Recently some posters have asked about the future for their high school freshman baseball player. I'm curious what size poster's kids were as high school freshman. My son was a JV player freshman year. That summer he played 16u as a 14u eligible (May birthday). While he could play his physique wouldn't have impressed anyone.

As a freshman: 5'11", 135

As a senior: 6'1", 170

College: 6'2", 195

2019Son is 5'11", ~145 lbs. Skinny. Ending up where your son is size-wise would be a good result for my son. At the median boys grow on average about 3.5" and gain about 35 lbs. from 14-18. Clearly a lot of variability, though, and also one of the many, many items out of the parents' control (other than shoveling plenty of food son's way).

As a HS Freshman, son was a starting SS on Varsity and was also a RH pitcher with velocity in low to mid 80's. As a HS Senior he continued to play SS though his pitching velocity increased to where he sat at low 90's and could often touch 93.  His size. . .

As HS Freshman: 6", 165 lbs

As HS Senior:6'2", 190 lbs. (see avatar picture)

As College Freshman: 6'2", 195 lbs.

As College Junior"  6'2", 205 lbs

For Pro Ball" 6'2", 195-200 lbs.

Interestingly, his entire time in college baseball, the roster listed him as 6'0" and 170lbs.  I tried to get son to get that changed to something more accurate, but he'd never has been interested in dealing with such details.  So, that's what it shows even today. It was pretty obvious people looked at him that he was way over the listed 170 lbs. and to this day, I have no idea where that number came from.  Even his pro ball roster lists him at only 180 lbs.  Since it really doesn't matter to him, it stands.

When in college, he was determined to get "bigger" and stronger. And by his sophomore year people were commenting on how big he got since his freshman year.  He did get stronger as he planned, but I feel he sacrificed some speed and agility for that size. I think he, for his body type, does better over all at 195 lbs.

As a freshman, 6'3" 160

As a junior, 6'4" 180

As a senior, 6'5" 200

College, TBD, but he's added 3/4 inch or so and about 15 of the pounds in the last 6 months, he's eating even more than ever, and sleeping like he's a 2-yo old again, so who knows...

My 2012 was 5'3", 145 as a hs frosh.  He's 6'3" 195 now.  D1 RHP/ SS.

He and 2 other kids in their ten team high school league played D1 baseball.  All 3 of those kids grew substantially over their high school years, but were relatively small as freshman and sophs.  None of those 3 ever made hs all league (first, second, or honorable mention)...in all 4 years!

Entertaining thread, I'll post to be accountable and we'll see where my late Dec bday 2018 gets to.  Starting SS/RHP Freshman season, starting SS for top summer club team.

Freshman HS Ball 5'7.5 145lb

Now first semester Soph, after fall lifting and some fertilizer he's at 5'9 160lbs (9lbs past 3 months, looks a lot stronger.  He's very committed to his nutrition, some good lean muscle.  Speed in 10yd and 60yd also down in past 3 months.

Interesting thread.  My 2017 was 5'9/135lbs at the start of freshman year, 6'0/160lbs starting sophomore and is currently 6'2/185 as a Jr.  Tracking other information, pop time was about 2.25 as freshman, 2.1 as sophomore and recorded a 2 flat pop by PG this past summer.  60 time has went from 8.5 to 7.3 in the past two years. Ball is coming off the bat a lot different too since freshman year so its been fun to see progression.

I found the biggest difference between freshman and older high school players is upper body strength. Typically the freshman haven't grown into stronger bodies yet. In the spring of 8th grade my son was 5'4", 120. Freshman year he got the height but not the weight and strength.

My 15 year old 2018, with a late March birthday, was about 5'9" and 140 lbs. entering Freshman year. Played Frosh and Varsity baseball in the Spring and all Varsity during summer ball. Currently, he's 5'11" and 160 lbs. Just got done with first Varsity football season and is now transitioning back over to baseball. The height gains of some of the kids posted above give me hope that he'll gain a couple more inches in the next few years. He's already taller than dad and is built more like a couple of his bigger & taller grandpas.

Very nice!  Piggy backing here.  I coach a 5' 5" 2015 grad who just committed to a DII as a MIFer...a second DII was hot on his trail as well.  When coaches called I always asked "doesn't his size bother you".  Most answered "no, I don't recruit size".  Just like the big guy obviously stands out so the little guy who is always 100% effort, 100% of the time.

Big boys! With you in the post, probably won all the family reunion basketball games.

I've known a few guys who grew significantly after high school - 3 to 4 inches. And one who went through such a major spurt from his Freshman to Sr. years that he went from a good, but small, middle school athlete to someone who was so awkward and hurting that he couldn't play sports in high school

A guy I work with takes the cake though. Graduated HS at 5'10" weighed 180. Played in the band and wrestled. By age 21, was 6'2" and continued to grow until age 23, topping out at 6'5". And he now weigts 320. Never played football although he looks as if he is retired from the NFL.

You just never know

Not sure of son's exact height and weight early on:

Freshman: probably 5'10" 145 lbs

Senior: 6'00" 175 lbs

College Freshman: 6'1" 185 lbs

College Junior: 6'1" 195 lbs.

Some one mentioned previously, but there was a noticeable difference in my son's upper body strength.  Due to continously working out in the weight room in the off season, his shoulders became very broad and muscular.   He really did fill out.  Partially the reason he hit 6 HR's his junior year.

One other thing - he has damn big feet - size 13.  Gets it from his mother side - her brother has large feet too.  I'm only size 11.
