James River 10, Manchester 0, done after 5 innings.

Not a lot of tension in this one.  Mac Caples had 2 HR and 7 RBI in the game, and Jack Roberts threw all 5 without facing much of any threat.

JR came out more aggressive than they often are on the bases.  Harry Lee Watson had a leadoff single to short center, then JR immediately put on a hit-and-run.  Cullen Large singled sharply through the infield to right and it was immediately 1st/3d with no outs.  Caples bounced sharply to third but the presence of the runner there seemed to distract the 3B, E5 with an RBI and Large reaching third easily.  Jack Roberts then squeeze bunted Large across, and Stiebel Aleman's grounder later brought in Caples to make it 3-0 quickly.  Caples' 2-run shot in the third made it 5-0.  In the 4th, Butts left with 2 on and 1 out, and Jaxn Lane came in.  A walk to Watson and Large's bases-loaded single made it 6-0, Caples capped it off with a grand slam.

I would have to guess Roberts was glad for the short outing, made all the shorter by an aggressive game plan by Manchester that resulted in a handful of one-pitch outs and really no one working the count the whole game.  Roberts looked visibly fatigued at times, but in the end I don't know if he threw more than 55 pitches, so he should be good to go whenever the regionals start.

Two "fun facts".  First, this was JR's third game at Cosby this year, and they've scored 12, 10 and 10 in those games.  Might be a different story tomorrow, assuming Williams starts, though I would assume Williams would be pulled after 3 innings, after which it probably becomes a staff game for Cosby.  JR has White, McLellan and Griffin Roberts (no relation) as well as Caples all eligible and fresh.

Second, since Cosby opened with the 2007 season, the 2 district regional berths have gone to Cosby 7 times (i.e., they've made it every year) and to James River 5 times.  Manchester got the other 2 (2009-10) and no one else has made it out of districts since Monacan won the state title in 2006.  You have to wonder when that cycle will get broken.  But it won't be this year.
