Hi everyone,

We're just getting into this college/high school transition thing. We've been monitoring this site for about a year and have come to respect its followers opinions. Our boy has talent as a pitcher and we are looking for the right school. Is High Point U a candidate if the eventual plan is to be a MLB player. Do "they" watch this level of D1. We believe our son could contribute to their program therefore we are considering the possibility as they will likely give him more mound time as a freshman then higher level D1s. Sorry for the run on sentences...

The truth is level of competition does matter the leading D1 HR hitter is thought not to have a major league swing but also has the knock that he has not faced consistently high calibre pitching due to the conference that he plays in according to an article in BA. That being said my son signd with Highpoint not because of where they are but where we thought they would be.If your son went to HPU his first game would be Miami. That is a pretty big stage. If you can get to Omaha you will be noticed.I think coach Bando has a recruiting network that can do it.
if your son has the goal of being a big league pitcher, then he should go to a school that has agood record of developing pitchers. He should look at coaching staff, level of competition, and playing time. Of these I would rank coaching staff most important. Does the coach have big league or minor league experience? What has been his track record in developing pitchers who have been drafted? Do players get better under his program or just get by on ability? How competitive is the program? Do they have a track record of achievement? Will your son get a chance to play as a freshman or do freshman either redshirt or sit in their first year?

I disagree with justafan that the stage is important. It is only important if you are redy to take advantage of it. Scouts will come to see you even if you are playing UMBC if they are interested in you.(no offense to UMBC)

Please also take time to look at the school. Not everyone makes the next level. Injuries, ability, and interest can change over the course of 3-4 years. Make sure to get as good an education as possible. Make sure you like the school even if you aren't playing!

Spend some time researching other schools and conferences. What other programs are you considering. High Point does not have the best track record for what you are seeking.
VaDad

We all look at all aspects of a school we all try to be as ready as we can when we take the stage or the opportunity presents. You and I both agree that Highpoint has not in the past been a top calibre program. Where we part company is our perception of what the future will bring.I believe there is stong evidence that the university is making a substantial commitment to the baseball team and I furthur believe that Coach Bando as he becomes more established will take the program to the national level . Solid HS recruiting this year augmented by JUCO transfers.Only time will tell if we bet on the right horse but I would be careful to be dismissive as to where this program is headed.
with what is coming in to highpoint next year, should bring the program
from the outhouse to the whitehouse.they have a number of high profile players who have turned down some big schools to go with coach bando.
one of the reasons is the background that coach bando and his family have
in pro ball.
this years club has very few players that will see the field next year.
many are carryovers from when bando took the job.the new players coming
in will be one the best class's.there are some guy's helping bando to get
these top kids[both j.c. and h.s.].
seems that va. dad has an ax to grind.you can't play for a better guy
than bando.is it possible your son[va.dad]is a catcher and they backed
off him to take someone else?
they'll beat coastal and winthrop next year and go to the regional.
also,great schedule next year.miami,oklahoma st.,u.n.c.,duke,wake,va.
tech,east carolina,to name a few.
the difference between a good program and a bad program is just one thing,
good players.they are carrying the old cubs banner at highpoint[wait till
next year]and that's a fact.
thank you.

thank you
Question to YOBO???

What makes you so positive about High Point? Previously you have been talking about all this talent that they signed, and now you are SO confident that none of the current players will be around to play next year. Awful bold!!!!

High Point has a beautiful campus, and I am not trying to bash the program either...I just can't believe that they will change that much. Recruiting is only the start, and just because he is a hot prospect doesn't mean he will be successful. GA TECH, is historically rated extremely high in recruiting. Last year preseason #1, didn't do so hot...this year ranked at the top again...with several all-americans, and Team USA players...Where are they Ranked today??? Dropped out completely as of today!!!

Va Dad just stated some questions that you should ask in making a decision where to go, and offered what the program had done in the past...not the future. My son will be playing ball and attending school in the Big South next year, and he is quite happy with his decision. School size, Campus, Location, Coach, plus more, all played a big part in his decision. I would say the feel he had for the coach was the final deciding factor...Not if the program was at the top of the conference.

High Point may be the team to beat in the near future, but right now Coastal, Winthrop, Birmingham So. will have alot to say. Charleston Southern too falls into that category, they play a pretty good schedule too.

Good luck to High Point, Akuna...with his decision, and justafans son at High Point.
that's partly correct,kid.i put a team together
for one tournament in oct.and one in july.i don't coach anymore in the summer though.
yes, some kids who have played for me did sign with highpoint and there will be a few more before sept.rolls around.more than 80 players
that played for me are playing college ball now
and some are big time players.
it is true that there is no guarantee that a kid will produce at the next level.many fall on
there face.it is also true that coastal, winthrop
and birm.southern are the teams to beat and the last two have good talent going forward.however,
it is also true that the players coming in to highpoint are high profile players that have performed well where ever they played.he has put together a great blend of j.c.'s,h.s.,and
transferes[5 h.s.pitchers,4 j.c.pitchers,3 inf.,
2 1b,1 catcher, and 1 o.f.]and yes,i do[guarantee]they will win the conference next year.i think i have the right to voice my opinion with the amount of talent i have sent to the next level.

thank you,
