I had the pleasure of watching Erik Davis pitch a complete game yesterday as Stanford beat OSU 6-2. After the game, I met JustBaseball, who had made the trip up to Corvallis with his family.

Erik is not only a terrific pitcher, he is a fine young man. He kept the OSU hitters off balance all day by changing speeds. It was a pleasure to watch.

And it was also great to meet Tom, after several years interacting with him on this site.

Congratulations Erik, Tom and your families!

Excellent!!! And it was Erik's third straight complete game.

Coach's comment:

"That was a great pitching effort by Erik Davis once again today," added Marquess. "I've been at Stanford a long time, and I don't know if I've ever had anybody pitch three consecutive complete games in their first three league starts. He really battled well today and came up big in big spots."

Way to go, Erik!
I'm really never quite sure whether or not to respond to these types of posts or not.

But let me please say THANK YOU! so very much for your kind words.

You have all been so kind over the past couple of years since Erik's accident. I am a firm believer in the power of prayer and you all provided plenty of that...and we, our family, and Erik are tremendously grateful for all of you. Wink

Obviously we are so very proud of what Erik has accomplished given the circumstances. It just all seems like icing on the cake. What a great hug after that game! Big Grin

And Rob, it was a TREMENDOUS pleasure to meet you in person...and your wonderful son and wife. We will keep our conversation going on the side and in the 30 minutes or so I got to talk to your son it was clear he is going to go to great places. What a terrific kid!

I hope we get the chance to talk in person, many times again!

Again, thanks everyone. May God bless every one of you!

Something that stands out to me in reading the game reports:

Erik can battle. He doesn't just do well when he is mowing down the side, he keeps himself together when he is in a tough spot, and finds a way to get the job done.

"Davis lost a bid for his first career shutout when he wild pitched home a run in the eighth but avoided a potentially bigger inning by striking out the side after the Bruins had loaded the bases with no outs on three consecutive singles by Brent Dean, Alden Carrithers and Jermaine Curtis to start the inning. Davis would strike out the side in order in the ninth to finish the game with six consecutive strikeouts."

That tells me something about this young man and his future.

Erik Davis' picture was featured on Baseball America a few days ago. He had on a set of athletic eyeglasses (someone post of who he reminds you of) and quite frankly he looks very intimidating right now. He is clearly pitching like an All-American.

For grins, he reminded me of the Cincinnati Reds third baseman a few years back who wore those type of glasses. I know justbb loved the Big Red machine Smile
One element not completely obvious from the boxscores is the tenacity that Erik has shown on the mound, and how his leadership and effort seems to have picked up his entire team.
Stanford has been missing one of it's weekend starters for several weeks. It probably is no coincidence that pitcher's injury correlates with this string of complete games from Erik.
When you look at this Stanford team, it is pretty much the same squad that last year failed to reach post season play and didn't have a winning record for the first time in several years.
They replaced two position players who went high in the draft with a freshman shortstop and third basement, who have been solid defensively but had the anticipated struggles with the offensive transition.
With all of that, Stanford is ranked #10 nationally, now, and should move up this week.
Erik Davis, in my opinion, is a premier example of what great senior leadership can mean to a college team. It is such a special situation when it happens and it sure couldn't happen to a player and family who are more deserving.
I'm looking forward to the weekend when USC visits Sunken Diamond.
