My son's school kicks off its league play this weekend.  They will average 3.5 games a week over the next 5 weeks.  With weather issues they could have a week with 5 days in a row of play.  This league has provide both finalists in the largest class in Illinois the last two years. Link to schedule here

The purpose of my post is to see how many games HS teams play per week around the country. Let me know.

3 games scheduled per week starting this week through the middle of May here in Oregon. Unless we have an unusually high number of weather delays, most teams don't play more than 3 games per week. Today's game has been moved to tomorrow because of weather.

Edit: 26 games max during the season, not including playoff games. The regular season runs for 7-8 weeks. This is for the largest classification in the state (6A).

Our mid-size league on the California Central Coast, where population is relatively sparse, recently changed.  We used to be two games per week with an occasional non-league game added in.  This year, they shifted to playing each of seven league opponents three times and most weeks now include three games.  Our league's public school sizes range from 700-2200 with most being on the smaller end of that scale.  Most teams get really thin in the pitching department by game 3.  I think this was a mistake.

Cabbage, did they change the number of games or just truncate the season?

Just guessing but I would think everyone in your section has to play the same number of games.

To the OP, another NorCal poster.  We play 2, sometimes 3, games per week with no more than 24 games per season, plus playoffs.

JCG, they took away the bulk of our pre-league schedule to make it fit within CIF Southern Section guidelines.  In the Southern Section, there are ways to cheat the max game system somewhat that everyone uses, like tournaments and Saturday DH's where you sorta get a 2-for-1 deal so we are sitting on about a 28 game schedule.

Teams have to report tournament games here. About the only wiggle room is in the 2 allowed scrimmages, which often go a lot longer than the standard 7 innings.

We have to report tournaments as well.  The loop hole is referring to is the following.  You can call 1 of your league rounds, "A tournament" and you could potentially pick up 7 more games.  Completely legal!

In VA it seems to flip between 2 and 3 games, but weather delays/rescheduling can make a week 1 game and 4 the next quite easily.

Yep.  When my son played HS ball it was 2-3 games per week.  I don't remember him ever playing 4 or more in a week - even if the weather forced postponements.  By rule VA season is 20 games max not including playoffs and scrimmages.

From last Friday thru this Saturday my son's old HS has 7 games scheduled in 8 days.  The season here in Ohio only runs about 5 weeks and they play 24 games.  Typically the weather will cause issues and the games will get pushed back.  Schedules are front-loaded knowing that they likely won't play them all.  The last couple weeks of the schedule only have a game or two  so that they can get the makeup games in.  So far, due to crappy weather, they've played 1 game out of the 7 that were on the schedule up to this point.

I-8 conference in Il.   5 weeks with 5 games. 1 week with 6 games.  3 weeks with 3 games. The 1st and last week will  have minumum of 3 games or more added(end of year) depending on team.Last year had a run of 21 out of 24. Couple out of run were make ups.I believe I posted about it over on Il. forum. Hc coach  notorisley known for abusing minor childrens arms.

Better have lots of pitchers on staff with that schedule!

That's one heck of a schedule.  Even my son's college teams (JuCo & D2) never played more than 5 games in a 7 day stretch.

Just looked again....10 games scheduled in first 14 days of the season.  We are a small school (D3 in Ohio) so anyone who can throw will get a shot if the weather cooperates (which it never does).  We typically only have 30 or so kids in the entire program (no freshman team).  When my son was in school, the AD wasn't big on rescheduling missed games so we just lost them...new AD is much better.  24 games is plenty with the size of program we have.

In 1A Iowa, our school season starts May 23rd. They play JV first (6:00pm) most nights with the Varsity game beginning around 8:00pm. They play nearly every week night and usually 2 games on Saturday. The season ends Mid-July. Our school has been lucky and made it to the State Tournament the past 6 years  - and played about 43-44 games each season.

What an interesting thread. It's eye opening to see how other parts of the country run their schedules. I thought we didn't have very many games in our schedule with 26, but I see a lot of states with even fewer. It really puts it into perspective when you think about the total number of games your son will play in his HS career. 100 games doesn't seem like many at all.

We usually play one doubleheader per week with the occasional single non-conference game in the middle of the week. Our schedule is due to geography and is not necessarily typical of Colorado. Our closest conference opponent is well over an hour away and the second closest is three hours away. So, we alternate years as home team. Colorado allows 18 games per season.

I also find it interesting that the warm weather states (TX, Southern CA) play relatively few games in comparison to states like IL.  Based on LionBaseball the TX baseball season has as many contests as the football season.

Just looked at my son's schedule that has been updated based on postponements and he now has a stretch of 10 games in 15 days.

My son's league also plays back-to-back games if they play the same opponent twice during the league season.  Do many other places do that?

We play either 2 or 3-game series with the teams in our conference. The conference is divided in half, so we play the teams in our section 3 times and the teams in the other section twice. For the 3-game series, those games are scheduled on M, W and F. For the 2-game series, there is usually one day separating them, so either M and W or W and F. All of our opponents are within a 30-minute drive, so travel is not really an issue in scheduling. Being from one of the wetter states, I am surprised that we have more games than TX.

Lots of double headers with two double headers a week not uncommon.  Also had a spring break tournament with 7 games in three days.  Got to see some new faces on the mound.  When area play rolls around, those games get spaced with 2 games per week so top two starters rotate.  Playoffs are best 2 out of 3 over a weekend and will play the following weekend if you advance.  Again, top two starters can get you through if you win first two games.  If you split, then you will need the third starter to pitch the deciding game.
