I hope all the MLB talk on this high school board doesn't annoy too many people. I heard an interesting idea on the radio (attributed to John Feinstien). Create an Ernie Banks Day where all the teams play a double header. Probably tough to pull off, but it would be a nice tribute.

Good call except Gwynn's love for the game wasn't as tested as Banks's. 20+ years without ever sniffing the postseason must have been tough on someone like him.

I say this with all sincerity: Last February I was at the opening day game of SDSU. Tony was there with his team at an away game and it was cool but not overly so.
He was dressed in a football type parka and appeared to have his entire jaw/head wrapped in some type of cloth bandage. Coaching his team because he really loves baseball and SDSU and being open and friendly knowing he was close to death...pretty compelling to me. Our son was a coach on the other side and said Gwynn appeared to be quite uncomfortable but as nice as anyone could be.
With this said, I am all for an Ernie Banks day. He was one of a kind standing alongside Mays and Clemente in the 50's and 60's. Banks and Billy Williams and Ferguson Jenkins, along with Santo and Hunt(gone way too soon) were such cornerstones of a Cubs era which was otherwise forgettable. Along the way, MLB might make up in some way for the huge gaffe last year when Gwynn was pretty much overlooked at the All Star game.

I always had a lot of respect for Gwynn. There are those guys whose career end and they walk away. Then there are those guys who love the game so much they couldn't pull themselves away from it if they wanted to.
Infield, I am with you 110% on MLB doing something to really honor Gwynn. I was kind of shocked that something really special was not done last year. Maybe they should take the time to honor those that are still alive from time to time.That should be one of the MLB channels goals. Especially to educate their younger audience.
