I agree with what you have done.

My understanding is that sometimes (notice that I said sometimes) a basis for a home visit is to get a feel for what to offer. If they ask you to attend an unofficial and you can't afford to do so (distance), be honest, if the coach is in town he may make a visit, other than that, not too sure that this is the norm. Keep in mind that there are rules as to when he can and cannot come to your home.

An advisor told a friend not to let the coach come to their house. He said when the coach drives into a gated community of a country club the offer will go down.

I believe a lot depends on "situation" and location. Two of the coaches who were recruiting my son happened to be within two hours of our home on other business. They asked to come visit my son. By the way, these were D3 coaches. Son was extremely surprised and it made him feel like he was a definite top prospect for both of these schools.
