If you are "Squashing the bug" with the rear leg, then it will be square with the rear foot. The front foot should land in a 45 degree angle, where the toes are pointed in the vicinity of the second baseman. If the foot stays closed, it puts undue stress on the knee joint that will eventually cause problems. It will also limit your hip turn. Your weight should also be on the balls of your feet in an athletic position.
If I am understanding right, you want you front foot at least parallel with your back, if not more closed. Opening up your foot( in your case pointing it at the pitcher) will make your whole upper side fly open and that is a big nono. I suggest closing your front toe( or turning it in) so that will minimize the chance of flying open and pulling off the ball.
It depends on how flexible you are. Griffey is fairly closed, but not completely. He was very flexible. Most hitters are somewhere between 30 and 45 degrees open. More than 45 degrees is probably not a good idea for most hitters because it tends to lead to opening up too early and pulling off the ball. However, if you are not flexible at all you may have to open more than 45 degrees to keep from locking up your hips.
Great feedback. When my foot is pointing toward the pitcher, yes, I do fly open a bit. When it's side is facing the pitcher, yes, there is discomfort in my knee. I'll try the 45 degree angle, if not, a little less.
