Have a question about whether kids should be playing in fall while doing offseason training. Son is a 9th grader, first year through school program. Baseball has pretty intense offseason workouts including medicine balls, weighted balls, weight lifting, speed & agility, & throwing program. Son has always played travel ball in past and normally will pick up with additional team as well as one he's played with for past few years. With two teams normally gets in four or five tournaments ending in early November. He's normally rested 6-8 weeks after spring season and same after fall & begins lessons after each break prior to seasons. This summer very short break due to school practices through the month of July. One of the teams he's playing for is a little more active than anticipated so he's played all but one weekend since late August. With school workouts, practice, and weekend tournaments along with homework he's exhausted. He's had a couple of nagging injuries this fall; tendonitis which he took a week off and recovered well. Last one is a pinched nerve in his back which he's taken off for past four days and seems fine. I'm not sure now whether to let him play anymore this fall, would be three additional tournaments after skipping next weekend. Is it better to stay away from playing in fall & focus only on training. Also he hasn't been able to do his lessons which he misses.

Athletes train all year.  If you stop, even for a week, you loose strength;  so train.  Having said that, you do need to be smart about what you train, when you train, and how hard you train, but you train.  Your son should discuss his fall ball activities with his strength/conditioning coach so that his training will mesh with his baseball activities.  My son is fortunate in that his strength/conditioning coach is his defensive line coach (football) and varsity pitching coach.  As a result, he has been able to refine his routine to complement the three sports he plays (baseball, basketball, football).  Right now he performs maintenance lifts for strength, is starting to kick in some cardio (for basketball), performing plyometrics (after his baseball games on Sunday and then Tuesday) for basketball (jump training), and flexability/ resistance band work for baseball.  You just have to be smart about what you're doing.
