It is definetly a money grab, by the big, rich and powerful that are strong arming the smaller schools and conferences. This is a situation where the Govt should step up and demand fairness and equal treatment for all.

High schools have playoffs, Div 1-AA, Div 1, JC they all have play offs, even the NFL has a play off.
College basketball and baseball have a huge play off, with conference tournament winners advancing into the NCAA Championship. I would think football would interfer less on school than basketball does with games on school nights, and the NCAA Tourny last 1 month.

I hope Congress does stop the BCS so called championship and that a true play off gets initiated. Hopefully conference champions get automatic bids.
As much as I would love to see a playoff, the government has it's hand in enough. They should not be regulating sports now. Unless we want all sports to go away due to huge deficits. As stated in other threads, some colleges are already trying to cut sports due to budgets. With the govt. involved, it can only get worse!

See Hillsdale College, Minnesota.

One of the theories of the rising cost of college is the colleges feel no matter what they charge the government will help subsidize it. Guess where the government money comes from. Therefore everyone is paying for college whether or not they have a kid attending or not.
Isn't the government just a little busy at the moment? Wars, high unemployment, getting TARP monies distributed and then returned, budget deficits.....?

In addition to sticking the government's nose where it doesn't belong....this seems like just another distraction away from what they are trying to do - pass a very unpoular healthcare bill?

That's what Herbstreet said on the radio this morning, he doubts the gov't will ever get involved in telling anyone they have to have a playoff system in place, but they will try to go through the motions as it will make some people happy.

Hillsdale College is in Hillsdale, MI.

From their website:

"Hillsdale’s educational mission rests upon two principles: academic excellence and institutional independence. The College does not accept federal or state taxpayer subsidies for any of its operations."

I find it ironic that the bill's sponsor is Republican Rep. Joe Barton of Texas, a member of the party that favors limited government.

Jimmy, exactly what in his proposal means more government? The new legislation would bar the BCS from referring to its big final game as the national championship, require that all conferences be considered equally in the current ranking system, and distribute television revenue and other income equally among all conferences. And, it would probably add the BCS lobbyists to unemployment statistics.

I agree! While we're at it let's eliminate Carter's Education Department! What an albatross this has become. Do a little research on Kevin Jennings - the Safe Schools Czar.

Uh, sounds a lot like redistribution of wealth (socialism) to me. Exactly why the govt. should not get involved in something like this. A little bit here, a little bit there and we are no longer a capitalist society.
May not make the government bigger per se. But it is just the government getting involved in another area of our lives that is not necessary. Every little bit they get involved in takes a little more away from our personal liberties and reinforces the idea that it is OK for the government to be involved in too many areas of society. So, not bigger, but more entrenched.
