on his face while he is out there, especially when he is having a good day on the mound. He dreams of playing ball at Texas. Hook em Horns!

Wow, a 100 rbi's....
My son turned 13 a few months ago, 5’6”, 140 lbs. Not sure how it is everywhere else, but it seems like little league is a big deal around here, but there’s very little interest in pony league. My son hit over .600 in LL his last two years, but he’s shy and lost confidence this year in Pony while getting moved around to different positions (in the past 3 years, he’s played everywhere except 3rd) & trying to adjust to the level change. He’s been an LHP (peak around 60 mph), but he got very little work this year because his Pony team was mostly 14 yos & his team won the league. He’s willing to work hard, so I’m trying to open some more opportunities for him (e.g., finding a fall ball league about 40 min. from here, etc.) while boosting his confidence. So, I’m trying to learn everything that I should have when I played pony & hs ball. As a result, I’m very appreciative of these forums & everyone here.
You are dead on Pirate, there are a lot of great baseball minds in the world, forums like this are the perfect place to pick their brains. I know that is all tht I do, try to stay one step ahead of my boy.

I hope everything goes great for him in fall ball, hopefully it's 13U so he doesn't have to compete with the 14 year olds, but he will keep learning either way
I do. He's 12. New to baseball. This was his first season. He's fast! Quiet kid. Plays short stop, center field and catcher. He is also put in as a pinch runner when they need him. Dad and I are bit overwhelmed as he is already being approached by the high school baseball scouts who want to make sure he sticks with BB. They say that he has a lot of untapped talent and that he is "coachable."Anybody else out there experiencing this? Any suggestions? My son also plays basketball, s****r and football but baseball has become his all time love.
Yes,
My 12 yo boy has had coaches from 3 high schools watching him this year, but I take it with a grain of salt. I have seen a lot of stud 12yo who end up either not liking baseball anymore or end up not having the talent (or drive). Take it as a compliment, but I am sure that he has a lot of work to do between now and high school tryouts. Sounds like he is quite the natural athlete, that should help.

How does he hit?

Would he be willing to give up 1 or more of the other sports to emphasize baseball?

Why does he play S****r? Only teasing
My son is hooked on sports, especially baseball. He has studied it (books and tv), found older kids in the neighbrhood to help him practice (I throw like a girl -hee,hee and dad has a crazy schedule) and plays it every chance he can get. While dad was going through medical school, residency and beyond we found ourselves moving during baseball season, hence s****r. That is why he has never been able to join a team until this year. He hits fine,I think. The coaches have him bunt a lot because they know he'll get to base if he gets the bunt off. When he gets to swing he can knock the ball out far. At this point I don't think he wants to give up other sports to emphasize baseball. He thrives on sports and as long as he maintains an A/B average his dad and I tell him to go to town and tryout for anything he wants to. We are not looking for our son to be some super duper athlete - we'd rather have him own the team - this is all self motivated. I guess I worry about allof the attention from the scouts and coaches distracting him from what is important.

Update from my Jan 26th 2004 post.

In 2004 my 04 was 6'2" 175lb RHP and had just signed his NLI with a DI JC.......he is now 6'3" 190lb and this summer signed with a NCAA DI school and will start his soph season in a few weeks.

My 2010 in 2004 was a 5'9" 120 lb 6th grade RHP/1B .....he is now a 6'3" 145lb 8th grader RHP/1b that seems to have several more inches of height and alot of weight still in him.

For those of you going thru this baseball roller coaster for the first time remember to enjoy it as there most certainly will be ups and downs. Looking forward to getting back on the coaster for the ride with son No. 2
