FARMINGTON — John Michael Twichell stepped into the batter's box with two outs in the top of the seventh. His team was down 6-5 to the undefeated Midland (Ohio) Redskins.

If the Dallas DBAT Mustangs slugger didn't come through, his team was heading home. Catcher Abel Baker already had hit a two-out single to keep the Mustangs' Connie Mack World Series hopes on life support.

The fans on hand at Ricketts Park held their collective breath as Redskins pitcher Taylor Rogers delivered a first-pitch curveball. Twichell was expecting the pitch, and the echoing crack of his bat shattered the ephemeral silence.

Twichell didn't even see the ball that gave his team a miracle one-run lead soar over the fence in right-center field.
"I actually didn't see it, I was running. I just heard the crowd freakin' roar," Twichell said.

Mustangs pitcher Jake Feckley, who had entered in the fifth inning and held the Redskins at six runs, pitched a perfect seventh inning to preserve the win.

The Mustangs (3-1) built a commanding early lead, but the resilient Redskins kept chipping away. Midland (4-1) took the lead in the bottom of the fourth and it looked like they were on their way to their fifth victory of this year's CMWS.
But the never-say-die Mustangs instead handed them their first loss.

"We were very fortunate to have won this one. They had us," Mustangs coach Sam Carpenter said. "They had us. But a couple of kids stepped up."
Dallas started the game slugging.

Pitcher Kyle Turley hit a one-out double in the top of the first inning, and Preston Beck followed up with an RBI double of his own. Max Muncy, who had walked in between the doubles, scored on an Alex Yarbrough groundout.

A two-out throwing error by Midland pitcher Taylor Rogers allowed Beck to come home for the Mustangs' third run of the inning.

The vaunted Midland lineup quickly responded. Speedy right fielder Mason Williams led off with a triple, and then Deven Marrero belted an RBI double to nearly the same spot.

Turley issued a walk to Graham Saiko and allowed an RBI single to Dane Phillips before recording his first two outs on a double play. Turley continued to struggle with his command, walking Brian Goodwin and Conrad Gregor to load the bases. But he'd get Marcus Davis to ground out to end the inning.
The score was 3-2 Mustangs after a busy opening frame.

The hit parade continued into the second inning. Dallas shortstop Brett Doe led off with a single and Tyler Collins belted a double to put runners on second and third with no outs. Turley brought Doe home and moved Collins to third on a ground out to first base, and Muncy hit a sacrifice fly to score Collins for the Mustangs' fifth run.

This time, the Redskins weren't able to strike back. Turley settled in to pitch scoreless second and third innings.

The rain that had threatened since the early game between the Florida Legends and the Dallas Tigers finally began drizzling down in the fourth. Play continued despite the light precipitation.
The Mustangs tried to emulate the rain and continue pouring on runs. They loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the fourth on two singles and a hit batsman, but Rogers got Beck to ground out to stop the threat.

The Redskins saw the open door and walked right through it. They took the lead 6-5 in their half of the inning thanks to Marrero's two-RBI triple that scored Williams and Matt Reida and a two-run home run by Saiko.

Marrero finished 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and three RBIs, along with multiple slick defensive plays.

"The moral fiber of this team, the leader by example on and off the field, is our shortstop, Deven Marrero," Redskins coach Joe Hayden said.
Working with his first lead of the game, Rogers looked markedly more comfortable on the mound. He tossed a hitless top of the fifth.

Dallas reliever Jake Feckley entered the game in the bottom of the inning. He got the first batter he faced, Brandon Sedell, to ground out, but then allowed a double to Goodwin.

Feckley threw out Goodwin trying to steal third and struck out Gregor to keep Midland's lead at one run after five innings complete.

Neither team scored in the sixth, setting up a dramatic final frame. The late-inning loss was tough to stomach for the usually indomitable Redskins.
"You get down to the very last out and they get a scratch single and a home run. It bothers you. It hurts, it does," Hayden said.

The rally gave the Mustangs a second lease on CMWS life and a boat load of confidence heading into today's championship round. They'll play the Florida Legends at 5:30 p.m. for the right to face the Redskins in a winner-take-all championship immediately following the early game.
"A lot. All the confidence in the world," Twichell said.

The Mustangs aren't the only team with confidence. "There are three teams here, we've all had to rebound. We're here, we're in good shape. We had a tough loss. We're going to come out here and win a championship at (8 p.m.) tomorrow night," Hayden said.

Regardless of the outcome tomorrow, credit should be given to Cade, Shayne and Sam for the new idea implemented this summer. Some didn't think it was the right thing to do at the time. Look at the number of kids that have signed from the new organizational structure and topping it off with this, impressive!!!! Congrats Guys....took a chance and it paid off...

Now finish... I'd never leave you out either!!!

Nice tournament by both Dallas teams to finish 2nd and 4th. All 4 Texas losses came to the same 2 teams:

Midland beat Dbat 7-1, beat Tigers 8-5…Tigers +3
Florida beat Dbat 10-1, beat Tigets 11-1…Dbat +1

Difference is Dbat came back to beat Florida 5-3 to earn 2nd. Nice summer indeed for both Texas teams.

Tx-husker,

I thought your comparison above was a jab at a previous post. After reading your back and fourth with SWAC, I am getting the impression you weren't kidding with the +3, +1 post. Wish it were a joke so some one could come to your defense.

Not sure how you conclude the 2nd and 4th place teams didn't both do well with the 2nd place team doing a little better... better.

No arguement here. Both teams did well. Congrats to all teams who made it to Farmington especially our DFW teams.

Panther Dad,

Most of us have tired head from the silliness that comes from CMWS banter. The summer is over...Lets shut it down and focus on the important stuff...

1. Top LH hitting catchers from the panhandle.
2. Most bitter posters from east and west of I35.
3. Commitments from class of 2025

Its time to MOVE THE DRILL!

Smile

I'd like to add:
4) Incoming Freshmen that will be studs on their Varsity teams

TeamD -- I wish you wouldn't have added that one! Cool

These are two great teams that represented Texas. I had hoped for a DFW final. There are a few other good teams in the country too.

CONGRATULATIONS to DM. Congratlations to DT. angel

I was listening to the game when the announcer mentioned an email from KG....extolling the greatest show on earth....imagine that.

Drove home yesterday thankful that the biggest amateur show on earth for baseball had about 50 kids from Texas present out of 200 excellent players from all over the country. Unbelievable that much talent from one state. Freedom of speech and free enterprise reign, don't let Obamanation get the best of baseball. Dbat and Mustangs put their heads together with a little help from Catcher to do what the other guys have been doing for years(Redkins, East Cobb, etc..). It is a free country and they can do that, it is not a slam to other great organizations in the metroplex. I think from that standpoint it has been a great success in the first year. I also think we still have other great organizations to choose from that is why we live in America and all the others are trying to defect to get here.

I thought Dbat did amazing after the first defeat in the tournament to go all the way to the final--Hats off to their guys. It was a great venue wouldn't trade anything for it. It was fun to watch Baker, Beck, Brooks, Feckley and some of the other guys we have played with and against over the years as they each had a great tournament. Wishing everyone the best as they head off to perspective schools in and around the state.
Thankful for the Tigers and a great summer, lots of great players that will be fun to watch in the future-way to go Walsh on all tourney-well deserved.
