I am no expert, this is just my understanding from talking with two recruiting coordinators from D1s, in Texas and Oklahoma.

As you know, baseball athletic recruits are called "counters" and their aid is based on equivalencies. The minimum athletic aid a counter can receive is 25%, "athletic" money. Both schools told GED10 his athletic aid would be reduced in percentage, based on his academic aid. In other words, if he received athletic aid at 25% and earned academic aid at 30%, he would not get 55% aid, the athletic aid would go back into the baseball program. This may not be criteria in all schools in the state or any other state, just those specific schools.

Hope that helps... GED10DaD

The answer is yes, you can have scholarships from athletic, academic and grant sources, all to be counted separately, if you meet at least one of the aforementioned requirements. If you don't meet at least one of the requirements, all the aid will be counted against the athletic budget. I have seen, in circumstances like that, where the coach will tell you, "You are going to receive XX% scholarship, and no more", and not allow the student to receive the other aid offered. The reason, is that if he allowed it, it would cut into his scholarship budget.
There is no rule that says this, assuming your son meets the requirements mentioned above. This was just a couple of coaches hoping to save athletic money because of your son's grades. It is a sad fact that sometimes good grades and SAT's will actually result in a kid being offered LESS athletic money.

I think this really depends on the college. My son receives an athletic scholarship, an academic scholarship from the school, and an outside academic scholarship. As long as he maintains at least a 3.0 the academic money won't count against the baseball team.

Obviously, good questions to ask the coach when considering that school.

Of course, that is for maintaining academic qualification after qualifying initially in at least one of the four aforementioned categories as an incoming freshman. (Just trying to maintain clarity Smile)

The above seems odd. The kid gets penalized for having good grades? In the scenario above does he not have to get at least 25% athletic money? Or would he now get none and only the 30% academic money?

The rule is, that if you get any athletic money, it must be at least 25%. He can receive no athletic money, but any amount of academic money, and that is ok.

Correct; so the player (GED10) gets good grades and now does not get any athletic money. Just seems strange - is this normal for a school to do?

A local D1 Private school here told the kids on my sons team the only way they can compete against public schools is for the player to get good grades. If the coach can combine athletic AND academic monies he (the coach) can compete against a public schools offer.
Some schools do that. My son had a school that was recruiting him, and when he found out my son was an academic qualifier for non counted academic aid, we asked him about that specifically, if the academic aid could be added above the athletic offer. His response was, "maybe I'll let him keep it". I thought it was strange too.
