bkeks, there are some retail products for catchers that are pretty decent - the one that comes to mind is "plam-guard"
some catchers will form a hard cast-like guard with the help of their trainer
fungo might remember the product name commonly used
AK, catchers can take a beating and without some help from some kind of guard bad brusing never gets time to heal in season and will just keep getting worse - I have an x-ray hanging on the wall of a hairline thumb break that lingered all season until discovered later
In the latest issue Collegiate Baseball has an article about the hand trauma that catchers can get. As long as you can maintain the feel, I don't see a downside to some type of padding for catchers. JMHO.
Like Bee> said, Palm-gard is a good one. Another is 'Glove Sponge'. My son, a catcher, has been using one recently, and says it really helps. I got his at a local sporting goods store. The only large mail-order company that I have found that has them available is Anaconda.
